Aston Villa v Chelsea: Links, banter, team news and updates

Morning all and welcome to Saturday and in a couple of hours we will be playing football against Chelsea and it's going to be an important game.

As the preview said, we will do well against Chelsea as they will come at us and allow us to play our counter attacking football. It is fairly predictable writing that but even Marky Mark is writing it these days.

Martin O'Neill has promised we'll go all out today and it is easy to promise that because well, it is the only way we will be able to play and it will be playing to all our strengths and while some will think Chelsea are just too much for us, you know I'm a bit one dimensional so I think we can get something out of it today.

But, at the same time and to keep it level, if we got thumped it wouldn't surprise me either. O'Neill can't for example, play Carew like he did against Manchester City. He has to play Gabby up front by himself and he has to play Reo-Coker. I mean, the confrontation was all forgotten wasn't it?

But, none of that matters now, it's about what happens in the ninety minutes and that is coming up. As soon as we have team news and some links for you to special websites we'll put them here but you know I like this service but there will be more later.

Team News

Friedel, Cuellar, Collins, Dunne, Warnock, Petrov, Milner, Sidwell, Young, Carew and Agbonlahor.

Subs: Shorey, Gardner, Guzan, Reo-Coker, Beye, Delph and Heskey.

Twelfth Man

Let's not forget, for those of you heading off to the game or reading this from the game on your mobile, atmosphere is important today and the support at Villa Park is worth a goal. Roar.

there is the usual

and i am sure others will come very soon

the pensioner - it will be 451 and we will do well ... not convinced 100% we'll get the result but we will as martin o'neill says 'ruffle some feathers' - but like alan green has just pointed out a few things on five live - as in o'neill wouldn't say anything else and he has referred to gabby and young as world class ...

but a lot of people are saying draw today and i'd be happy with a draw today as most would be

As a betting man I would have thought Chelsea 1/1, Villa 5/2. To get 5/1 on betfair was too good an opportunity to miss.
Why?
I haven't seen the team, but would be suprised if we don't play 4-5-1 defending and 4-3-3 attacking.
Our defence is no longer the powder puff it has been since ML retired but if MON doesn't play NRC as a 'spoiler' I (and we) are stuffed. smilies/sad.gif

it is unfortunate ... but i cant see us winning the midfield battle. i can see us counter attacking all day and maybe getting something but chelsea can score from anywhere ...

I agree with Damian. A draw today and that will be a good result, most will be happy with that and rightly so.

This is a new challenge today. Chelsea are the best organised and most efficient team in the league with the number one strike force in my opinion. Dunne and Collins will need to notch it up a level.

man utd would ultimately be happy with a point against chelsea home or away. they might expect three points at home but a point would be just about acceptable

because of that reason, we have to be happy with a point

i've also had three bets today. sunderland to win and then in the htree bets villa win, lose and draw. just because i cant predict ours so much but i fancy sunderland smilies/wink.gif

I often bet on a Villa loss and draw but today the odds aren't favorable for a loss, Chelsea seem handsome favourites in most places.

I've stuck a few quid on a draw, always the best odds and this fixture has a history of ending in a stalemate, especially at VP.

Also just whacked a few on an accy - United, Arsenal, Everton Spurs and Fulham.

Young could be the most overrated player in the league to be honest. Gabby has been great. We still have a great chance of winning this game. I just can't wait for Downing to be fit cos id swap him for Young right now with Young going to the bench which is what he deserves for a while.

Has there ever been a Villa player more deserving of that moment than James Collins? Well done lad, well done.

My plan now... switch to 4-5-1. Let's outnumber them in the middle and stick Gabby out wide right to terrorise Ashley Cole a bit more. Might get him sent off if he keeps managing to get it past him.

I wouldn't say Carew is playing overly deep. He's dropping back from time to time but whenever we bring the ball forward he's quite often in a higher position than Gabby.

I'm just wondering what our tactics are now. Chelsea have had a good couple of chances in the last few minutes and might feel they should be level.

he is dropping deep but like you say on occassion he is staying up and when that happens we start to lose the middle ground .. dont think that can go on for much longer, not against chelsea and the 19 added minutes
we need to do what we shoudl have done against stoke now.

bring on an extra central midfielder and play like we played against liverpool

I'd take Ash off. Move Milner over to the left, stick Gabby on the right, have Carew on his own up front and let Reo-Coker bolster the midfield.

Ivanovic on for Boswinga who seems to have picked up a knock. That takes away a few threats Boswinga offers, but Ivanovic is very good in the air. Must watch out for that.
