Aston Villa v Crystal Palace: FA Cup live and some links

If we win tonight we will have what many will agree, is the best possible draw for the next round. I say if, but we should and while nothing in football is a foregone conclusion, we should.

So, if we do win tonight, we will be another step closer to another Wembley final and it isn't that I don't value the League Cup, I want to win as much as anyone on Sunday and winning on Sunday will be the best day as an Aston Villa fan for a number of years, but if you are going to win silverware, after the League, the FA Cup is the big one, in terms of domestic competitions.

Winning the FA Cup would really elevate us. The League Cup will elevate us for a bit but will be seen as a bigger success by our own fans than others. Winning the FA Cup would be seen as a much bigger success by other fans and really would be quite impressive.

Not that the League Cup isn't a success. If I was offered the League Cup today and going out tonight, I'd take it. Silverware is important and that is me just been greedy; there is no reason we can't win both and I want both, but I am also just trying to take one week at a time and when we win on Sunday, the focus will very much be FA Cup for me.

FA Cup Replay

So, to tonight and you will be able to watch the match on the FA website here or Villa Streams here and we will be adding team news as we get it and doing live updates here and on Twitter.

Early Team News

This is difficult. I really do believe one or two players will get rested and I think that is all that can be done. That isn't to say it isn't needed, but I think that a change or two will be good and I also don't think too many changes can now be made, it is too late to make wholesale changes, to use a phrase used by someone yesterday.

I'm not going to say that I think Milner needs a rest or that it might be a good idea for Petrov, but if it is those two, I think it will be the best choice. I think also that O'Neill could play his eleven for Sunday on Saturday and they'll still give 100% on both days and I think it might still be enough. I am confident in O'Neill getting the players up for it on Sunday.

Big Match

This is new territory for us. One Cup Final, another within touching distance. We can not take our eye off the ball tonight and I'm sure it will be a very good game and after the 16 minutes last Sunday, I think we might see another spell just like that tonight.

So, updates as and when we get today. Please update with any links in the comments below and below, some links to some news that I'm not mentioning above, but worth a read.

Woohoo

Just incase anyone wants to know Carlos Cuellar updated his face book status telling everyone how the team are well up for it and they want 2 cups not just the 1.

We are going to spank this lot like we should have done first time round surely they stand no chance at our ground.

I will be there singing our troops into battle for what will be nothing more than a training exercise, but thats what worries me against poorer opposition we take our eye of the ball hence the replay. I am sure they have learnt from that though and hopefully we will get to see Delph have 90mins.

Brad
Young Cuellar Collins Warnock
Young Delph Milner Downing
Carew Fonz

got 3-0 written all over it Carew, Fonz and Young

Ever since we made it to this final 4th place has seemed less of a holy grail than it did at the start of the season. I have great memories of being at Wembley for the '94 and '96 finals and to me at the moment that's what it's all about: the silverware. Pundits and commentators have been on and on about what Villa fans (even MoN) would rather have out of LCp and 4th. Dunne summed it up for me when he said when you look back at your playing career you want something tangible to reflect on. I'd take a winners' medal every day of the week.

Agree with you though Damien re taking the FAC over the LCp. It's something I've wanted us to win for ages and I always felt it could be in our reach. I cried my eyes out all the way back down Wembley Way in 2000 and the fact we haven't won it for 53 years makes it all the more desireable so I want us to hammer Palace tonight and worry about Sunday tomorrow morning.

Team selection will be interesting...

Being on the big stage is what its about. Many of our current squad have not won anything or even played in europe or for their respective countries.
This will hold them in good stead and give them valuable experience to go on and do better.
It wouldnt suprise me if we went out tonight with players with one eye on sunday, however we have more than enough to put this to bed.
My prediction 2-1 to us tonight with a cheecky 1-0 in the final.

COME ON THE VILLA !!!

It's the Holy Grail - MON said so.

And why do you think it is virtually impossible to break into the top four ? And despite having some of the worst players in their history, Liverpool are still big favourites to retain their top four status ?

It is because top four is the Holy Grail, that's why.

winning the league is the holy grail.

if you believe everything o'neill says and to use a pun, take it as gospel, then you'll be happy if we finish 8th and win nothing, because o'neill will spin that, in the end, as acceptable

I said to that poor city fan it looks like you might die,
Cos You have seen the Glory of Holte Enders in the sky

Yippee eye aye, Yippee eye oooh, Holte Enders in the sky,

We chased him through the terraces, we chased him out the gate,
Little did he know that death was soon to be his fate,
He only had one hour to live and then he’d hear the cry
That every city fan does fear, Holte Enders in the sky,

Yippee eye aye, Yippee eye oooh, Holte Enders in the sky,

Their fists where just like granite and their pockets full of lead,
And when they catch a city fan, you know he’ll end up dead

It'd be mint to see us win some silverwear - much more so than finishing 4th, drawing Valencia in the qualifying rounds and get knocked out with nothing to show for it. But yeah I'd kill to go on Sunday. Ah well, life's a bitch & then you marry one, eh?

Hoping for a slightly rested team [Delf, delph, davies? no milner, perhaps no downing but that's tricky] to massacre CP tonight. hopefully in the 1st half as that's all I can watch!

Winning the Europa does not grant champions league qualification. It guarantees entry into the Europa league regardless of league position for the following season.

If UEFA had any balls whatsoever they would have granted CL qualification to the EL winners and removed the 'parachute payments' of allowing beaten CL teams to enter the EL at the knockout stage. Thus weakening the glass celing of the top 4 by allowing teams like Villa to take the EL seriously. If all you get out of it is EL qualification you might as well sack it off and use the 17 games to focus on the league as winning 17 extra games will at the very least secure a Europa place for the following year and there is not the added travel time of going to Romania to use a Liverpool based example. Which could effect league form, resulting in missing out on Europe the following season as winning the EL is not easy. To go back to a liverpool based example; they will most likley face Fenerbache away in the first leg of the RO16. Not a
easy tie at all.

As far as I can see the only advantage is qualification as it attracts players. There is little point in actually playing in the thing. As Man City have shown; other than CL football the real carrot for a top class player is money. The EL is a sideshow, the only purpose it serves is to soften the blow for any of the chosen brands unfortunate enough to have a bad year.

I am actually glad we never got into the Europa league properly this season. I would rather concentrate purely on domestic cups and the league.

I'll say that I agree with us doing so well this season in the domestic competitions due to not having a european distraction, but I disagree that the competition is worthless.

There are several teams that have win the UEFA and gone on to have success in the CL the following season, Porto being the obvious example.

Rather than being a prestigious tournament to win, I feel it is a valuable opportunity to give younger players or players without a huge amount of european experience the chance to play against european teams away from home.

Not only is this an advantage when learning how the european game differs from the EPL, but also everything that goes with travelling away from home in europe and the way this will help players development and belief in themselves.

The europa is good prearation for the CL and should we miss the top four this season I would like to think MoN will go and try to win that tournament next season, especially if we bag a trophy this time around.

All of the tournaments available to us have their own pro's and cons.

The league cup is the lesser but would be valuable to us right now considering we've haven't won anything for so long. It will instill confidence and belief in what is a young impressionable side which may kick on well if we can win it.

The FA Cup is the most prestigious domestic cup competition in the world and to win it would not only bring the same benefits of winning the league cup, but also may help us win over more support, the interest of better players and raise our profile nationally and internationally, especially if the victory were against a large club in the final.

The CL offers all these thing, recognition, kudos, confidence, but the reall attraction is the financial windfall generated that may help us klick on more dramatically than winning anything else. If we made it out of the group stage the benefits would be extraordinary.

All these competitions have benefits due to the fact that we are where we are right now. I am not willing to right off any tournament because it is 'worthless' it is unfortuante we went out of europe so early this season, but we are doing well despite it.

Lets just hope we can win something, anything and i'll be quite happy.

We aren't a big club yet and imo can't afford to pick and choose.

some interesting comments about champions league versus trophy winning.

I for one think that as a club we need champions league qualification as its money thats needs to progress as a club these days.

David villa wont sign if we win a league clun or van dar vaart wont piss his pants if we win the fa cup!!

Id love us to win the cup and make the fa cup final if we can dodge chelsea till the final at least.

Damien you are right 1st is the holy grail, but for the top 4 clubs who can realistically mount a serious challenge, the holy grail for us at where we are as a club in our current state of development we too must see 4th as the holy grail.

The holy grail gave youth and eversalting life, well as a club champions league money could do the same for us.

Remember as kids when you used to collect premier league stickers for your merlin album, it used to give the honurs of every club, well we need to start improving our honours as our recent history is piss poor for a club our size, i guess silverwar and champs league status are nealy on par these days with the money involved.

its a bit sad for football but we have to keep up and progress into that mould.

If the two European competitions were run as a league with two divisions there would need to be promotion long with demotion. Currently a club can be relegated to the EL from the CL, there is currently no reciprocity with promotion. We would need to be vigilant however, if this were introduced it could be the thin end of the wedge that leads us to a European super league of some sort. Already the EPL has had a detrimental effect on the finances of domestic football. Not just in the lower divisions, look at Pompey and others with massive debt. It would be hopeless to expect the European competitions to rein back and reduce the number of clubs and games in their competitions, Pandora's box is open and all Hope has escaped. The game today would be unrecognisable to a visitor from half a century ago, imagine how it will look fifty years from now.

That Holte enders song is embarassing. Lets stick to singing songs about how great our team is, not about killing people who support other teams. Thugs and cretins shouldnt be associated with football in any form, but sadly theres too many idiots around.

He hasnt actually rested anyone that matters, milner, young, gabby and downing are the players that need the rest. Its a poor decision from o-neill, and for me it shows he lacks the bottle to make bold decisions, and prioritise games. Maybe its because we berated him for the uefa cup, but we dont need to be that strong to get through this match, and we are going to see a tired side on sunday.

I know, all we will here after this game is how it wasnt a courner, forgeting we had a blatent penalty turned down, and their thug forward should have been sent off in the last match for a clear elbow.
As we all know though, its not penalties and ppl being sent off that changes games, its courners beign awarded to the wrong team.

Milner has been fabulous, he is dominating the game, Delph offers nothing, he doesnt challenge for the ball, he wants to long on the ball when he has it, he is to lightweight, he is terribly one footed, and his passes are poorly weighted and genrally behind the player he aims at.
he does look a bit like ashley young though, which may be confusing the palace defence

Dont know if you guys saw Guzan, Sidwell and The Fonz warming up against Burnley, but he (Guzan) has close control that many outfield players could learn from. The look of surprise on Sidwell's face was priceless as Guzan was killing passes smacked at him from about ten yards with a single touch.

Not really an opinion on his ability with crosses, more a random observation.

Once again no changes from o-neill, he is trying his best to run our players into the ground, its as if he hasn't learnt from last season.

dont get me wrong, he's really likable. but if we want to move forward we need a consistant striker
no he plays fan, like you, for fools. im not trying to be insulting, its just how i see it. even all his comments in the media are so sickeningly pro fans. keep the hype going

Looking at the replays I don't see how anyone can have a go at Warnock for the penalty. He gets pushed in the face and in the throws of going down catches the legs of their man, 9/10 in the Prem the striker gets booked for that.

The cross to Carew, however!!!!!!

Someone consistent? He has a 1 in 3 goal ratio. Hes way more prolific than Gabby will ever be and brings way more to the team than Heskey does. Im certain all his comments and kissing of the crest etc is completely sincere. He loves Villa and many of the fans have forgot that as Heskey somehow manages to get in the team ahead of him. You may think hes lazy sometimes, but thats just fitness. Hes not gonna get any better sitting on the bench. given a proper run of games, he would be the complete striker!

Steveo, too true mate. I understand disappointment and being critical of poor performances but some of the spite about players and a manager who have taken us a long way this season is not great.

Gabby, for instance, has been great this season - has some technical deficiencies but brings such a lot to the party and is so dangerous but he still gets slagged

Ash has been playing great recently, senational player and tries difficult stuff. Every wide player in the world misses more crosses and shots than they try but people still have digs at him

These players are our prize possessions annd we should treat them as such, not above criticism of course but keep it real

Badger, where were you sitting? I was in the North Stand on Sunday and must admit was pleasantly suprised, not like old times but better than I expected by far, even in first half

By contrast in the Holte earlier in the season I had some guy telling me to sit down after standing up for about 15 seconds at kick off. He got both barrels, which was a bit too strong to be honest, but it's not the fcking ballet

Sid, I'm utterly depressed atm.

Getting kicked out has a bit to do with it, tbf.

Where's the heart gone?

Plastic, springs to mind.

limerick, trust an Irish man to get it right. I'm just going to enjoy it on Sunday. If we lose we'll have given it all against a great team and somehow I'm feeling far more confident than usual in a run up to a game with Man Utd

but whatever happens, I'm going to enjoy it - unless I see people on here spouting shite and then gloves come off - not that anyone will take any notice but you've got to do what you think is right

Tell you what Badger, if we start winning things it will get a whole lot more plastic - but you ain't gonna go wishing to be unsuccessful so what do you do? Don't forget, on good days it is still sensational at Villa Park. Also, many things have improved, facilities, access, no violence any more and secretly I quite like being able to sit down and take my 6 year old daughter without worrying about getting in to a ruck.

We will only sound like old gets going on about the old days - it's gone now but you can stiil enjoy it even if you had a bad experience today

Don't go to bed angry - you might wake up as Simeon. I'm off to bed, take care y'all

John R, people said at the start of this week what a big week it was and so far passed with flying colours. Biggest challenge yet to come, but who knows, maybe we will be smiling on the verge of becoming a successful club again

aero,

listen, im not a huge heskey fan at all, but the majority of the time he gives his all, and has actually been quite good in 2010. notice an awful lot of the moaning about him has stopped? carew does nothing, or very little this season if he doesnt score - 1 in 3 for accounting for his performances is not good enough. 3 of them are penalties as well.

gabby runs his arse off and works really hard. ok he doesnt look like a natural finisher and maybe he never will score a lot - but he's another that loves aston villa. as for carew, thats very naive of you, he's quite obviously using the fans to keep him at a club where he is an overpaid relative to his efforts

also, im not saying he's a worse goalscorer - hes the best we have. but we need better. he doesnt work hard enough to warrent starting when he scores 1 in 4 from open play
