Carew to Spurs and Jenas to Aston Villa: It's rumour time

Take this which ever way you want to take it but a rumour doing the rounds is that Harry Redknapp is interested in John Carew and that Martin O'Neill is interested in Jermaine Jenas.

We have to accept that this is probably pure speculation but we know big John likes the bright lights and they don't get any brighter than London and at the same time there is talk that Jenas isn't what Redknapp wants in the middle of the park.

There was also something on the Telegraph website this morning, but they did get it from The Mirror but you know I don't like linking to them.

The part that sort of makes it unbelievable is from the Metro and is below. How could Martin O'Neill even be considering letting Carew go because he has Heskey coming back?

Metro.co.uk, April 5th 2009
Spurs have been linked with the Norway striker, who may find himself surplus to requirements at Villa Park once Emile Heskey returns to full fitness

The talk is that David Moyes is also interested in Jenas but that Martin O'Neill has pencilled his name in next to the big white space on his whiteboard, that would be free if Gareth Barry does leave this summer.

Either way, this is pure 100% speculation but if I had to give it a score, I'd give it a two. There is every chance John Carew would like a move to London and there is every chance Jenas will be leaving in the summer; I just can't see it going like this, not this easily anyway.

We'll know Harry Redknapp wants Carew when he comes out and says he 'has admired him for a long time but that doesnt mean he would sign him because he doesnt talk about other teams players'

We’d be getting the raw end of the deal there, much prefer to keep Big John then have Jenas here. Would rather have Carew then Heskey as well come to think of it.

If we replace Barry with Jenas it'll show the world that Villa were 2008/09 one-season wonders with no ambition or chance of cracking the Top 4. Quite simply, if he isn't good enough for Spurs, he isn't good enough for us.

Now Jenas is reasonable, but we're trying to fill a gap left by an England midfielder who, on his day, is like a Rolls-Royce of a footballer. Jenas, on his day, is like a new Vauxhall Astra.

Keeping with the transport-theme. Carew is our Porsche, and Heskey is our pushbike...

Elliot,

Ashley would cost you an arm and a leg. On his day he's devastating, but those days seem a bit of a distant memory at the moment.

Absolutely do not want to lose him, but if Spurs did bid crazy money and Ash wanted the London lights, I'd settle for lots of money plus Gareth Bale- what a waste having him on the bench! I know he's got a ridiculous 'zero wins' stat, but the only left foot sweeter than his in the league belongs to our own Gareth.

It would be ridiculous to get rid of Carew. Hes top class and there arnt many around like him. In reality we shouldnt want to be selling any of our starting 11 or 3 r 4 on the bench. We need to get rid of the dead wood. The players who fill us with dread when we see them starting. Its all well and good to say players love the club and show heart but that just wont cut it at the top.

We need to replace, fridel, harewood, knight, salifou, shorey, L.young (is he really a champions league player?) as well as signing a quality striker, a quality playmaker, a quality cental defender, and a quality goal keeper (pity we didnt go for shay given)

To push on we need to keep what we have in terms of quality players, add to it and push on

My mates at spurs think Jenas is total rubish and cannot wait to see the back of him.Hope to god we do not sign him, just not good enough. Also rumours that Bentley also wants to come to Villa in the summer. I hope MON goes abroad and buys some decent world class players like Petrov and Carew who have been immense.

yeah i agree he has been consistent for us, but if we want champions league football, players like him should be considered a squad player. We're so far behind in terms of quality we need to spend 100 million.

Hed defo be good enough to play for utd, arse, chel, liverpool, real madrid, barcelone, munich, porto, lyon, etc, i dont think so,

carew is 10 times the player heskey is why the fuck cant mon see that?

if heskey was playing instead of carew yesterday we'd have lost easily.

redknapp can keep jenas, far too inconsistent.

Carew for Jenas? No chance.
Also, where did this article get the idea that Heskey is preferable to Carew when fully fit? Heskey's performances do not come anywhere near Carew's.
Carew was fantastic yesterday and we definitely need to hold onto him.

I wouldn't be totally adverse to Jenas. I don't think he's the solution to our problems, but he would be a good addition.

O'Neill needs to spend big this season and none of this last minute buys either.

We definitely need another forward, two midfielders (one central and a right sided one) and a left back. And if Barry leaves, then we'll obviously need another one on top of them.

What I would hate this summer transfer season to turn into is one where we are fighting to keep our younger promising players like ashley and gabby, ultimately retaining them, saying how brilliant we got to keep them, and not making any other additions. Basically like the Barry saga, but on a bigger scale. that would be a disaster.

What we learned about O'Neill from the Barry saga last summer is that, if the buying club meet O'Neill's estimation of the player, he will sell, but he will not concede because of a player's wishes.

Barry's wishes were given consideration because he had served the club for so long, but the price wan't met, so he wasn't sold.

With regards to younger players, they will certainly not be sold just because they want to leave. O'Neill's estimation will have to be met first.

I live and work in Nottingham and a colleague of mine is Jermaine Jenas best friend. They grew up together in Nottingham and are still in regular contact. He told me about five weeks ago that Jermaine had told him he thought he might be playing at VIlla next season...

Nowt wrong with Jenas, if you think of him as a replacement for Salifou. Likewise Bent as replacement for The Hare. JC would do a better job at ManU than Tevez, he's proper class is JC, we should not sell him for any less than £25m.

HAY!!!!!!!!!!! VERY INTERESTING!!!!!

i was on Newsnow the other day and saw a link to a story saying we had signed Ruben De La Red (VillaTalk.com). i didnt get a chance to have a look at it.

I went back today but couldnt find it on Newsnow.

So, I typed it into Google - "villa sign de la red villa talk".

I got the story i was looking for...

But! when i try to read it, it says "Sorry! You do not have authorization to view this story". So i signed up to the crappy website but still received the same message.

So...... are Villa Talk writers holding out on us or something.
Have we signed a pre-contract with him???

UTV!!!

There are very few strikers in this league that I would take over John Carew. When he is fit he scores goals, he holds the ball up, he is a nightmare to play against. And he is very quick for such a big guy, which is often overshadowed when Agbonlahor is flying around. Plus Carew has stated that he loves it here, and he feels it is a real home and wants to retire here.

I dont take any Carew rumor seriously, because barring another nightclub incident I really cannot see him leaving.

As for Jenas he is a talented player. But he like most spurs players has no head on his shoulders. He seems to be the epitome of lazy player who is content being in the PL making zillions.

The thing with MON and rumors is, we know he takes his time and research. I cant see him bringing in a personality that will not gel with the team, because he hasnt so far. Character is a big thing in winning teams, and I think we are seeing how serious MON takes it through his signings.

Think Carew is very underated except by players who have had to defend against him, often quoted as being "unplayable".He seems deceptivly quick and great in the air, would hate to see him leave. would like to see Heskey come good, dont think he has been given a chance to settle yet into a formation that works. Changing from a winning 451 formula has not helped him, but where we are in the season doesn`t give anyone time to settle as we need imediate results.
Agree with Villa_Chris. I think Luke has had good season even playing on left when he`s a right back. Don't think you can judge him fairly until he gets a good run at right back. Played well against Manure apart from one mistake.

I would literally lose all hope if we sold Carew. The man is playing some fantastic football at the moment for a team that is going through a bad patch. Says a lot IMO.

Jenas is a talented footballer but he is not the answer if Barry does decide to leave. I hope Barry stays but if he does decide to move on then I hope we turn it into a positive by buying a good attacking midfielder. The money we'll get for Barry will easily be enough and who knows, we may come through stronger.
