Rumours are rife that Marlon Harewood is set to join Newcastle next week on loan for three months.
The rest of the season rumour that is touted also is a little misleading as we can recall him but I for one think it will be good for him to get some regular football.
Harewood, if you believe the speculation, was set to join Hull yesterday but it fell through. This deal, seeing him move to Newcastle should see him get regular football and give him the opportunity to restart his career.
Harewood might not get many chances to play but when he does, he gives it his all and I mean no disrespect when I say this, but he will score for fun if he does go to Newcastle.

... Marlon Harewood is a bit of an enigma. I initially thought he'd be a good signing for Villa but somewhere along the way, whilst MON must have thought the same, he fell out of favour immediately. He's genuinely never been given a proper run in the team and I would think most of his starts have been from the bench. Not so sure he wouldn't have been just as prolific as Gabby given a decent run in the team. I think his performance against Spurs was the performance when he fell out of favour and I really dont think he's ever recovered from that in MON's eyes. Good lick to him and I hope he regains some form. I think if he can score a goal or two, his confidence will come back and he'll be flying again. If he does well enough, whats to say he wouldn't get another chance with us but I doubt it. |

It's time for him to move on and good luck to him. Glad he didn't go to Hull tho, probably would have got another Hat-trick against us. Good luck Marlon and thank you. ... Cyprus toon. I believe we were saying that Harewood would do well for you. He isn't getting a game for us so wouldn't it be good if he came and scored some goals for you? He's strong, Quick and puts in 110% every time. After watching Newcastle scrape a win against Leicester the other night with Guthrie having to step up because you don't have any quality up front I think he could get 15 goals for you if you take him all year. Newcastle need to be in the PL I feel as they are a proper football club. Don't come on here banging the European drum though. Sure we're out of europe and we're a top 6-8 side. No one said we weren't. It was simply stated that Harewood could do well in the championship because that's the standard of football Newcastle play now. |

I took my info from Wiki and totally accept it's probably wrong Badger You don't need to tell me mate It's a weird one. I'd love him to come good for us, but for a bloke his size, he goes down as easy as Ash, imo. He's supposed to be a striker and his job is to score goals. He simply doesn't and that, to me makes him a liability. I know all about the argument about the rest of his game and his contribution, but I just don't see it for Villa. Put it this way, I reckon Hesselink (just gone to Hull) will average a better strike rate this season and for me that's not good enough. |

He can hold his own in the air and is certainly an out and out striker, in that he doesn't hold the ball in the same way Heskey does. He can finish, as was proved when he got a hat-trick against us. ... Since you're on here, do you blame Ashley? Or would you say some of the more unreasonable supporters who dream of instant succes are to blame for the mess a St. James? Not a pop, my housemate is a toon fan and he seems to blame some sections of the support as much as the chairman etc. I have to admit that we get fans booing sometimes because all of a sudden people think we have a right to be in the top four. I myself am a little more realistic. |

With the advent of forums and blogs you get a better insight and I'm no longer sure I do know what we want as a collective. After everything that's happened, most NUFC fans of my generation would just like some normality. Get back to being a proper football club again without Coronation Streetesque tendencies. |

... ak, I am an optimist you are correct. I am also a realist. I accept that with the squad we have it'll be difficult to break the top four, in fact it'll be difficult to do what we did last season. I would also say that with this squad it's not impossible and will be overjoyed if we were to break the top four monopoly. I also believe that we are more than capable of going on another run like the beginning of last season or like that of the back end of last season. The truth is I just don't know and neither does anyone else. I do however think that MoN has done a good job in the window and signed some decent players. Just because someone doesn't know who they are (actually if someone hears the name of some foriegner thay've never heard of they think he's the next pele) or we don't pay £25m for them then they're crap. I'm more realistic about football as it is an unpredictable game and so much comes down to the individuals involved that no one ever really knows. I remember Boro getting relegated with Ravinelli, Juninho and Emerson in their side????? I like your comments because they are objective and intelligent, what riles me is comments from others like: 'we're s**t this year top ten is the best we can hope for' We are not s**t, we may finish tenth, but we are more likely to finish top eight. If we finish any higher then our squad has to perform and we'll need big performances like Carlos at Anfield the other week and Ashleys game against Everton and Harewoods goal against Liverpool. Individual moments that get us that hard fought extra point. There are many teams of a similar quality like ourselves, Tottenham, Everton, Fulham, Sunderland could be there, Man City. It's on a knif edege, but we are not that bad. I am realistic, i'm not going to boo the team at half time on the first day of the season, in fact i'm not going to boo at all because for every moment the club has given me to make me embarassed to be a Villa fan they've given a moment to be proud of too. |

I just hope the behind the scenes stuff gets sorted because that's the most important thing. A stable club is a happy club, and if the players are happy then even if they're not the greatest players they are sure to play well and put the club back where it belongs. Whatever you do don't let O'Leary take over. |

But i sill have my doubts on whether MON can actually get the best of this squad due to what i would call out dated tactics and footballing style. I still have major doubts of MON that go beyond just his transfer dealings. Only time will tell and our fixture list looks nice and handy but that is when we cannot afford to drop stupid points which is what we have done in the past. I just really want to see our football progress this season and to see us geting our passing going. That has deterioated since MON has taken over im afraid. That has got to improve majorly in my opinion but is that down to better players or the coaching methods? I have no doubt if that did improve VP would become to fortress which is what is really hurting us at the moment. The sooner Delph takes Sidwells spot in the centre the better. |

... ak I hope you're not accusing me of giving you false hope!! I knew there was an optimist in there trying to get out. I think we play the ball around better than we get credit for some of the time, but you are right. However much passing we did under O'Leary (we only ever played long ball under GT) we never really had the personnel to be a threat. We play to our strengths and that is pace and dead ball kicking. We are slowly building the squad and i'm sure the quality of football will improve as we sign more technical players. Downing and Delph both seem to have an excellent touch and will be big players for us, but even with Gareth in the side we were never that technical. Man U started the SAF regime with pacey attacking football with the likes of Giggs and then Kanchelskis etc and i think thats what we're building here. Play to your strengths and you'll do ok. There is no way we're going to play Arsenal and Man U and Chelsea off the park so play 4-5-1 defend well try to keep the ball and hit them on the break. The lesser teams at home however are a different prospect and we should be able to beat Stoke etc with a passing game. I can't help but think this is the best defence we've had in a while, certainly better than Ridgewell, Mellberg, Delaney and Bouma. Mellberg had a good rep but I think MoN stuck him on the flank for a reason, was never the no nonsense CB we had in Laursen. Warnock, Young, Dunne and Cuellar looks good and a Midfield of Petrov, Reo-Coker, Milner, Downing and Young is as good as anyone outside the top four. If Martin were to get to next summer and add (hypothetical) Scnijder £15m and Huntelaar £18m then all of a sudden we look top four. we have solid, young, pacey, hungry squad that's only going to improve now. My problem with the Gregory years was too many old players, good, but old. GT played ugly football and DOL never really had the funds and wasted money on Djemba Djemba etc. Admittedly he signed Laursen and Bouma but I think in MoN we have a guy who appears to know exactly what he's doing. Just because he's taken a while to bring a few in doesn't mean he's panicking. Either way ak it's gonna be a cracking season full of highs and lows and i'll be screaming at my telly win lose or draw. |

Our midfield, on the other hand, is fine: they don't need to raise their game to level up with Heskey because this guy is not Marco Van Basten. They just need to hope MON continues to see the light, keeping Heskey on the bench because without him - oddly enough - we always seem to do better. UTV |

... I also disagree Mostyn. You're not alone in rating him, Churchill does too. As do I when he plays for England. But for some reason it just doesn't work down the Villa. I think asking the midfield to raise their game for one man is unreasonable to say the least. Surely he should change his game to suit the midfield if he's so good? He makes the odd knock on, but adds very little else for us, imo. He doesn't have the flair to do anything in the hole, doesn't link the midfield and attack up that much and simply doesn't score goals. If we're going to use two strikers, I want both of them to score goals and without wanting to sound like a broken record, he simply doesn't do that. Perhaps it's because of the instructions he receives from MON or the coaches, I don't know. But seeing as a massive majority (I'd say, from what I read/hear) all say the same thing, surely they can't all be wrong? |

... Villan63 - I often hesitate when I try to rate Heskey in my head, something I've done over and over for the past few years: is it possible so many decent managers played and still play him and I just can't see what's so special about this guy? Ok, we agree he offers workhorse quality, physical power and the odd - odder these days - moment of quality but he's not a striker because he's never scored that many goals over the years, he's not a midfielder despite Eriksson's attempt to play him on the left for England and he's certainly not a defender although, no doubt, he comes good when there's the need to defend a corner. I tend to bracket him in the Alan Smith category, a damned breed of players that never seems to find a specific position in a team: you know they have enough quality to be in the Premiership but you just don’t know what to do with them. A bit like an unwanted but pricey Christmas present you end up shifting on Ebay. I think Heskey had a decent career with England because in the category of big lumps up front with some skills and a decent ‘nod on’ ability he was probably the best of his generation: but is that enough to still have him knocking about at the top level? Given the alternatives in England, probably yes. And that is where my beef with MON still lies: if this otherwise clever, engaging manager had the courage to gamble on some quality from abroad, Aston Villa options would instantly increase when it comes to finding a good player. But to suggest the rest of the Villa squad should raise their game to accommodate in the best possible way Emile Heskey’s superior skills well…I guess we all have different opinions on football. Even blind people UTV! |

... One other thought. I haven't gone back and looked at the stats, but my memory is that we had a lot of draws when MoN came in. The next season we turned a number of them into wins. Is it possible that a 451 formation will lead to more draws, particularly at home where the opposition may sit back? It's worth remembering that if you have two draws you get 2 points, but if you throw caution to the wind and win one but lose the other you have 3 points. Might we need to play 442 in some games, or at least revert to it if we're failing to break teams down and want to go for the win? |

... Mostyn, MON and Capello clearly know something the majority don't. I've heard Petrov, Milner and Reo all be slagged off venomously on this site. Maybe that's why they do the job they do and we do ours? All have had a good game at least a few times, according to the fans. Can you honestly say the same about Emule? I can't. Even when he scored against Portsmouth away, (his high point for us, imo) he was anonymous and gifted a chance that I could have scored. I can't remember his other goal. Has he ever been MOTM? Gabby got it a few times, for scoring a goal, didn't he? The bloke is pony for the Villa, simple as, imo. |

... Beware the Mule. Feed the Hare. Roll with the Dung Beetle. Heskey to come good this season based on the law of averages or more likely einstein's relativity. It starts agin the scum. We'll use him like a bowling ball on their defence. Sidders should learn to watch the Mule. He's just the player that could benefit if he had the nous |

... Badger, might you have said the same about Petrov in his first season though? How long did we wait for him to have his first MOTM? No mate. Petrov showed signs for me and was not consistently crap. He was up and admittedly very down. But Heskey just doesn't work, imo. He's never been an out and out goalscorer and imo, doesn't suit our system. If we didn't have Carew, he'd probably be our best alternative/option. But we do and Carew shows him up for what he is. Which is decidely average, at best. Carew scores goals, Heskey doesn't. At the end of the day, what is a striker's only job/requirement??? I think that's undisputable. He, to me is just not an instinctive striker. I can't remember, was it the Pool game? (it was, ball from Milner) he had a chance that any decent striker would have buried, but messed it up As I keep saying, I hope I'm wrong, but don't think so on this one |

... Balance is the Mule's problem. He doesn't have the balance necessary to be a top class athelete - the man is certainly no ballet dancer is he. I can't see him lasting long on strictly come dancing when his career is over. Maybe he should take lessons from some oriental master in finding his inner focus. Still think we could use him as a demolition wrecking ball of a forward, but the likes of Sidders need to learn to make hay with the resulting chaos |

...how about lessons from a farmer how to hit a barn door Indeed, good one. Actually I think the Mule would make a fairly passable farmer himself. You could see him at the farmers markets on a Saturday selling those very expensive sausages couldn't you. Or in a pair of green farmer's boots, straw in the mouth, herding the cows into milking. I swear MON will pick him for Saturday week. |

... I think Reo-Coker will become our Ray Houghton player..his presence will give everyone else on the pitch the confidence to do what they do well....and when he plays well the team will play exceptionally well... With Milner,Agbonlahor,Young and eventually Downing all on the pitch at the same time, we will need him to be in there, breaking up play and marshalling the forwards into becoming the first line of defence...as we will be a little bit top light... Looking forward to the season....a marquee signing would have really excited, but I would think the feeling of confidence I have now will last a lot longer.... |

Why he left him out agains Wigan I'll never know. People say the dung beetle is a man for the 4-5-1 only, but I disagree. He's even more important in a 4-4-2. |

... Badger - not harsh, just reality Heskey OUT - he is a pernicious influence on the team and loses us points Plus to all those who said Neill wold be ineffective for us when I suggested him - he's now gone to Athletico Madrid who, with respect, are a stronger team than us and are regularly competing in Champions League Mistake...I think so, I just hope we don't see the own goals for fun and penalties like so much confetti at a wedding that certain other signings were liabe to concede last season |

... Heskey works well in the right system. But we do not play that system or have the players to really do it. What he does for England is he is the platform/ work horse that enables all the other talented players like Rooney and Owen in his day to get the ball in dangerous positions by opening up space for them by using his physique to hold off the CB's. We don't have Gerards, Lampards or Rooneys in our team so i can't see it really working out for him at VP. I have nothing againest him as he always gives 110%. His only chance i can see is if we partner him with a skillful attacker with a better CM behind him but that can't happen until next summer now. |

You're club is no better than most of the Prem teams, you only get into the top half because you the best of the worst teams, not because you're any good!!! I mean, you even failed to stay in Europe before it started
