Newcastle duo to grace Premier League again with the mighty Aston Villa?

You all know I love a rumour or two and we have one today that involves two players from Newcastle United. The worrying thing for some might be that it's too Newcastle defenders we are apparently interested in.

I say worrying because Newcastle looked poor last season and conceded goals for fun, but we have to look past that for a moment when looking at these two players. Newcastle had 18 managers last season and the players ran around not knowing what they were supposed to do.

These two players, Habib Beye and Sebastién Bassong are not bad players, but I fancy O'Neill Might feel happy with his right back cover now and I still fancy he'd prefer Distin for the middle.

The players are also linked with a host of other clubs and when this tends to happen, it usually turns out that it is agent speak for 'my man wants to leave' so I wouldn't be reading too much into it.

But, our manager does have a habit of surprising and he does need another central defender and he also might not think Eric Lichaj is ready to deputise for Luke Young, despite some pretty good performances in the Peace Cup, so don't be surprised if they are both getting the tour at Villa Park some day soon.

So, unless we get a signing or two or some news from the club, this might be it for today. I'm off to start my prediction piece for next season and as such, I've started a poll, so we can see where you guys think we will finish.

Surely buying defenders from Newcastle is not very wise.
They are noted for having a crap defence and the in the last 2 seasons teams that Bassong has played for have been relegated.

No thanks.smilies/grin.gif

fair point, didn't look at it like that. But are they even good enough for the villa, anyway? Like Harvey has pointed out Newcastle are renowned for a leaky back four and these defenders got them relegated. (not on their own I know).

Bassong was voted player of the season last season and Beye, player of the season the year before. Beye is pure class, one of the best right backs in the EPL and bassong looks like he could become a great player.

Not to sure about signing defenders off Newcastle, seeing as there defence has been horrendous for years. However, with bad players around you it's easy to look bad and to be dragged down with them so i'll reserve my judgement for now!

On another note, after hearing how good the youth players did in the Peace cup i was wondering if anyone could answer a couple of questions for me please!

First up, whatever happened to o'halloran? i remember hearing good things last year and now nothing. Has he moved on? Also how many youngsters have we signed this summer? One from northampton and one from the Arse. Is that it?

Cheers. UTVsmilies/smiley.gif

Although this almost certainly rules out his move to Arsenal which could allow us to offer him a considerable improvement on his wage at Fulham. Wouldn't be too big a loss to us if he misses Europe. . .

If you think about the players MON tends to sign they are:-
1) British ( well English as very few good players from rest of GB)
2) Young
(Honourable exceptions Luke Young and Brad Friedel)
With that in mind, I suspect that unless we can get a really top-quality centre-back (and there seem to be precious few of those - Senderos!!!!! - what a joke), we will buy young with the potential to get better. There may still be life in the Wheater rumour and I think Turner at Hull is a good snotter in the Laursen mould.
We shall see............

Distin looks like he Martin's first choice and Clark being the 4th choice.

Bassong and Hangleand are too expensive for Mon's eyes - but Beye would be a good backup for Young and has european experience.

I'm sorry but I don't buy into all this doom and gloom about the size of our squad and losing our 'best' players. All we need to do is take a look at the other teams above us to see that none of them are as strong as last season:

Man Utd have lost Tevez and Ronaldo and replaced them with Valencia and Owen. Whoopdy doo Basil!

Liverpool have finally lost Alonso (Mascherano could soon follow) and only bought a very overpriced full back!!

Arsenal have lost Adebayour and Toure and are close to losing Scenderos and Fabregas and replaced them with Vermaelen!

Chelsea remain strong and have added some quality but keeping Terry was the best bit of business they will ever do!

Everton look set to loose their best defender and don't have the money to add any real quality although Moyes does seem to get the best out of his players.

Spurs are shit and will always be shit

Man City although they are throwing money around left right and centre they are going to be left with a team hevily biased towards attack with a lot of big ego's demanding regular starting places!! Mark Hughes has got a real job on his hands keeping that team together and getting them to gel. I for one am hoping for a bit of self capitulation!!!

Villa although weakened by the losses of Barry and Laursen, Barry's best years are behind him and we relied too much on him last year. Laursen is going to be impossible to replace. There are only 2 maybe 3 players in the world that I would class as better than our Martin but he has gone. We are building steadily from last year, have added two exiting midfielders to our ranks and have a crop of good young talent that reminds me of the time when Giggs, Beckham, Scholes and the Nevilles burst onto the scene for United. If we can add a decent central defender and an attacking midfielder/forward to the ranks, I personally feel that we have an outstanding chance of getting into the top 4 this year. Bring on the season!!

really dont reckon we will be in for a striker maybe only tuncay but he can play all over the pitch which suits MON and i think with gabby fonz heskey and carew there is enough firepower when you consider how many potential goals we have coming from midfield now, fonz looks like the real deal great feat, great eye for goal and now looks to be beefing up a little bit saw him in the under 19 championships an he out muscled some really big centre halves so i would imagine he will have a role to play this year pushing gabby all the way and if we were to buy tuncay if would give us loads of options.

i know chrisdon doesnt agree that tuncay is worth a shout but i disagree and as he played so well against us both times last year i can see him being in MON mind as a possible target

Finally somebody that talks sense. Dont agree with the Bent thing though id rather see Keane but doubt w****r harry would let him go yet. Distin for me is ideal to play with Curto, a good solid left sided center back, i think bringing Campbell in on a free as a cover could be good for a year aswell.

For me with the the right partner Curtis Davies could go on to be an England regular people seem to forget he was very close to a move to arsenal before we signed him.

We are not going to spend £10m on a Newcastle defender who may come good, and certainly who went down with Newcastle.

Obviously to which everyone will say "We did that with Davies" but the difference here is that Davies is English and that's the reason why he cost so much.

Are people seriously believing that MON would spend almost as much money on Bassong or Beye as Arsenal have on Vermaelen? Or as much as was originally touted for Hangeland?

As for Lichaj - I don't think he's ready for the Premier League at all... He was turned inside out multiple times during the Peace Cup and the Premier League is only the same but faster so I think he needs to stay in the reserves for a while to develop. Yes we did well to win the Peace Cup but to be fair of all the players I imagine who will progress to the first team in the near future, only Guzan and Albrighton will invariably be coming off the bench.

I'd buy Distin but for no more than about £4.5m. Campbell might be worth it if he drops his ridiculous £85k a week wage demands.

As for Veloso, he's been consistently good with Sporting Lisbon along side Joao Moutinho - part of the reason why Everton have been after both for several years. All that said though he is far from prolific, and is not an attacking midfielder but he would shore up the defensive part of midfield with Stiliyan allowing Young, Downing and Milner to roam behind a solid forward (Assuming we play the 4-2-3-1 variant of 4-5-1).

Delph will be introduced progressively - I doubt he is going to displace anyone especially if we buy a quality central attacking midfielder, although money would go that Ashley is going to play in the middle/in the hole this season (or Milner) if Downing is going to get first team football (which you have to bet he will).

All in all good times though, so we'll see who the next 4 signings will be...

A quality European attacking flair player please Martin...

I feel MON's next signing will be a centre back thats our weakest position at the moment. I think Distin and Campbell will both be wearing claret and blue this coming season.

Both players have heaps of experience and when playing in EPL thats a must. We have two very young centre backs in davies and celluar so there is a really need for some experience. If it's not distin and campbell i will be very surprised. The price of bringing both these player in would cost no more than 5 or 6 million which i feel will appeal to MON.

Cover for Young and the left back position need strengthing Warknock would be my choice. The fact that he is English and versitile makes me think MON would be interested, plus he was Blackburns player of the season.

Midfield well if we do sign anyone i think someone will have to go, hopefully sidwell i dont think he is going to take us forward. I would like to see MON take a punt at Rafael Van Der Vaart very good player IMO and would proberbly sign. Carnt see siejder coming would be nice just carnt see it, bigger teams would make their move if we went in for him.

Strikers, havent really got an issue up front i think we have the players already. If carew can stay fit for the season and thats a big if he will score 20 goals next season easy the EPL is made for him. Gabby for his age is Quality he wasnt far behind most strikers in league for goals and assists last season, he will only improve. Heskey and the fonz are goood cover for both player plus webcam could play off carew and milner spoilt for choice IMO.

Rafael van der Vaart is indeed an excellent player but surely only as likely to come as Sneijder?

Also the way we get players without someone else stealing the deal is we have a manager who keeps his mouth shut so hopefully we should be able to do well off the back of that.

Agree with you re: Distin and Campbell as per my earlier post. I'd be happy if we got those two defenders, another pick for the future and a creative player who would play in the hole behind Carew to give Ashley some competition for an attacking support striker role... Which probably rules out Veloso but would definitely rule in Rafael van der Vaart... smilies/smiley.gif

No more midfielders just yet, unless we can offload Sidwell and buy in a decent attacking midflield with experience at international level. Which I think is achievable. Other players will have just seen us win the Peace Cup (I know it was only a friendly!) and just maybe see us as a great prospect and with some words from MON I do reckon we can land a Rafael van der Vaart or Klaas-Jan Huntelaar type in the next couple of weeks.

A couple of decent defenders and I reckon we are sorted. Striking option we have at present. Wait till January for another striker. Carew and Fonz at the moment first two choices. We even have Ash Young who I would play as a striker in the Ronaldo type role. He will score for fun in that role.

Welcome back Chris...Have a good holiday..? smilies/cool.gif

I've gone for fifth... I don't think on the evidence of current squad we will have the ability to break the top four but a season or two at fifth would certainly provide a good foundation to build to get into the top 4.

I for one would not be calling for MONs head if we aren't in the Champions League in the next 2-3 years - the man knows what he is doing and building a successful brand takes a lot of considered effort and time...

Agree re: that statement - certainly plenty of people seem to know Sneijder more than RvdV.

Plus Rafael took a move to Hamburg rather than Real originally so clearly he understands the structure of the game, the benefit of playing well in a relatively good team and isn't a mercenary who wants it all now...

Why do we want Keane for???

Besides the fact he played for 254 clubs last season, just exactly what does the guy have that the Fonz or Gabby doesn't?

We already have 4 strikers (Heskey, Carew, Gabby and the Fonz) who will more than likely be bidding for one place in the team given our penchant for midfielders...

So why would we spend out over £10m on Keane? If nothing else, I would restrict the amount of money we offer to the Spuds to a bare minimum (although Jenas would be a better use of £10m)...

I'd prefer to see Cuellar given a proper run, I feel he definitely has the makings of a very good CB.

Agree with AK regarding Distin - I think he would have been signed by now if we were really after him. I think MoN man have someone that nobody has mentioned in mind.....but thats just a hunch!

One think is sure we need 2 center halfs - i'd imagine one relatively big name, possibly Upson, and one old experienced one. Sorry but I have absolutely no time for Davies.....

I well remember the article you refer to Damian. At the time many of us bought into the idea that MoN was going to thumb his nose at the FA for snubbing him - twice. His buy English trend (I daren't say policy) certainly seems to bear up that thought, and is surely unique in the modern Prem. After Martin's first year I had visions of Villa lifting the major trophies with a solid core of English (and England) players. Those visions are gaining clarity every time Martin dips his toe into the transfer water.

Totally agree...

Davies and Cuellar need to pair up with one of Distin and Campbell, preferably on opposing sides in training to help them develop.

Davies was a big cost for who he currently is but long term he will probably prove his worth.

Sidwell is a good player but won't fit I don't think even with the 4-5-1

Petrov, NRC, Downing, Young, Milner, Albrighton, Gabby... Can you see him putting any of them out of the team? Fact of the matter is he is most probably a backup for Petrov or NRC and I don't even think he is defensive enough to be either...

the gooners although they lost a few im sure wenger will strengthen soon, liver-poo wont be as lucky as last season and look like losing their best player (alonso) mancs wont be as strong without tom daley.....oh i mean ronaldo.... n ancelotti will only last 3 seasons summer, autumn n winter.

Therefore i think spurs n man shitty will improve on last season leaving everton finishing a solid 6th, then last but not least villa, i see us still the team most likely to challenge top4 if we can get a solid 2 cb's and not be burnt out by crimbo..

distin/dunne

Reads the game way better and has more pace.
But I get the feeling something is wrong between him and Spuds and melted welly face wants him out. I noticed Spuds fans slated him on the few occasions he played and he was a hero when he left for pool.

Beye is however a decent player, getting on at 31 but a solid fullback who can also deputise in the middle as well as featuring on either flank in times of need. He fast became a fans favourite at Toon at that can't have been easy last season. Plus he is one of the few Allardyce signings and that guy has a habit of picking up a bargain foreigner. Similar to Bouma in that he never seems to doanything amazing, but also never seems to screw up. Easily Toons most consistent performer over the whole season and probably a more natural player than Steven Taylor.

Badger i think Young lacks the tricks to become a really top class winger. He was just too predictable at times last year. I would love to see him in a floating role where defenders would find it hard to pick him up plus would also get the ball in more dangerous centre positions.

As we stand i would play Milner on the left to come in on his dangerous foot and get more shots on goal which we don't see enough from a player with a great shot like him, would put Albrighton on the right and would pair Young in the hole with Carew.

Just need to sort out the CM. Van Der Vaart with Petrov and that would be some midfield.

I think the only players to leave should be Harewood, Salifou, Osbourne and maybe Sidwell. Our squad is tiny and although these players arnt world beaters, we do need numbers!

Saw Joe Kinnear down Villa Park today, it was allegedly for the launch of a footy manager computer game but with all the other lame sightings he may just be our new CB.

As for Sneijder, anyone else think it seems to be the De La Red link of last season revisited. Sounds great, great player, but ultimately going to end in disappointment.

Sorry to be so negative, I'll put a positive slant on it........if M'ON is at least bidding for this quality of player then his ambition in the transfer market should not be questioned.

Yeas, but there was no reported bids for De la Red and we know MON wanted Sneijder prior to him moving to Madrid. May well end in disappointment, however, I believe a little more substance to the reports than last year. We still haven't replaced GB and its only 10 days to the season. It does seem that MON is aiming high as he could have snapped up numerous lesser alternatives by now. He must feel he's in with a shout or else wouldn't be wasting valuable time.

Between sun and tues!

Rob

Hope you are right, if a bid has gone in then it certainly shows the pedigree that he is looking to bring in. Now Alonso has gone to Madrid he is going to be even more down the pecking order so we can only hope.

Just feel that some people on here latch on to a name without any substance. SSN reports several clubs are linked with a player, the player goes to another club and the same people come on here and slag Martin off for missing out......we were never linked with him, someone has put 2 + 2 together and come up with Barry's waistline!!

Sneijder is quality and has the ability to control and dictate play, I'm just not counting my chickens. Fingers crossed though mate.

Don't know enough about Defour or Veloso to comment.

Royston Drenthe, who signed for Real Madrid from Feyenoord in the summer of 2007, has found playing opportunities somewhat hard to come by in the Spanish capital.

He has constantly been linked with a transfer as part of the Dutch exodus at the club following the appointment of Manuel Pellegrini as coach.

But Drenthe has now reiterated his intention to play a major role in president Florentino Perez's new regime.

"I am in form and I will stay at Real," Drenthe told Algemeen Dagblad. "The coach spoke with me and gave me trust.

"He has used me in three different positions on the left, which shows that there are more options for me. I will fight to play."

Drenthe added that he worked hard on his fitness during his holiday "to prove to everyone what I am worth."

Dunne - great in the air and would tackle a lampost.
Distan - athough getting on a bit is still the best CB we could get for under 5 mil plus he is still rapid and an absoluste unit!

Also tuncay would be a great signing totally different to anything we currently got and if we don't snap him up soon I have a feeling he'll be at anfield next season if they don't get david villa!

Would love Richards but can't see it happening! Shame

Haggleland is still up in the air as he is still yet to put pen to paper outside bet
I dont think warnock or the newcastle 2 will transpire MON is building for future with quality so young kids or top drawer only these three are not top drawer
I believe MON is close to bringing in at least two top drawer players one before this week ends
If we get one or more of the madrid 4 surplus to requirements i think it will be on season loans with view to sign this will give MON a crack at top four and unload if it fails or they dont fit in
I think we will be in for some surprises on team selection
brad guzen will start between the posts and i hear its his shirt to lose
big brad as cover and develop as coach
MON will not shy from the kids so i see delph going straight in

heres my team for wigan
Guzen
Lichaj
Davies
Cueller
shorey
Petrov
delph
milner
young
albrighton
carew
this will allow young to hang off carew milner through the middle
delph down the left
exciting

Loan agreement mentioned certainly makes sense. Doesn't commit the club financially and also may well suit the player if he has any reservations. Having said that, if the latter I don't really want a non - fully committed player who doesn't have total belief in what MON is trying to achieve.
Reegarding team for Wigan. Would obviously prefer Luke Young at RB if fit and (because I don't have complete faith in our ability to defend at the moment) would initially like the security of Reo Coker in there.
This is all subject to no further additions of course!

But villa have such a good balance about then, team spirit and harmony.
Spurs will have to sell in jan due to the unrest guranteed!

Redface did the same at Pompey and he will f**k up spurs aswell. I rather mon buys good quality at good prices.

The only thing that worries me is that villas official website is unchangee from when delph signed! WTF villa get it sorted. Dunne is slow, he score own goals for fun and has the record for red cards in Premier League, because he has to foul players to stop them. You need pace to compete in the modern game and Cahill, Distin and Upson are all more reliable than Dunne. And all the players I have mentioned are realistic targets SUNSHINE!

I would argue however if he's surrounded by average defenders (which he is believe me) that makes it harder for him to organise the Irish defence which has done brilliantly over the last year. Not a small task playing against teams like (are listening keef)Italy and Bulgaria.

Anyway, lets set one thing straight here. I don't think either myself or limerick are saying buy Dunne and throw him into the first team. In fact i agreed with keef on some of his targets. I would like to see Hangeland and Dunne coming in which would give us (Davies/Cuellar/Hangeland/Dunne). I see your point Rocksteady, haven't seem Ireland play really since Houton (i think) scored that cracker at the world cup so can't comment much. It's just I like CB's with pace and Dunne has none, although clever defending can make up for this like Laursen.

Ireland have had some great Villa players over the years i remember growing up and the Villa team seamed dominated by Irish players, so i would never slag off the Irish lads. But, what current Irish players would get into and improve the Villa team, Keane maybe?

Also Hangeland is going nowhere he played in Europa and is cup tied, think we need to move on from him.

testie - to be honest I wouldn't have Keane. He's one player that is way too inconsistent for both club and country. To answer your question, I would only have Dunne and that would be as a squad player. I'm not trying to champion Irish players for Villa, just Dunne as a squad player.

I agree the Hangeland cup tied thing is a pain in the ass but based on his and his agents quotes I don't think he was ever going to move away from Fulham.

Rocksteady- I think Keane messed up leaving Spurs for the chance of rubbing Rafas belly.

Hangeland would have been a great signing it's a shame he's staying at Fulham but it is nice to see some player loyalty.

I think we will just have to wait and see who we sign, MON dosen't let anything out before the move has pretty much happened and it seams the press can be bothered to even make up rumors.

If we get another 4 in then we will be a much better team this season, 2 CB, 1 AM and either RB/LB cover. Obviously this depends on the quality of players we bring in.

I know mate i'm getting well excited for the start of the season. There are just so many sub plots, especially with Man city.

What would you consider a proven striker, now i know i'm dreaming here but Wagner Love i think would be ideal however he has no PL experience would you consider him proven?

Well he plays for Moscow so he'll be able to handle the cold winters smilies/smiley.gif I don't mind about PL experience, just somebody has a proven record of scoring well at their previous clubs and Wagner Love definitaley fits that bill.

I would have taken Bent as he has proven he can score goals and I don't Harry filled him full of confidence. Remember when he declared at a news conference that his own mother could have scored a chance he missed - joke!

Beye put in some really good show's the first few week he got to England and i think if he was at a better team he could be a really good player, but he is 31 and i dont think MON would ever think about singing someone of that age and the most important thing we need to do is get a center back or even two before we get any cover at fullback smilies/grin.gifsmilies/grin.gifsmilies/grin.gif

MON would go for a 31 year old to provide cover. Lichaj is not ready and a couple of seasons behind young and beye learning will do him in good stead, by then beye will be too old and lichaj should be ready.

Runner, how old is heskey? how old is friedel? Beye would be a decent addition tho i agree. Solid, consistent, hard working and has some PL experience under his belt. show me another versatile international defender for under £4m Good business i say.

I'd just like to add that i really am not a fan of Richard Donkey, i think we need someone much more mobile. i understand that he is a good commanding voice in the defence but i just don't want him at villa. there are better options out there.

Also, where is all this talk about delph playing down the left coming from? the guy is an attacking CM. picks the ball up from deep and spreads it from a central position and weighs in with a few goals too. if anyone ends up down the left instead of ash it'll be bannan or downing.

Where is todays blog? boohoo.

Habib Beye would indeed be a shrewd signing. People keep moaning about the squad size, but when MON tries to buy some cover they're not happy. Luke Young could be out at the start and Lichaj is inexperienced so I think he'd be a good addition, and some competition for the place.
Bring him in UTV!

I'm backing MON all the way, but after being optimistic yesterday, I'm getting a bit worried. Season starts Saturday week and still no replacement for either Laursen or Barry. Considering MON went on record about the small squad last season before we lost Laursen and Barry he must surely be very close to bringing in a number of players (and two of them must be of the highest quality). However much I would love Sneijder I have a feeling that if we are turned down, there will be very little time (or decent players) left to go elsewhere.

Found this on football-rumours.co.uk

I have heard from a very good source that Aston Villa are at an advanced stage in talks with CSKA Moscow about their young attacking midfielder/ striker Alan Dzagoev.

Martin O'Neill has been tracking the youngster ever since Villa played CSKA last season.

A deal of approx 14M Euros is the figure I have been told.

Villa Insider - Unlikely

Tuncay is staying at Borro for at least another season, thats what SSN said anyway, i think we have really missed out on a class act in Tuncay but maybe next year, all i think we need now befor the start of the season is two defenders and a striker but the two at the back are the most important but what do people think about having a punt on Claudio Pizarro, he may be 30 but after not making it at Chelsea he has gone out on lone at Werner Breman and had a really good season scoring 17 in 26 and for the German league that is a very good season and i also think with his style of play he would play well with both Gabby and Carew smilies/grin.gifsmilies/grin.gifsmilies/grin.gif;
