I'd love to be able to tell you something about the match today that would inspire a feeling of confidence, but I'm not even feeling that pre-match optimism that makes me believe we have a chance, if we do everything right.

I feel, right now, that if we leave Newcastle with anything it will be down to luck and we should be grateful. Not that they are really that much better than us - they just have a manager that sends his team out to win. We could beat them with a proper manager.

So, you know my frame of mind and for that I apologise. There is however some news that is just news and you've probably heard about it, but the new kit manufacturer is going to be Macron and well, it just goes to show that our special relationship with Nike, was actually in fact, not a special relationship and just more PR blarney.

A kit manufacturer is just a kit manufacturer and I'm actually happier with Macron because we are a special account for them, in some regard and as long as we have final say on the design of the kit, all will be good and they've done some nice ones.

This news was accidentally announced by Macron and I cant for a moment think that it matters and it shouldn't, but it will. Who wants to buy a copy in claret and blue when we have a new one coming, hopefully in plenty of time before the season starts.

Back to the match

Yohan Cabaye and Cheick Tiote are both missing for Newcastle today but they do have Demba Ba and Papiss Cisse available with Cisse possibly making his debut after joining from SC Freiburg in January after scoring for fun in Germany.

And we've got Alex McLeish wanting more 'snarling' in the dressing room. I'm only joking, I really am. If we can continue playing the way we did against QPR after going two down, you never know what will happen.

Updates, banter and odds

Odds are here for lots of matches and below for today and as soon as we have any team news or anything else, it will go below. Don't forget to also register to the right if you want your comments to appear instantly - if you don't, you can expect a a short delay today.

The team

Given, Hutton, Cuellar, Dunne, Warnock, N’Zogbia, Ireland, Petrov, Clark, Bent and Keane start. On the bench; Guzan, Weimann, Gardner, Bannan, Baker, Lichaj and Heskey.

83rd.

I think there will be a few goals, a la the Arsenal match. Our comedy defence will definitely concede a goal or two, especially with goal machines Ba and Cisse against them. It could be embarrassing if Warnock and Dunne play as badly as in previous games.

However, I think there are goals and creativity in us so I expect us to grab a couple of goals.

i'd not say i was typical. but you've got a decent (not really great) manager and are doing well

we have a manager from the clowns next door who has been relegated twice from this league and look at our league position and his stat of winning one every four games

not much reason to feel positive. especially when you add to that the club is in more debt today than it ever has been and the owner takes out more and more each year for himself

We will only win if Warnock is left on the bus or at least on the bench. As for Hutton, watch Jonas Guiterrez tear him apart.

Seriously, I hope AMC drops Warnock as if he doesn't, then I suspect he wants us to lose every game. I also hope Ireland, Keane, Bent and Agbonlahor/Nzogbia link up well today.

It will be a cold day in Newcastle, so thank God I am in warm Seychelles and watching the game on satellite with a cold beer in hand. UTV

Actually looking forward to today's game for once, expecting goals I reckon 4-3 Villa with Bent getting 3 I think his confidence is sky high at the minute and he is in a good run of form.
Hopefully we can boss the midfield if they have no Cabaye or Tiote and control the game, we have to just attack them otherwise we will lose they can't defend and neither can we just gotta create more than them.

Glad to here about macron, heard we got rid of nike because of their poor quality .

I'm feeling strangely confident too - a few people (not you of course Damo) seem to have taken a lot of heart from the fightback and the general performance against QPR.

And - I agree - probably in spite of the manager we've got some hunger back.

Today? I'm watching with a load of Geordies and Plastic Geordies, so please God a win. I'd settle for a draw but got a feeling 2-1 Villa.

Damian: I agree to a point but the good news is that he isn't O'Neill who ruined our team for a generation. If only the vitriol aimed at AM had been heaped on Mon early enough to stop him wasting 100 million we wouldn't be where we are now. Given his resources, some of the football is more entertaining than under Mon when we rarely had the majority of the possession. For those who withstood the cold of Wednesday night they would have witnessed hardly any off the ball running in the first half — scandalous considering what they get paid — but some good passing and movement second half. Playing the footballers Ireland and Zog is key. But you would think that would be obvious.

Still really concerned over the middle of the park, the only reason Stan and clarke had the ball in the second half the other night was because QPR did a villa and completely stopped playing.

Im not sure that they are capable of taking control of the game from the start when the opposition are equally as keen but hopefully i'll be proved wrong!

I do fear us at the back though against Ba's quality and the power and pace of Best, not sure what else Warnock and Hutton can do and still not be dropped???

I was sceptical about Keane but we would've been hopeless without him so far...I hope Gabby and all the kids watch Keane's movement. A great example of Keane was that dummy he played for Bent. No technical skill required, just brains.

Also this half shows how badly we lack width and pace because we've played everything thru the middle and looked SOOO toothless. With Clark and Petrov in the middle we have no threat whatsoever, and it looks like Clark is becoming a worse player beside Petrov the human Traffic Cone.

They don't offer protection to the defence or support to the attack. Bring on Gardner or Bannan for Clack or Petrov...that's if he wants to win of course???

When you play for the draw you will always expose yourself to the goal. Bannan on at half was a poor sub, and Heskey on was simply idiotic. Should have been Gardner on for Petrov, even though NZogbia dribbles too much, he involves himself and runs all day.

Keane has been at the heart of anything good we have done today, so when you decide to hoof it up for the last 20 you make instantly make your most threatening player useless.

This is why we dont want this idiot in charge

MCLEISH has messed it up again. took our best midfielder off in IRELAND, took off a tricky winger N'ZOGBIA for a lump HESKEY. The team just the ball forward now.
The game has gone now though. MCLEISH OUT.
The whole back four is garbage. DUNNE has cost us another goal, WARNOCK and HUTTON dont close down wingers and always hit hopeful balls down the wing which goes straight back to the opposition.

Something needs to happen now, this is getting stupid now. Every game the defence is costing us.
BENT has been poor today, outmuscled but he is a poacher and will score goals so ill let him off.

We are lucky that Wigan, Blackburn, Wolves, QPR, WBA, Fulham are worse than us.

Warnock, Hutton and Dunne is awful, Houllier were right when he wanted to get rid of Warnock, Dunne and Collins. Our attacking force is good, Bent, KEane, IReland, Zoggy and GAbby are good players, but in the summer we have to change the defence complately.

Without a shadow of a doubt, we have quite simply the worst full backs in the Premier League. Hutton never once stopped a cross from coming in and just strolled around without a care, Warnocks contribution was as always to give the ball away cheaply and to try and get himself knocked out. Heskey substition totally baffled me, just want to know what AMC thought he could provide for us. Gary Gardner MUST start, if the scottish t**t cant see what quality he brings, then we have no hope. If you look at the replay for his second chance, it was going into the corner of the goal until it deflected of a Newcastle dafeneder. Hes brought more to the game in the 5 mins he was on the pitch than Petrov brought all game!

Played some good stuff today but Bent needs someone up front with him. Gardner should be starting. AMc worries me bringing Heskey on, he's got to go and so has AMc oh and Lerner!

Not going to get down about losing this game it was always going to be a difficult one especialy at the toons place, but what happened after half time im not certain as i was getting a bite to eat and a mug of tea but when i did get back to watch the full ending i saw heskey on the pich who the commited a foul and they went down and scored hesky seems better at giving fouls away for the opposition to score than he gets goals for the actual team he plays R so why play him is my question?Othwer than that the first half we played some good footie second half we struggled wether that is down to changing players at half time only they will know that. But as always i still follow the team strongly ONWARDS AND UPWARDS LADS.

sorry guys and girls but we are in deep trouble, warnock has to go, appreciate he flys into tackles but he isnt good enough- play baker, did well under gh,

the centre of midfield...clark/petrov ha to be the slowest in the league, clark simply isnt good enough in there. mct**t has to find a way of playing ireland in the middle. nzog was awful and terribly greedy, when he FINALLY passed we scored! Not sure about him, attitude stinks.

bent needs to improve his hold up play... when we pass we look pretty good, but for the best part of 30 mins in the 2nd half we just lumped it forward... and finally... the manager... you have to be the most negative, dull individual who has ever been involved in the game of football at the professional level... i want you out of OUR fantastic club NOW!

Bring out the banners of MCLEISH OUT or stop going to the games.
Something has to happen now because he single handed that game to Newcastle taking our creative players. GARDNER should be in the team and BANNAN.
Id tell MCLEISH to fcuk off as well. especially when is playing with a load of retards such as DUNNE, HUTTON,WARNOCK,HESKEY

Clarke has only one place in the villa team, and that's in central defence,he's just stationery in midfield, utterly a waste of space in midfield. As i type this, just saw the goals they scored again in slow motion, and that son of a bitch Dunne left Cisse unmarked, and against QPR he just f**king stood there watching Djibril Cisse score without even an attempt to block the shot?Warnock yet another son of a bitch, with that horribly mistimed tackle on a newcastle player prior to their opener, which was a sure penalty.Everytime i see those idiots signed by MON ,it makes my blood boil, and i hate MON even more than before.smilies/angry.gif

So that's another game we haven't won whilst having keane here. How many more games have we got him for before we revert to even worse football?

I know bannan has his fans, but too light weight, Gardner every day for me.
we cannot afford Petrov and Clarke, just one of them (Clarke) and add more creativity to the midfield.
Heskey! why??? did nothing.
you wait and see, once he can pick Heskey, Gabby he will have em both in!
there is not a lot of difference between us and Newcastle, they are just more disciplined, and because of they they are joint 4th and we are near the bottom, or to put it another way, they have a better manager!

Remember 1 in 4 lads so what else did you expect?

You must admit... The Toon have got themselves one hell of a strikeforce in BAAAAA and Sissy.

I just don't know why AMc persists with the same stale defenders game after game... Either he is afraid of upsetting them or he is forced to play them to justify their wages. I say Faulkner has to go first otherwise we'll end up with another McClueless manager and not a young hungry talented manager who wants to play football. Oh to have manager with a philosophy...

Warnock hasn't got a clue, hutton is a clueless chicken, in fact they way we would be linking up play once keane has gone wories me.
AMC out along with hutton and warnock, both two of the worst fullback i have ever seen, very poor indeed.

question today is: why the rubbish 2nd half?

was feeling quite good about it at half time, not great but it was OK and sort of promising.

and, what is the actual story of Ireland - what about those rumours on here of some sort of discipline thing?
