Morning all. I had some good news yesterday so took the opportunity to have a beer or two and I gotta tell you, I've found the secret to having a few beers and feeling great the next day; don't drink beer in your own private race.
But, how I feel is of no interest to you, what interests you is the fact we are playing Manchester United today at Old Trafford and well, some will say this is the best time to be playing United, and they might very well be right, but I don't think so.
However, last season we scored twice and we had three more shots on target so maybe this time round we can have a few more and maybe, because they are weaker defensively, we'll score more because we'll have better opportunities or more time. Problem is with Manchester United, it really isn't about scoring, it's about stopping them from scoring.
It isn't about scoring against Manchester United, it is about stopping the likes of Rooney and Berbatov and if we can do that, we do stand a chance.
Pre-Match Banter
Martin O'Neill
We are going there with plenty of confidence because we are playing well at this minute and it is up to us to try and push on. There will be no mental block about going to Old Trafford.
Football Betting
We can't have a post without a look at the odds at PaddyPower. You'll get 6/1 for an Aston Villa win today and if you are feeling confident then all you have to do is click here to make a bet. I won't be, I'll be having some of the 3/1 for a draw.
Aston Villa Links
We have a links page if you want to have a look, but please, if you find links today that might interest us, drop them in the comments below. This is a good link if you want to watch the game today. Don't sign up three minutes before kick off and then come on here asking for help to get it to work, it has nothing to do with us and they do have pretty good instructions on the site.
Team news and updates coming later. Twitter updates all day and I'm hoping for a bit of banter with so many other matches kicking off before us today.
Team NEws
O'Neill isn't making any changes from the team that beat Hull.
Friedel, Young, Cueller, Dunne, Warnock, Young, Downing, Milner, Petrov, Heskey and Gabby.

... As always, i'll be looking at the performance. True man utd are missing many regulars and in that respect - its a great time to play them. However, even if united played their entire second 11, they would expect to beat us. They will dominate posession today and the amount of counter attacking we do and the numbers we commit will be interesting. I think uniteds back 4 is their current weakness and if we are to take anything from the game - we have to be positive and counter attack in numbers. I dont have big expectations for us today, i dont think we have played well consistently in a very long time - and Paddy Power offering so called top 4 contenders at 6/1 against a weakened united would suggest the money min dont think so either. I hope i'll be pleasently suprised but i really doubt it. Head says 3-1 united |

... robbo - you may think its a treat for your wife, but frankly old trafford is one of my least favourite away grounds. They stick you right up the top so that the overall effect is like watching two teams of ants through the slot in a letter box, the beer is gassy and overpriced in the ground and I have yet to find any decent pubs nearby to visit before the game. Couple this with the usual last minute crippling equaliser/winner for Manure and the whole experince is as enjoyable as having someone run an auger bit through your frontal lobe. Still, I hope you have a nice day out On the plus side, now we have Milner in the middle we actually look like we can play football instead of just lumping it forward, so who knows - today could be the day. |

... I'm sick of dreading these matches,so today I'm doing my bit for the team by pushing beyond optimism to the heights of downright confidence! Can we beat them ??? You'd better f**k**g believe it. Paddy Power betting is giving 2600-1 against Utd , Chelsea , Spurs & Arsenal losing this weekend . Now thats a MANS bet ( i might risk a tenner !) |

... This is a no-lose situation for the Villa I believe we will win. I have no argument or statistics to back that up, I just believe it because I want to believe it. But MON, please, let's have a go at them, and if we go 1 - 0 up don't for God's sake sit back and wait for the ref to add on enough minutes for them to beat us. The top four hold no fears for us anymore. We can see the whites of their eyes. Let's go for their throat. |
MozzerG
said:

... The eternal optimist in me says we'll get a draw. That's how I feel about this fixture, I can't see any way we will win it. That said, it is our best chance in a while, this is by no means a great United side. I don't care if they've got defensive worries, that's not the most important thing if you ask me. Carrick and Fletcher both make fine defenders so that won't really make things any easier for us. For me, it's United's midfield we need to take advantage of. I don't think it's been this weak for many years. |

... Just looking at the two likely line ups today in the sun, and without rose tinted glasses on (aswell as getting an opinion from a spurs fan) we look a better team than man utd , except the front two. If you could swap rooney for hesky ther would be no contest! The only problem is with utd, that no matter who they put out they just seem to win games, pass and move , create space and it sometimes looks effort less, like they did to a good spurs side in the carling cup with on paper a much weaker side. Make no mistake it takes a huge, monumental effort to beat utd at old trafford and that is exactly what will be required today everyone will have to play well, but i cant remember a time when iv looked at man utds team and thought we look better than them!! Come on villa!! |

To place a bet i would go for a draw, i think it is important for us to not lose, we are playing well at the moment and it would be nice to go on an unbeaten run of 10 to 15 games. we are capable of it, but in a run like that you have to go to big sides and get something. Anyone know what the united defence will look like today. Id love to see gabby up against wes brown, young against gary neville. our pace up top will cause them problems who ever they put out, but if carrick is at centre back, you gotta fancy our front line to run him ragged. |

When we do go forward - we have looked great. Downing is awesome in posession and Milner looke good in the middle - at least now we dont have to see him cross. Damian - sorry but we are playing 4-4-2, and about as orthodox as that formation gets - with 2 out and out wingers. Sure one of the strikers drop back someimes - but they are still strikers! Anyway boring....but I just cant understand it being called 4-5-1. The acid test is now the second half. We have to keep our ambition and keep attacking them. We are not able to just sit and defend a lead.... Huge half time for MoN! |

... The first time i have seen the new look villa with Downing and Milner. What a difference it seems to have made, they both look comfortable on the ball and are always looking for it. Same again 2nd half with another early goal would be nice but you just know MON will bring off Heskey for Sidwell and sit on it...which will be the end of us!! |

... Good half, they were dangerous but only in patches as were we. Some decent passages of play but seen it all before so long way from confident yet although one big difference to previous years is that even though I know we will suffer a lot of pressure in the 2nd half the defence will dig deep and unlikely to do anything too stupid Did anyone see the Matrix style ESPN coverage, jumping back and forward a couple of seconds? Fergie practising his time control techniques for injury time? Quick gripe at the ref, while he did well to pick up he dive he has given every slight knock on a red as a free kick where as Gabi, Ash and Milner have all been blocked off or taken down and he's just waved play on. Also, 2 Man U players have gone down under pressure and grabbed the ball assuming a free kick with no whistle and the ref has just given the free kick. Who's refing the game, him or the Utd payers Anyway, so far so good but a long 45 to 55 minutes to come |

... United will change things up for the second half, you can bank on that. Rooney will have someone decent to work with so we'll have to defend even better. We need to look for a second, that should be our approach. Sometimes attack is the best form of defence. |

... I love our defence this season, it gives confidence to players like Petrov who can be let off the leash instead of worrying about being caught forward. We have to keep counter attacking as it has them on the back foot at times. Also has anyone else noticed Heskey's work rate? |

Just seen the goal again, great play by Gabi, receives the ball under pressure, holds his defender off spins, lays it off, runs in to the box and good finish from a pin point cross by Ash Despite his shortcomings he is becoming a hell of a player For all their pressure Brad didn't have to make too many saves until last 20 minutes Hope Warnock not out for long |

On the plus side, now we have Milner in the middle we actually look like we can play football instead of just lumping it forward, so who knows - today could be the day.
!!! Villa will never have a better chance to win with United defense in the shape its in. Today is the day we've been hoping for!
