Aston Villa v Arsenal: Updates, team news, odds and fear of a spanking

That was a nice weekend and after all the games were played we're still eleventh. You can't complain can you? Especially if we get something from this match because if we do, we move up a place.

I know also that that isn't likely but nobody expected us to beat Arsenal on the first day of the season and we did. And this isn't me suggesting that we can win tonight, I don't think that will happen, but anything is possible especially in football.

Okay, I'm starting to become optimistic about tonight, but that will soon fade after the caffeine has worn off or I've finished with this post. And that's because it's January 13th and the transfer window has been open long enough for us to fix what we needed to fix and we haven't.

And I know not many people are doing business, but we need to and why wait until the end of the window only to potentially lose out. I'm not moaning, I'm leaving it there.

A potential spanking from Arsenal

So instead, we'll have a look at the opposition and apart from the opening day, Arsenal started well. In fact, if they win tonight they go back on top, so it's fair to say that this isn't going to be an easy game. They have all the incentive they need and I do fancy this can be their season.

I know it's hard to look further than Manchester City, but Arsenal still have the transfer window and there need isn't as vital as ours. they've got Fulham and Southampton after us in January and Wenger probably didn't see an urgent need.

But they will need an extra player or two and if they get those players, I do think they can win the league, but because it's Arsenal, if they don't, all those supporters that turned on Wenger after we beat them 3-1 at the start of the season, that love him now and never ever turned in the first place, will turn on him again.

This season is the chance they've been waiting for. If they don't do it this season, I don't think it will happen again under Wenger, because you don't need to be a rocket scientist to work out that when Ferguson retired, it created the best opportunity they have had in years.

Updates, team news and odds

So, with that written, I'd love us to beat Arsenal tonight but it is a massive ask. It doesn't mean it wont happen and as I'm coming to the end of the post, I'm starting to think it wont. And if I had to put my mortgage on a bet, I'd put it on Arsenal winning and I don't think they'd be many that did differently.

I mean, just look at the odds here. We are 11/2 as the home side and Arsenal are 1/2 - nobody thinks we are going to win tonight and even the draw is 10/3. It's going to be hard, but there is that chance.

But that is it for now, I'm going to finish my breakfast and kick on. I'll be back later, but with you in spirit all day. And at about 7pm tonight, I'm sure the optimism will return, after a glass of wine or two.
