If Arsenal win tonight they could go top of the table. If we win tonight we could move into fifth place. If my wife comes home in the next hour she will make me lunch. It is a big if and I'd love her to, but if she doesn't, I'll take it in my stride, much like I will tonight if we don't get three points.
However, we can beat Arsenal. On our day, we can beat any team and we have shown that this season but also over the past two or three and while it will take a tremendous effort by all that start, it is possible and well, if we do win, I wouldn't actually be surprised.
Saying that, I wouldn't be surprised by any result tonight and I think that just goes to show that we can win, but also on our day, as shown by the result at Arsenal, that we can sort of just not turn up. But, we are at home tonight and we really don't like going to London.
Early Team News
Nigel Reo-Coker and John Carew are not available tonight. There is also a chance that Stephen Warncok won't make it and Marc Albrighton is out also, although we wouldn't have expected him to start, despite his brief appearance in the FA Cup and setting up a goal so early on before coming off injured.
If Warnock is injured, it does mean that we will quite possibly start with a centre back at left back and right back tonight, which will be interesting and also slightly worrying, but I think it will be okay and as of yet, nothing is confirmed.
Updates and Banter
I'm feeling in positive mood today and as such I think I'm going to sit back and join in with the banter and see how much coffee I can drink. We will update this page with any bits of information we get and as and when we get the team news, we will add it also. I might also give Twitter a break until kick off as it is getting a bit much.
Prediction Time
So, your predictions below please and seeing as I have one t-shirt left (some are going out this week if you have received an email about getting one but it hasn't arrived yet) if you get it right and you are the only one, you win it. If more than one person gets it, all your names go into a hat and I draw the winner.
Team News
Friedel, Cuellar, Dunne, Collins, L Young, Webcam, Milner, Petrov, Downing, Agbonlahor and Heskey.
The bench: Guzan, Sidwell, Delph, Delfouneso, Davies, Shorey and Beye.

... Ok, maybe i'm commiting blog suicide but im predicting a 0-2 Arsenal victory, they just look awesome this season, and although we can be great on our day, i'm not sure our great is better than theirs at this moment in time. However, I hope we do beat them, then we could say we did the entire 'big 4' in the space of one season. Really hope Warnock makes it and that Luke Young goes back on the right with Carlos moving to the middle and Collins dropping to the bench. Thats the A-team, does Mon know it? |

... 2-0 to Arsenal I'm afraid Luke Young left back, Cuellar right back, no Carew... They're gonna exploit us big time I fear. ... Warnock, Carew and NRC are out. Petrov struggling.?? Whats the team without those four.... Friedel Young Dunne Collins/Cuellar Beye/Cuellar Young Milner Delph Downing Heskey Gabby It may be too early to throw Delph in at the deep end but we may have to. Its either that, or Sidwell (who doesn't work in a 4 midfield) or drop Heskey to play a five midfield with Sidwell Delph and Milner. Given how Heskey played in the Semi I don't think he should be dropped (he was close to MOTM) so maybe radical, as hitting on the break is always one of our most effective tactics but maybe drop Gabby and play Heskey as lone striker with someone behind him (young or downing). If we were to drop one youngster in at deep end why not another...(assuming he's recovered from his knock) Albrighton, so we end up with Friedel Young Dunne Collins Cuellar Albrighton Milner Delph Downing Young Heskey But don't just lump it up to Heskey, get him to play as before dropping deep, to hold it up and play in the midfield. Which is basically a six midfield. Without Gabby we don't have the option of long ball for Heskey to flick onto Gabby but we have Milner, Delph and Downing as outlets to pick up the ball. Ash then has a completely free role, tracking back, playing just off Heskey or even in advance of Heskey, and swapping with Downing/Albrighton on wings to really confuse the defence. Gallas has been struggling so you never know, we may not out pass them, but we could pull them all over the place and be able to pass round them. Requires as many from midfield to get in box at every opportunity as possible, and I fear we might fade badly...but I think we should go for it, be three up at half time and hang on for an edgy 3-2 win ![]() UTV!! |

... 3-1 Villa. Why? Cos i think the pressure is on Arsenal more than us to get a result, and i think they would be happy with a draw. I can see us causing havoc with our set pieces into the box. They are not the best at defending crosses. I can see us holding on at 2-1, with Arsenal throwing the Kitchen sink at us, with either Gabby or Ashley deciding it with a late break away goal. We played poorly at the Emirates but this is at VP in front of a bumper crowd, and we WILL be up to this. Another reason i feel we will win this, is on how the big four have been dropping points this season. I cant see that stopping, since its how this season is. No need to play three centre Backs today, though i think Carlos will be at RB with Luke at LB. I think Martin will see him as a extra bit of height in their box, rather than ours. Damian, i was told you have been waiting 5 years for your wife to return and make your lunch |

... This one is a tough game to call, you say we can beat anyone on our day but arsenal dont have a day, its just natural to them to be the victors. Arsenal will be coming at us a lot no doubt about it, there passing is incredible to watch and some of the talent they have is brilliant too but we are a counter attacking team and if they are going to push us as much as i think they are i think we will catch them on the break more than just the odd time. I think they will get a goal but i think we are good enough and have enough pace and power to catch them on the break and even score from a set piece. Im going with a 2-1 win to villa but i think this will be a game where youre biting your finger nails down to your wrists. We will go 2-0 up early on but i think they will have the rest of the game coming at us and we will stand strong and defend. Recently it seems to be taking us about 15-20mins to get hold of games so I think if we can get to twenty minutes in without conceding then we have a very good chance of getting something out of this. ... I think whether Petrov plays or not has a big influence on the outcome of this match. He is best at retaining possession and controlling when to slow and speed the pace of the game up. My fear losing him would mean we lose some control, and I think Arsenal in control of a football game at the minute is not where Villa want to be. If we dont retain posession it means Arsenal have the ball and they will kep it moving and tire our young/fit team more than there young/fit team. Ideally I would say you want both Petrov and NRC in a 5 man midfield to retain possession and to get it back, but injuries mean this is impossible. I think the answer in this instance is to play Delph with Petrov and Milner and 1 up front, or play Milner and Delph and two up front, slightly risky, but if Sidwell plays this is more of a risk due his poor form, the guy seems devoid of confidence, highlighted by the fact he looked very much second best to Delph in the middle, playing against a League 1 team! Big shame about Warnock, but I think we should go with the most mobile defence we can against a superbly mobile side in Arsenal. Predicted 4-4-2: Friedel Cuellar-Collins-Dunne-L.Young A.Young-Milner-Petrov (or Sidwell)-Downing Heskey-Agbonlahor Desired 4-5-1 or 4-3-3: Friedel Beye-Cuellar-Dunne-L.Young Milner-Petrov-Delph A.Young-Agbonlahor-Downing I agree that Heskey played really well in semi final, however, think we should play with 3 centre mids because Fabregas is the best player in the league in my opinion and we need to keep him quiet! this leaves one up front, and I think Gabby is the best we have at doing this, although I would love to see Delfouneso play if we go with 2 up front! |

A win tonight would show those scouse bastards that we really mean business and that we will capitalise on anything they don't do well, especially if it's drawing with Wolves. Although you may be having a duplicate of a duplicate... They also explained that if someone was in my seat the stewards would sort it (which given you have your season ticket reference would be ok). They are used to this when blocks of tickets go undelivered or have problems with cards at turnstile. I also use this when someone else wants to use my cards but cant mail them to them in time, they go to the kiosk give the ref number and surname (and address if checked) and get a ticket. Youll be fine. |

... Cheers for that chaps, interesting reading. I think there will be some shuffling about in the summer and we may see a striker come in. Mon has said in another article that it's too early to put the pressure of league appearances on Fonz and he'd rather play him in the cups. The whole side looks reasonably comfortable on the ball and we certainly have a very talented, athletic and technically gifted midfield that is only going to improve over the next couple of seasons. It literally just is another player in a forward position with a cutting edge that we need. Either we buy someone who is creative as well as a finisher like Anelka or we get two players in. A creative attacking mid and a clinical poacher/striker. If MoN can't find the right man at the club he will bring someone in. He likes to give players a chance, but eventually he'll give up and sign someone. He has systematically addressed every issue we've had with the team since he came in and this is just the next job on the road of progress. |

...MON should bring him on at some point tonight. He basically said that it's difficult to come on and adjust to the pace and impact a game in the last 20mins. He said he'd prefer to give him starts and the cups are the perfect place to do this. He is obviously very aware of easing him in very gradually and not putting any pressure on him at all. I think maybe he would have liked to ease Gabby in more gradually as the pressure on that lad has probably been a contributing factor to his sporadic losses of form. Unfortunately it wassn't an option with the size squad we had at the time. If this is MoN's attitude to the last 20mins, it may explain his reluctance to make wholseale changes late in a game. One or two yes, but he rarely does it and this might be why. I think we have more chance of seeing Delph tonight, although I think he'll bring on Sidders if we need another midfielder on. I honestly think if Sidwell were to get a goal it might be the start of something for him. He just needs to get stuck in a bit more all round. He isn't a bad player when he plays, he just seems to not do much. If he made a couple of big tackles, ran loads and notched a goal every five games I'd feel much better about having him at the club. |

You have to be prepared to fight for your place at VP. Confused about Beye leaving, but tbh he was only bought last minute to cover while Young was out witha thigh problem and the death of his brother and we hadn't signed any CB's at that point so Cuellar was a must in the middle. We have a wee bit of cover now and needing funds for transfers in the summer it might be worth letting him go for a fee and recouping all the wages we'd have spent between now and the end of the season. I'll be sorry to see the guy go, but I do trust O'Neill. |

That image of Milner telling Beye (at Pool?) what to do and where to be won't leave my head. Apart from his crappy distribution down the touchline, I'm quite happy see Cuellar there as backup. ... Arsenal fans have every right to expect a win from this game. It is also a case of wishful thinking though, because they have four tough games coming up they see Villa as a soft touch compared to the others and believe this is their best chance to pick up three points. That aside I think we have enough to beat them tonight at home. They have a couple of players missing as do we, but we have something to prove in the league right now and this could be the game we go against the grain, put in a preformance and nick something. The Gunners would be foolish to underestimate us after the Emirates game and we all know we are capable of beating anyone when it clicks for us. I have an oarriding feeling that it'll be a score draw, maybe 2-2, but i'll say Villa win with a late winner from Downing to make it 3-2 Villa. |

The fact that you mentioned Real, Manure and Milan when mentioning Huntelaar must suggest he has something? Ok, it has not worked out well for him, but i can name loads of good players that have struggled to do well at either Real or Milan, then when sold, do well again. Maybe he is hankling for a move back to Holland? Point is, we need someone like him. There is no risk in a loan deal, so lets do it. Another i would try for, is Gudjonson. But i think he would have a nose blead moving anywhere north of Watford. |

...I'd take punt on him on loan, but is he the sort of player who'd fit at our club? I see him as a better version of Boyd. Not trying to bring this old chessnut up again but i just don't think that the addition of these types of strikers right now would help us that much. He is an out and out finisher and offers very little else. Can we afford to carry a player like this when his probable partner Gabby is limited in the technique link up play aspect of the game also? Even Real and Milan have found they can't afford a guy who is just on the pitch to put the ball in the net. I know im probably alone in thinking our main weakness is creativity more then finishing (i do think that is a problem also but thiswould improve if the chances being created were better and less predicatble). I just feel that if we started to play strikers like this with Gabby we would start creating even less chances for these finishers to put away. Only possible way i could see it work is being paired with Heskey or a better version of Heskey but that won't happen until the summer if at all. I can still see Keane coming this window though. I think Harry wants rid (which is why he was talking him up yesterday saying how good an attitude he has in the hope someone goes in for him) and he probably needs the funds from his sale to pay for whoever he is after this window. Perhaps MON is waiting in the long grass waiting for the price tag to come down as the clock starts to tick to the deadline? |

... We are due a goal storm in the Prem soon, why not tonight? Arse can always be expected to score too. So I will stick my neck out and go for a seven goal game with Villa scoring four. 4-3. Gabby to get his scoring boots on. MoN has been full of praise for the Fonz. I believe that next season he will be our first choice striker, and will reward us with twenty plus goals in the Prem. We may buy an older experienced striker (Keane?) as replacement for JC/Heskey but I doubt it. The area which MoN will target for strengthening will probably be midfield, we do need to find the big, strong defensive/creative man. Stan has done this really well this season, how long does he have? Can you see "wee Fabian" doing this? NRC and Sidders need to lift their games considerably to do that job. So I see a purchase with that job in mind. Someone suggested Collins in there, inspirational! That could actually work, and fits with MoN's ethos of re-inventing players. |

... andy, Some interesting points. I think Collins is good enough on the ball to play defensive midfield and his distribution suggests he'd probably make a better makeshift RB than Cuellar although he doesn't seem to have the spaniards pace. Delph is a shoe in in midfield, but rather than directly replacing Petrov I think we'll see him come in at the top of midfield and Milner will drop deeper. Milner can time a tackle as his times at fullback have shown and he has the engine to go box to box. He is quick, strong as an ox and can pick a pass so I think this is where we'll see him eventually with maybe another seaosn under his belt. Everything I've seen of Delph suyggests he is an attacking midfielder and reminds me little of Scholes in the way he plays. Looks like a better tackler, but his disciplinary record looks like it could shape up similar. I think next season might still be a little early for the Fonz, but he is making great progress. I think we'll sign a striker in the summer, but I think this ill be coupled with a sale, probably Carew. Heskey won't go, he's too valuable to us in the way we play right now and I can see him finishing his career under O'Neill which would be quite poetic and nice for the club. NRC and Sidders need to raise their games? I'd agree that there seems to be more to come from Sidwell, whether we'll ever see it will be a different matter, but I think a goal in open play would do him the world of good. NRC has shown what he can do and I believe he is a very valuable player to us. He is a huge character, has a lot of experience and gets stuck in despite not being as talented on the ball as others. I'd hate to see Nigel leave. |

... I think we might get a win tonight, I've just got that feeling! Yes ok so Cesc destroyed us last time but they're missing Song and Diaby so there's a complete lack of a good defensive midfielder. Arsenal have shown countless times that when they're missing their holding midfield player then they struggle. As long as we get stuck in when they attack then I think Milner, Downing and Young will do real damage going the other way. I think our injury problems can be solved quite easily whereas theirs can't. 2-0 to us! |

...i just can't see us getting anything from the match with the full back situation I know, and Wengar knows that we will have Cuellar at RB, Luke at left back. But Beye has played left back in the past, so why not just stick him there with Luke in his best position? Put Cuellar alongside Dunne? If does not work or we looked stretched, then with Collins on the Bench, he can change it fairly quickly. Sometimes the gaffer can be SOOooooo predictable! |

... Just reading back at some comments about our central defense. My pairing would be Dunne and Collins. Dunne is the obvious choice but I'd go with Collins over Cuellar because of his ability on the ball. Cuellar tends to hoof long balls a lot, Collins picks his passes. Also, Cuellar's got a clumsy side to his game and that always has me in a panic when he tries anything fancy! The fact is, a bit like managers saying they'd like 4 strikers, more often than not one doesn't get a look in and eventually leaves. We've got the same "problem" with our defense and for that, Davies' future looks doomed. |

... I must say, some of the suggestions of Collins as a defensive midfielder puzzle me, and I think it completely under values the job Petrov does. Milner and Delph in the middle would work as they could both be box-to-box style midfielders due to there work rate and mobility. You dont always have to have one hold and one attack, although I am more inclined to having 2 holding players or 1 in a 5 man midfield. Agree that Collins would make a better RB than Cuellar though as he is alot more comfortable on the ball, but cant see that ever been tried out, I would rather have Young or Beye there! |

... I'm going with 2-1 the Villa, but I can see more goals in it than that. The 3-2 predictions seem about right, though I don't know that I see us getting the three. I know MON won't do it, but I wouldn't mind seeing Delph in there strictly to harass Fabregas in a five-man midfield to clog up the middle. If we get stuck in, frustrate them from the off, we should be able to nick the ball off them while they play with themselves in midfield, and get up quickly to score. Or, we could sit back, let them play with themselves all night, show them too much respect and get thumped. But I'm going with the former. I'd like to think the 0-3 loss will be a motivator for the lads. I also think Fabregas being in the game from the off will be less destructive than having him come on and completely change things. |

He's preferred to leave his 11 out there for the most part, and wants them to fight through and experience all stages of the game. Learning how to hang on, experience adversity and success, and be accountable for both. |

Good news about Petrov, would have preferred a 5 man midfield from the start and then change to 4-4-2 if needed, but Petrov may have to come off anyway and we might see Delph...there is always a chance Heskey will get injured as well, then we could see Delph or the Fonz Come on Villa, 1-0 I am going for! |

... Well...we were the better team, certainly in the second half but you still felt that there was more imminent danger coming from the Arsenal boys - even if we had more possession...they have the craft, the knack of unlocking the door that we simply don't. 4 games, no wins, no goals - now I'm not a doomsayer but that certainly points to problems - in my view it is: 1. Crosses are failing to hit targets (and let's face it - that was our biggest source of goals) 2. Heskey not good enough (yawn)..he does contribute, but unfortunately not where Villa need it most 3. Gabby is being asked to do too much - it's too easy to blame him but he spends ALL game fighting for the ball with his back to goal - he just can't be expected to score from there 4. Downing has been massively disappointing after a promising start. From a very pragmatic point of view, we are a very solid team, but we just lack that bit extra - simple as that. |
Stan Balaban
said:

... Good game, could've won it. Ashley was superb today as was the defence. Downing was poor and missed a sitter. If only we could get both wingers playing well at the same time..... Having said that, there'd probably be no one on the end of the crosses anyway and that's our biggest problem. Lots of pace and good passing too which was pleasing, plus Delph coming on ahead of Sidwell was good too. Overall, slightly disappointed not to beat Arsenal (which says a lot) but the lads done well. Need to get scoring in the League again though but I fancy us to score against Fulham. UTV |
