Just a few hours to go and I'm walking tall. I have every confidence that we will be taking a trip to Wembley at the end of February and I know that I might be a little over confident, but I just can't see how Blackburn are going to do enough to win over the two legs.
Now, that isn't over confidence, that is speaking to football fans and listening to the radio and nobody can see Blackburn doing enough tonight to make the final. My confidence is growing on the back of what I am hearing all over the place. Is that wrong?
To team news; I don't think there will be many changes. I expect Guzan to come in for Friedel but apart from that, while I will not be surprised if Delph and Albrighton were to start, I don't expect it. I think we will see changes quite early in the second half if Blackburn haven't scored, but that will be for fresh legs and to shore up the midfield.
If Blackburn were to score, I expect a different story and they scored twice at the weekend, beating Fulham, so we know they have goals in them, but the threat is very much going to come from set pieces and long balls. I think defensively, we have enough to deal with that. I've just grown another inch.
Prediction
I'm not going to predict tonight, but I believe we will play in the final. I believe, deep down inside, that this is our season and Martin O'Neill won the League Cup twice with Leicester and on his day, he can get the players up for any game. I think he will do it tonight and I think Villa Park will help.
So, team new here as and when we get it. Your predictions and your preferred starting team below please. There are three t-shirts on offer for whoever gets the score right and if more than three predict the right score (after ninety minutes) we will draw the names from a hat or virtual hat anyway.
Team News
Guzan, Cuellar, Dunne, Collins, Warnock, Webcam, Petrov, Downing, Milner, Gabby and Heskey.
The bench: Friedel, L Young, Sidwell, Albrighton, Delfouneso, Delph, Beye.

... Guzan Young Cuellar Dunne Warnock Downing Petrov Milner Delph Young Gabby I know...he's never going to play 4-5-1, but that would be my side. Guzan gets to keep starting in the Cup, though it gets a bit tricky if we win. Hard to sit big Brad down in a cup final with all his experience. Not sure whether L. Young is fit. I'd like a bit more attacking menace down the right. But I can see Mon going with his four best defenders, Cuellar, Collins, Dunne and Warnock. |

... I fancy we'll win tonight. Rovers might get the backlash of not being able to hit a barn door on Sunday. I reckon they'll have a bit of the ball early as they come flying out of the blocks so we have to be vigilant at the back for the first 15-20 mins. I fancy after that we'll be all over them until the hour amrk and it's vitally important that we score while we're on top. If we score it's all over, but if it's still 1-0 after 70 mins we'll be on the ropes right to the end. I fancy a goal just before half time to settle the nerves and a second to make it 3-0 on about 75 mins when they're going for a goal to get back in it. Clean sheet and a 2-0 win on the night, but it'll be a tough game and they are bound to have a lot of chances. A big game for the defence inc. Guzan and Gabby has to up his game and get on the score sheet tonight. A big big performance from him is what is needed. |

Fingers crossed the players give us reason to cheer. Can't argue with Big Sam highlighting the importance of the first goal. If it falls to Villa you've got to fancy our chances. AND - although i might be sticking my non-existant reputation on the line , i think we're gonna go out and show them the TRUE Aston Villa Football Club tonight, and i can see this finishing 3-1 to us. I can see everyone being well up for this (as you would expect), and we all know how Gabby loves causing upsets in these big games, i can see him grabbing a brace perhaps with maybe Milner or Downing adding the other. This will be the first chance i've had to goto Wembley, ive always wanted to go and previous seasons i seemed resigned to do so watching England, but this is our chance, our time, and here's to the Villa boys grasping it with both hands and sending us into ecstacy as they do! I would expect the same as the West Ham game, except for Little Brad and hopefully Young at RB with Cuellar back at CB. As for the FA Cup game; A bench of Petrov, Gabby, Milner, Big Brad, Carew, Dunne and Young would allow Little Brad NRC, Delph, Albrighton, Fonz and perhaps Clarke to get a game with enough options should things go tits. |

If they come and park the bus and hope to keep it at nil all until the final 20mins and go for broke that could be far more difficult for us if we have another day like we did on Sunday. We have to score first either way. I think we will. Gabby to make up for the misses in a 2-0 win. I just wonder who MON will bring on as a sub on 60 mins tonight if Carew is out? This is going to be one of those games and as Fat Sam says, it's all about the first goal to me. Two scenarios; 1) We score first, they have to come at us, game over. 2) They score first, it shuts the crowd up, we play our usual stuff and don't score, then it really could go either way. And then I wouldn't fancy our chances. This will be one very tough game even though a big part of me thinks it should be a cake walk and we should win 3 or 4-1. Not here to stir trouble just interested in the chat and line ups. 1-0 win at our ground, very good start for villa, as alot have said - difficult to win at ewood. Now we come down to brummie and our away performance - agreed - is terrible. But we come on the back of a 2-0 win, and remembering we beat chelsea. Personally i think it will end 2-1 to blackburn with us scoring first and then head to penalties (no goals in extra time). From there its pretty hard to decide - friedel is a brilliant keeper for penalties so if he plays we will struggle. But robinson is also looking to make the england squad, and with 2 brilliant saves when we beat chelsea I think he will be fairly confident. Here's too a great game and whoever wins i think both teams have really worked for it. Personally i wish it had been the final as i don't want to see any manc teams to be there!!! |

... I think 4-3-3 on the attack 5-4-1 when defending would be the ultimate combination, with Cuellar being the extra midfielder so we got the extra height on corners and freekicks. Blackburn will have us under the cosch until we break, and they get a man sent off giving us a penalty, which we'll score. They'll come harder, we'll counter and Young will score a beauty. Dunne will pop up on a Downing corner just to finish them off then Milner will score to rub in a little salt. Benny McCarthy will then get sent off for kicking out, like he should have been in the first leg. Anyone wanna give me odds on that one. Come on Villa 4-0 |

... sorry to say so much, getting excited. Villa pass the ball. That'd please Damian. And I still love heskey. Ashley tries to be a little too ambitious, but then it nearly pays off so maybe he's using his football genius, or maybe he was just nearly lucky. A bad crot from Young nearly leads to another 'Burn goal, but the shot's wide. |

Alex Glynn
said:
|
... Gabby falls on the floor and gets a free kick. I don't think it should have been one but warnock kicks it so far backward it could as well not have been. Hang on a sec though, this is passing villa and we get the ball into a good position. As he has done a few times this game, however, Robinson clears. |
Chris Paine
said:
|
... And to be fair, he's been absolutely faultless in this Cup run until tonight - and even tonight he wasn't woeful. Just a slip or two and those happen to every keeper. |

... wont use the subs think you will see a very diffrent side on sat though |
Alex Glynn
said:
|
... Throw from Cuellar who can't play out of the centre because he needs space to mis-pass it passes it safely to the left, gets back to Heskey who controls it nicely and goes to gaby in space in the box. Unfortunately there's a defender there and that allowed the burn keeper to get a good save. Should have been 7. |
Stathis
said:
|
... King VOGRA, i'd stick with Guzan for the final, it would be unfair to replace him since he took us all this way and besides, he's good enough. |
Eoin Greene
said:

... I can see it now - Sidwell on in the 89th minute for Heskey. Change to a 5 an midfield and defend the three goal lead. And for gods sake will they start running the clock down in the corner... |

Chris Paine
said:

... I don't care what the circumstances are - but how can Blackburn EVER be allowed to score four goals at Villa Park? Even if we go through I won't consider this a strong performance. If we let four go in the final (should we even get there...) then we'll get pounded by one of the Manchesters. |
Alex Glynn
said:
|
... Villa's defense hasn't been great this game but we have scored goals. I know that I'd prefer to score and let some in at the same time, but not let in four against blackburn. PErhaps Guzan is not ready for the final. Sub him on if it looks like it's going to go to penaltys. Downing off for Sidwell, good call eoin but wrong sub off. |

... guzan can not play in the final! im sorry. i know hes made a few good penalty saves but in the final we need experience and composure! |

...For God sakes put in the young guns! When we're capable of conceding like that? No chance, it'd be madness imo. |

... i must sat guzan has not had a good game at all, but i say stick with him, everyone has a bad day and i still mainyain he is better than big brad another goal in us yet i predict UTV |

... 6-4 would be nice. Ashley gwets the ball, so we lose it. But Blackburn errors lead us to a corner. Milner Carling Cup MOTM, I agree. As usual. |

... well we are through! bizarre game!!! Guzan looks utterly dreadful - he def cant start the final after that and quite frankly looks way out of his depth! |

... One issue is that it's hard to see where the breakdown comes in terms of our defending. Blackburn can be proud with how they've played today - I think it should give 'em hope for the rest of the prem season. My palms are sweating! Let's get another! |

... Were Friedel playing I think it'd be no more than 5-2 but he isn't and we'll still win so I'm not complaining. 4 mins extra time, if we play Man Unt in the final that could end up with 14 mins extra time if Alex gets his way. |

...When we're capable of conceding like that? But maybe we're conceding because the same men are playing game in and game out. |

... A few good penalty saves or not, it's his job after all. No room for sentiment here, we want a trophy and Mon has to play the best team to achieve it. Big Brad all day long. |

... Nice singing from Villa fans. Que Sera ser. Commentator says seconds on the clock but his means 2 minutes. So many goals that he can't count. VP MOTM is also milner. Youg takes ball down the side channel, using his pace, and with no defenders able to get back in time he DOESN'T try anything clever, just slots it in. 6-4. Like I hoped. |

... Ok so they need a new backup goalkeeper. That was a discgraceful performance out of Guzan. He will not be the team USA Goalkeeper, thankfully. At least the offense erupted for a 6 pack of goals though!!!! Friedel will start the final, Id wager - and it will be against Man City I think. |

... This club needs some silverware BADLY, I dont care if its the Carling Cup or what. They need to win trophies to attract better players in the transfer window anyways. |

... I wasn't expecting this, I'm glad Villa didn't give up and came back at them. Guzan had an absolute howler and I hope he gets back on form as he's been excellent throughout this competition. Scenes after the match are amazing, it's clear what a trip to Wembley means to the fans and the club. |

... Speechless...shocked...delighted! That was one of the most bizarre games I've ever seen. Truly crazy. And the cheek of Sam Allardyce to come out and moan about the decisions, I mean, come on, how short is his memory? We're off to Wembley, but I truly hope we don't even get near what we did in the first half hour of tonights game. Shocking it was. At least we put our recent poor goalscoring run to bed |
