Aston Villa v Cardiff: Live text updates, team news and links

Morning all and some news to start with; it looks like Harewood is off to Newcastle. Nothing is confirmed, but it just looks like it will be happening and if it does, it will initially be a loan deal for three months. It will be good for the player and if it does happen, I for one hope he does well.

But, to the Carling Cup and we are playing tonight, so this post will be the place where a few things will be getting dropped today under specific headings but if you have any links you think might be interesting, also drop them in the comments box below and if they are worth it, we will add them to the user links section that you will see below as and when we get the first one.

I don't think this game is on TV anywhere but there is every chance we will get a few links later but you will be able to get Jack Walker on AVTV and there will be local radio coverage, but before that, the manger.

The Manager on Cardiff City in the Carling Cup

Martin O'Neill, from the club site
We desperately want to win the game and we will go strongly. We will make some changes to the side but the players who are coming in are not peripheral players - they are quality ones in our squad who have played a big part in getting results in the not-too-distant past. They will feel a bit unlucky not to be in the side at the moment actually.

We just want to make some progress. We are out of Europe so we really want to concentrate on everything domestically. This competition is upon us and we will go and give it everything we've got.

Team News

This is coming as we get it, but as the manager has suggested there will be changes and with Heskey and Young unlikely, don't be surprised to see Milner on the left and Albrighton come in (can't find confirmation that he has joined Forest on loan), Beye to come in and quite possibly Reo-Coker in the middle.

The Players

Guzan, Beye, Cuellar, Collins, Shorey, Milner, Delph, Petrov, Gardner, Agbonlahor and Carew

Subs: Sidwell, Dunne, Friedel, Clark, Albrighton, Delfouneso and Warnock

Live Updates

There will be updates via Twitter and the forum and I suspect below. The forum will probably be easier to follow, but both are welcome.

Morning Damian

Looking forward to going to the game tonight. Even though its not the first 11 that will play, you can still expect a strong 2 string with the squad we have now. How long has it been since we could feel this way?!? Happy days! smilies/grin.gif

the team put out tonight should be strong enough for Cardiff. No disrespect but they just should be.
However, Dave Jones is no mug .. he'll know what they have to do ..

Matt E,

Agree with you but would like to see Gardner get a go in a 4-5-1 with Carew up top on his own. And my preference would be to have Cuellar and Dunne, as I think they would be the best partnership long term in the league (although Collins has started well, I always though he would be fighting with Davies for the 3rd/4th CB slot).

Unfortunately I see yet another disappointing crowd figure tonight a la QPR last season, 26,000 of which 10,000 were QPR fans!

I dont know what it is with fans, we lose no one goes, we draw no one goes, we win no one goes, we are on a winning streak and play a team that we will beat no one goes. Yet when we play badly every man and their dog has an opinion that they have derived from sitting in their comfy armchair while watching match of the day on a saturday night.

Some people say ticket prices well i dont know of another club that does as much as Villa with its tickets prices and trying to get the fans down the ground. I dont know how but it seems that we have a larger glory hunting fan following that what we imagine.

Tonight i expect lots of changes and a good performance, the lads that did so well in the peace cup will get their chance and i expect us to play very well. I can see a nice scoreline 3 maybe 4, as soon as we get our first they will crumble. However I do reckon their fans will out sing ours they have about 3500 going

Wasn't Collins struggling towards the end of the Pompy game? Anyway, he has been injury prone in the past, so maybe best to rest him for Saturday? I would go with....Guzan, Beye, Cueller, Dunne (Captain) Shorey, Albrighton, Gardner, NRC, Delph, Bannan, Carew. Subs - Fridel, Warnock, Collins, Milner, Sidwell, Petrov, The Fonz.

I fancy Collins and Clarke at the back tonight.

I used my complimentary ticket on sat against pompey.

Bit disappointed they wouldn't let me sit in the Holte end, they said you have to sit in the Doug Ellis lower.

Must admit, the north stand do their best at singing, I was joining in with a couple others in the D E lower but all in all no one really cares about signing there and its only half the north stand,

these people don't realise how it can lift the team, look at Anfield, Old trafford etc, we are awesome away from home so why don't people raise the roof when were at VP??

Suppose people just kind of expect us to win now or get something out of the games play.

No, the opposite is true.
The Villa doesn't have ANY glory hunting fans, because The Villa hasn't had any glory for years.
The Villa doesn't even make any exciting signings to wet the glory-hunting appetite

When The Villa has some glory in the here and now, we will attract glory-hunting fans who will go to the matches.
And a good thing too it will be.

Pancho, the same has happened at Liverpool though, and the locals who want season tickets can't get them as all the "day trippers" get tickets for one off games, so they spend money in the club shop. You can see them at Liverpool games with their mobiles out, filming the fans singing YNWA. Is that what we want at Villa? Glory, yes, Glory hunters, no.

The support at away games is immense the noise the away fans make is great but then its a group of like minded fans in small minority where as at Villa Park they are all dispersed around the ground so we cant seem to be able to get some proper noise going, in the Holte end by the time the upper holte have started singing and it has got to the lower holte they stop singing so only half of the holte is making any noise at any one time it drives me mad i loved it when it was standing that was proper singing. It would only take the upper holte to carry the song on for another verse by then the lower holt would have cottoned on and visa a versa

I like Gardner for his work rate and he's always liekly to hit a 20 yarder but for me he has come of age at the wrong time and will never have the natural ability to grace our first team on a regular basis.

Sadly I can see him going the same way as Whittingham, it will be interesting to compare the two tonight to see if they are the same level, personally think Whittingham would still make a decent premier league player somewhere like Hull / Stoke.

Looks liek he's already spoken about it..

Cardiff City winger Peter Whittingham is aiming for Carling Cup revenge tonight against his former Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill.

Whittingham was one of the first to be shown the door by Martin O'Neill when he took over in August 2006.

Former England Under-21 star Whittingham said: "I played under David O'Leary then things changed.

"With a new boss it can go one of two ways. Unfortunately for me, it went the bad way. Martin O'Neill played me a few times, didn't rate me and got rid of me. But it worked out as I'm happy at Cardiff."

Deano-avfc,

Could I just ask, did you need to show your ticket stub from the Rapid Vienna game at the turnstiles or anything? I'm planning on going to the Bolton game in November but can't find my ticket from the game. When they initially introduced the idea and offered us free entry into a Europa League group game, it said that you'd need to show your ticket stub.

I got the impression that the NRC thing is far from over and i wouldn't be too sure if he has a long term future at VP. Pity as he was doing a very effective job in there. I hope MON can learn to let this go. He needs to be the bigger man and see we have nobody else who can do his job and forgive him.

Don't worry about Reo-Coker, he has probably just got a back problem or an infected toe nail, like John Carew gets on a regular basis....

Behind the scenes at Villa park is more confidential than the FBI. Wheres Mulder and Scully when you need them.

Maybe someone at the club should just be honest for a change and tell us the truth instead of feeding us garbage. Our team will only suffer if this continues to drag on.

ak_27 -- unfortunatly i think Reo-Coker will be gone in January, over the web MON has been saying there is to much player power and he wouldnt say everyone in the dressing room is behind, so i think its got MON as much as it has Coker, he says it wouldnt have happened in his day. I think MON will stamp his authority down and ship Reo - Coker out probably to Spurs, hopefully with keane coming this way, I am behind MON on this Reo-Coker knows his place which is player MON is the manager and what he says goes so Reo obviously thrown his toys out but MON aint having it and i dont blame him or before you know it Carew will have Guzan, Albrighton and Clark at legs 11 and it will be going tits. its a shame but i think Reo has shot himself in the foot

Scimeca is in the team and he hasn't started in over a year and they're not playing their first choice CB pairing. Check out Cardiff newsnow for the latest, but it was all over the place yesterday.

Chiefy, they are gradually picking up points and suddenly look like they can score goals again. It's gonna be a blood and thunder game I reckon. Roberts, Diouf etc. We'll need to be winning the ball in midfield and have our wits about us at the back.

I posted it on yesterdays thread but did many see MON's interview on SSN yesterday? I got the impression that the NRC thing is far from over and i wouldn't be too sure if he has a long term future at VP. Pity as he was doing a very effective job in there. I hope MON can learn to let this go. He needs to be the bigger man and see we have nobody else who can do his job and forgive him.

I think most of us wish it had never happened, but it did, and I don't see this being the sort of thing MON is going to let go of easily. He did say the matter was closed, but that could mean anything. NRC challenged MON and his authority in front of the entire team. I'd have been sacked on the spot.

If I were MON, and a player told me to f*ck off, I'd send him packing.

As others have said, though, perhaps he's saving NRC for the weekend, and it has in fact been put to rest. Very hard to say. But MON's not the sort to indulge this kind of disrespect, and I support him fully in that.

I think however much we wanted him to play NRC is a going you cant challenge managment in front of the rest of the workforce / in this case team you are meant to have a quiet word but to wrestle with the manager well that say it all.

Still reckon sidwell put NRC up to it

Your reasoning is good but I would add that what Barry did, in releasing a statement to the press criticising MON, was in my view infinitely more disrespectful than losing it in the heat of the moment, and swearing at the boss.

what Barry did was premeditated disrespect and yet MON did not let his own ego get in the way of what was good for the team. MON fined him, banned him for a while, then brought him back into the fold.

In this Coker case, to my knowledge, Reo hasn't even been fined, and the club captain has come out and said Reo is part of the family. Again, nobody said 'good ole Barry' after his press release.

So I think MON has dealt with the issue as he says, and the Cokemobile will be munching on the man city midfield come Monday week, and maybe even crunching on the Cardiff tonight.

Maybe again that's just my wishful thinking, but right now, in this team, we need the Coker. Let us not be totally fooled just yet by clean sheets against relegation fodder. There are much bigger tests just around the corner.

You little rascal. Can you not see that he is actually quite decent? Why pick on him when there are players who have been playing worse i.e the way Sidwell goes missing or the erratic nature of Beye's positioning, or Carew's anonymity against Pompey. Add a few stats and facts to your argument rather than just repeating the 'rubbish' in capital letters. We can all use a keyboard, maybe you should learn to use a thing called reason.

JPA - I can't be arsed with stats but i have been watching this bloke since the London press gave him 9/10 every week when he was at West Ham. I watched a game he played for the under 21's & had a mare & guess what the Londaon press gave him 9/10 MOTM. I watched him again for West Ham he had a mare & yep 9/10. I thought it must be me but mate he has been awfull for Villa played a handfull of ok games & everyone on here says he was brilliant. Sorry it's an opinion but funny how MON doesn't pick him even though he paid 8.5m for him. Why? Again in my opinion it's because he can't pass, shoot, run with the ball, tackle.
Regarding sidwell i agree, Carew has earned the right to have a bad game he's our best player, Beye is a pub player & isdn't in the team because of that fact & Capital letters is my PC way of SHOUTING...

doesnt it bother you when carew gets the ball holds it up then passes it to a winger, then watches as the winger takes it down the line to cross it into a box where he should have bust a gut to get on the end of it, but the winger looks back to see carew strolling very leisurely.

If we play Chelsea without the Cokemobile, then Lampard, Essien, and Ballack, will rip us to shreds.

The Cokemobile may not be Makalele, but he's the best we got by a long way at disrupting the oposition midfield.

Of course you will cock a deaf'n at any argument in favour of the Coko Crunch, but put your prejudices to one side for a moment and you will see that if we play Petrov and Delph in the middle against decent oposition, we'll get creamed.

Heaven knows it was bad enough against Wigan.

Totally agree mate, Carew drops deep or wide then strolls leisurely towards the general direction of goal, a top striker would give it and then attack the box.

Carew is so frustrating, he can be a match winner but often looks lazy and disinterested.

It's a shame because when he can be bothered to get in the box he looks a real threat.

If we seriously miss NRC a player that can't pass or shoot then something major is wrong. Any proffessional footballer should be able to make a nuisance of themselevs for 90 minutes and be a ballwinner - the difference is most of them would also be capable of passing more than 5 yards after they've won it.

I am personally a fan of Reo-Coker but will admit that during his time here his passing leaves much to be deisred. However, even then I thought he made up for that with his work ethic and winning/leader type mentality as well as his ability to often come out on top in 50/50 challenges. This season it looks to me, from the few games he has played, that he has actually worked hard on his passing because he looked a lot more skilled.

Pancho:

Do see what you're saying. I think the "overlooking" the Barry thing had as much to do with MON's ego in relation to Benitez and Liverpool, and establishing the precedent that Villa weren't going to be bullied into selling as anything else. When City came in, and well under MON's initial valuation, he wasted no time sending Barry on his way. I think he subordinated his ego for 'strategic' reasons.

And, as you say, there are at least 'tactical' if not strategic reasons for letting the NRC thing be buried.

It may also be the case, though, this has been simmering a bit, and if MON and NRC did actually physically come to grips with each other, it's a bit different than going to the press.

I agree, "F*ck off" and going to the papers, it's pretty similar in terms of disrespect. It may have been a different kind of disrespect in MON's eyes, though, ie, thinking a player might be put up to something by an agent vs. having a player explode on you in training, and perhaps, allegedly, having a tussle.

It's a hard one to figure. I do agree that Reo is invaluable in breaking up opposition play, if nothing else, and is a valuable asset for that reason alone.

As to what's really going on, whether it's really behind them both, etc., god only knows.

And, of course, when I say I'd send him packing...well, this, among a number of other very sound reasons, is indicative of why I'm not in charge of a football team. He'd have to put on a tutu, bring me roses, and apologize to me in front of the entire team to keep me from having his locker cleaned out. But I'm old school.

Sounds to me like we're good going forward but dodgy at the back.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if Gabby's recent return to form, after last years loss of confidence and pressure from some fans, isn't due in some small way to the experience and guidance that he's been able to glean from Heskey.

Completely absurd, yet strangely touching.

Engaging reductio ad absurdum to this proposition, we could say that the tuition from Heskey from January on is what brought about Agbonlahor's complete loss of form last season.

JPA, Your piece earlier today - very worthy, very earnest. One thousand, one hundred and sixty words. Your faith in the stamina of the bloggers here is commendable but, I fear, unfounded. The average football fan, including me, has about the same attention span as a roof tile. On a good day.

Don't be upset with me; I encouraged you to do this which demonstrates my belief in your ability. Damian continues to indulge you - as he does me - and this is good because a writer needs a platform. Less is more. This is true in all artistic endeavours.

So, a below par performance from the Villa, but at the end of the day (night) a win is a win and we're in the draw for the next round.

6 wins on the trot now. Does anyone know that last time Villa won 6 in a row?

Sounds like gardener had a fairly good game and was unlucky to get subbed. Hopefully a few more of the fringe players will impress in the next round and I won't have to bite my nails in injury time when the opposition has a goal disallowed.

UTV!!
