Aston Villa v Rapid Vienna Live: Match banter, team news and a song for Jimmy McHagen

Right lads, we have only a few hours until kick off, my new server is up and it is just getting locked down before we move the site. It won't happen tonight, so if things do go underpants, then please forgive me, it's not my fault the traffic is getting like it is. Blame the club!

Right, before we get started with the team news and everything else, as you will see laid out in the headings below, we need a special song for tonight, so if you are reading this and you are about to leave for the ground, why not sing for Jimmy McHagen.

Martin O'Neill made a comment about the game recently and well, if he thinks that is how it works, maybe we should give him a little song, just to show that we hear what he is saying, but it's rubbish. I personally found it a bit condescending and didn't expect it from him, but it is now forgotten and I'll not be bringing it up again, unless he does.

The idea for the song was sent in by Thomas, I won't put his last name here, but don't blame me, I just thought it funny.

So, to the match. It is an important one but I just beat Rapid Vienna playing FIFA 09 3-0 so I don't see this as an issue and I had two players sent off. If O'Neill can't beat them with a full team and the roar of The Holte, then he clearly doesn't know what he is doing. That was a joke people.

Seriously though, it is going to be tough. In my preview of the match I said that I expect Rapid Vienna to come looking for a goal and they'll do it one of two ways. They'll either come out and fight from the off, which is likely, before settling down with a five man midfield and look for something on the counter attack.

They can't come and sit back and wait the whole 90 minutes as it will be too risky, but I do expect them to plan when they move forward and it will be interesting to watch. It will be more interesting to see how we line up after a very successful trip to Anfield on Monday night, but we will know soon enough.

Team News

Coming as we get it, but I really don't think O'Neill will change from Monday night. I think we might see John Carew on the bench and we might even see him coming on with 30 minutes to go or even very early in to the second half if he is needed, but you would have to be a brave man to change a team that went to Anfield and scored three goals.

Guzan, Beye, Cuellar, Davies, Shorey, Milner, Petrov, Delph, Ashley Young, Heskey, Carew.

Subs: Friedel, Sidwell, Agbonlahor, Albrighton, Reo-Coker, Gardner, Lowry.

I gotta tell you, I'm surprised. He got it right the other night against Liverpool and he has changed it all around. He is a brave man.

TV and Streams

the match is on TV if you are in the UK, if not, I have a feeling you'll find some links below fairly soon. The site I use every now and then when stuck in front of my computer at a train station or pub, basically not at home, has changed and while you can still find it at the old site, the new one is here.

The Manager Has Spoken

Martin O'Neill
The result in the week has given us a big boost. We are going into this game with plenty of confidence and we are going to try and overturn this deficit. That's at the forefront of our minds. We will have to make a determined effort to get through. It won't be easy but we'll be going all guns blazing to do it.

Played PES from PES2 to PES7, gave up after the last one though when they released a game with Berbatov playing for Spurs when he'd already signed for Utd. Shocking.
Hopefully Konami will get their act together this year and I'll be able to buy it again.

I've just seen the starting line up for the game tonight, it's basically the same team that played against Wigan except Carew is in for Gabby.

Whilst I know we need at least 1 goal in 90 minutes I would of preferred us to start with the team that played against Liverpool keep the momentum going and then see what the score is at HT.

I just hope we don't concede early....

I don't really think playing 4-5-1 is likely to see us score any more goals. After all, all 3 goals against Liverpool came from set pieces and not open play.

I do fancy 4-4-2 to allow us to attack well, but Heskey playing is not going to get us anywhere.

Statistically speaking we now have to have a shot on goal every 10 minutes to score the two we need to get through at the same time, hope that they don't score.

Have we had one yet?

NRG - on that earlier point - I do agree that the ball on the floor would have been ideal - but I still think that a decent goalscorer can adapt and adjust...I think he had time to head it that's all

and yes Heskey is completely useless, how can he play so well for England against top international sides and when he plays for us he is quite literally nonexistent.

1. why 4-4-2
2. young missing penalty
3. petrov loses ball doesn't track back rapid score
4. shorey puts a great ball in on the 80 min 2-3 feet from heskey. heskey doesn't move a muscel. i've seen builders sand move quicker than him. get rid.

After our second goal, they started to batter us in midfield - the game was cryin out for Reo Coker!

Delph looked shattered - Heskey is a donkey - Reo Coker would have shored that midfield up!

MON is a useless tactician!

MoN wat a complete tosser, i dont no another manager who would of played both heskey and carew in the same team!!!!

why did he play 4 in midfield for the whole game when it was clear we was gettin passed all over the park in midfield. hes umbelievably stubborn, he really needs to watch the actual game nt the 1 he thinks is being played in his head.

if i was dunne i wudnt wanna come to villa nw, he might aswell stay at city and probz get payed more.

i bet warnock is gutted!!!

Please...don't over-react. It was an odd game. Villa were dominating, and started coasting. Those saying Vienna could've scored 4, Villa could've as well, perhaps 5.

Lose a game, win a game, 2-2 on aggregate, out on away goal.

I'm not pleased, but it was just a funny game, a funny tie.

what a f****** shame. losing to a team from Austria. every Bundesliga team from my home country Germany would have beaten them. and why did MON changed the team and also the formation. it's so early in the saison, everyone should be that fit to play 2 matches in one week. we also played with 10 men, because i didn't noticed that heskey was on until he was substituted. sorry but thats just an extremely bad joke. and why did he brought in Albrighton in such a situation. this must have felt like a punch in the stomach for players like Sidwell and Reo Coker. sorry, but tonight everyone will have a laugh about Villa. smilies/angry.gif

Ah, really disappointing. But I'm not going to slag anyone off. We played some good football and there's no guarantee that any other personnel/formation would have done any better - we did win the game after all. It was the first leg that was the bigger problem.

So we're down to 3 comps now. Let's win one of them.

Result sucks but I totally agree with Vital_Loans. This probably is the best thing that could have happened to us this year. We don't have the squad to compete in Europe at the moment and now we can focus on the league and hopefully a solid cup run. Get the players we need in before the window closes, hopefully strengthen again in January and god willing be ready for champions league next year. UTV

maybe then he’ll go figure you can’t play 442 with two big blokes up top and no creative midfielder.
agree with those who say at 2-0 up you bring on Reo to tighten it up and stop them passing through us.
Very disappointing. Oh for a sniejder & defoe or the likes.

I'm not at all happy with that - why are we bothering even trying to finish as far up the table as we can if we just bow out like that - NRC should have been bought on when we were struggling and things should have been changed round. Heskey was a terrible purchase it's not his fault but we're a far better side without him why is it MON can't see that

Played quite well. Why is everyone forgetting that Rapid a) beat Liverpool pre season and B) are mid way through their season so are a settled side. Chill out I'm not to bothered it's like 20 games to win the thing. I would much rather a better league run. People are forgetting that City are a threat this year without the added games. The FA is a much better option as it is played on Saturdays. I said on 606 ages ago that we should sack this thing off early, it's just too many games.

Tactically, I can agree, Heskey obviously didn't seem the best choice...I would've brought Heskey off at 2-0, and put NRC in.

But, that being said, if Milner hadn't missed a sitter, the game was over. And I'm a big Milner fan.

@ gubbel: Yes, I am sure any team from your beloved German Bundesliga would have beaten Rapid. And anyone else. You do realise that first of all upsets do happen in football? And maybe after taking off your blindfold you might also happen to realise that Bundesliga teams have lost to lesser teams than tonight's Rapid squad.

Admittedly I have only seen a part of the game tonight (and some of the summary) but I seriously doubt that you believe any Bundesliga team is better than Rapid (and thus Aston Villa).

Stevo,

He played 4-4-2 so we had an improved chance of scoring goals, which we did. We have superior players to Merson such as Ash and Jimmy.

Whingers on here would still not be satisfied even if we'd won 23-0. None of you have the level of expertise and footballing know how of MON otherwise you'd be in his seat. 4-5-1. Bollox! MON had the right idea and it nearly paid off.

A brilliant game? We showed no desire once we were 2-0 up. They were more up for it than us and wanted it more... players and fans. 442 didn't work, it generally doesn't work for us at home and Heskey is a waste of space.

Going out of any competition is a bad thing. We need to be winning trophies. At the end of the day, that's what the manager and players are judged on.

they have every right to boo the result, MON showed yet again he is tactically inept..why change a winning side? this is a HUGE loss for us that will cost a few Million in revenue, also a chance for another 6 games in Europe, as i said last night i want MON out of this club, he has no clue what he's doing, I'm not fickle, i'm just stating MY OPINION, just like you've got yours.
