It really couldn't have gone better for us yesterday. Okay, maybe it could have, maybe Pompey would have beaten Blues and Stoke could have got a very very late winner, but at the beginning of yesterday, it could have gone a lot worse than it actually did.

It is still mathematically possible that we go fourth today and while the chances of that happening are about as good as me not having a beer this afternoon, stranger things have happened, although not very often.

So, today is about doing a job. I'd love to see some passing football and I'd love to see Milner put in another performance which will have Fabio Capello thinking about leaving Gareth Barry in England next summer, but if at the end of the day we have seen one of the worst games of football this season and score through a freak own goal in the 93rd minute, I'll take it.

You see, it is all about the points. Yes, the football is important, but we also have to sort of accept that we need to spend a lot more money on quite a few more players before that happens and that with O'Neill, we know we will always get 100% from every single player and if a player isn't giving it, he has one or two on the bench that will.

So, this is the match post. We will drop a few links later, we will add team news as and when we have it and at the end of the day, we will have some nice statistics for you from the match, which even though we are going to start putting them down after every league game, they don't matter today - all that matters is three points, everything else would just be a bonus.

MARTIN O'Neill has refused to rule out splashing some cash this month – even though it’s not part of Aston Villa’s current budget.

Last month the Villa boss was adamant the only way he could boost his high-fl iers during the mid-season window was if some fringe players left.

But with his side just 90 minutes from the Carling Cup Final, and very much in the race for a top-four finish, O’Neill admits he would love to get active in the market.

That subject is certain to be on the agenda this week when owner Randy Lerner jets back after a lengthy spell at home in the States.

O’Neill said: “I understand about the need for prudence – and I believe in it. But I am a football manager. I get judged on results and not on the long term. Every single club I’ve been at, I have worked to the budgets given to me. That’s at Wycombe, Leicester and at Celtic, so I haven’t changed here."

“I’m very happy with my squad but I’m no different to anybody – I’d like it to be stronger.” Despite those comments, O’Neill insists he will never risk bankrupting a club in the search for immediate glory and success.

That’s why Villa, even though they have spent more than £100million in Lerner’s three-and-a half-year reign, remain in a healthy position on and off the pitch. Which is in stark contrast to the dire financial state many of their Premier League counterparts find themselves in.

Not least today’s opponents West Ham, seemingly on the brink of going bust for the best part of 12 months.

According to O’Neill, trouble in the boardroom inevitably leads to a downturn in form on the field. The Ulsterman added: “If you have a bit of turmoil in the background I have often felt it gives players excuses because something is not right."

“I was once a player myself and you go with any excuse – your shoes are too tight, breakfast was poor, I even blamed John Robertson for not passing to me! Having a stable owner does take one of those excuses away from you.”

With the recent set-up,we play better football.
We will win today and they will not score.

i've not changed my thinking on it how we play football
we need to see the football develop

but today. it is like the carling cup final at the end of february, if we are in it, i wouldn't care how we won as long as we win

today is one of those matches. we need to win against a team struggling because if we don't we haven't taken advantage of the skip ups by three teams around us

renewed hope after yesterdays results. in particular the man city result, city looked poor yesterday.
I think we need a few players,
Id like to see us bring in a forward, (vagner love, or jovetic), a creative cm (stephen ireland) and then a new winger (n-zogbia) who we were linked with last year before he went to wigan, and i think we would do a really decent job for us as cover. apparently he was real good against wolves yesterday, but i have seen him before and he has got a bit of quality.
Then in the summer bring in kuyt and providing we dot lose any player we would be well set for the champs league also.
We all have dreams

I agree we need players but N'Zogbia has the wrong attitude and i would hate to see Kuyt at VP. We need to improve the 1st team and not be looking at average squad players. We need someone that will replace either heskey / Carew up front (maybe Jones) and a creative player to push Petrov for his place. Then I would be looking top 4

Possible quote a few years from now:

"I was a football manager once, you go with any excuse, your squad size is too small, your chairman is too frugal, I even blamed the fans once for not backing me, having a spendthrift chairman does take one of those excuses away from you"

Sorry to bring up the obvious again, but we just arn't scoring enough goals, simple as that.

O'Neill will have to gamble on bringing in a new strike partner for Gabby as Carew & especially Heskey are just not doin' enough IMO.

If we can't put 2 or more past West Ham then we are just gonna be outscored in our quest for a top 5 or 6 finish.

I'm pinning hopes on Jimmy Milner getting 15 or so this season, our Gerrard/Lampard!

N-zogbia is a little bit of a left-field shout i admit, but i think he offers something, and would work as decent cover for left mid and left back, (doesnt look like we will ever see bouma or shorey again). Kuyt may not get rave reviews, but he is consistnat, works hard, has campions league experience, and how often does he score crucial goals for liverpool. If we do get 4th he would be a great player to bring in, im not suggesting he is a first 11 player but he would do a job.
Anyway its all pie in the sky, what we really need at the moment is a link forward, because we have no skill up front at all, we desperaly need the quality up front just behind gabby, then we would have a top class first 11.

Carling Cup is on 28 Feb (Sun), so all being well that will be a great weekend and a trip to London village.

Been speaking to a West Ham mate today, think I will change my prediction from 2-0 to 5-0, full of confidence on this one, Zola is struggling to pick a team with a lot of 50/50 injuries (Parker, Noble, Ilunga).

Good website for those who haven't seen it before: http://www.physioroom.com/news..._table.php

And a win today takes us 4 pts ahead of this time last year Damian

I said yesterday that Petrov needs to pass the ball forward more often and I believe that if he does we will get more out of Heskey and be more attractive to watch.

One of the reasons why Heskey is such a good link up player for England is that he receives the ball to feet and a ball that is usually played through the midfield whereas Villa play a lot more down the wings or they play it across the back and then hump the ball forward.

At the end of the day though as long as we gat the 3 points I'll take it.

It's only halftime in the game we have a slender lead and although Blackburn are poor they are going to throw the kitchen sink at us. This 90 mins is there season now. No matter how much Mon tries to keep our lads grounded Wembley is going to be in their heads. I am worried because we are perfectly set up for a mighty fall.

Please people leave Wembley talk until we get there.

I had a look a few weeks back at cup final ticket prices, over 300 quid which seems just ridiculous.

Seriuosly this is why my doubts about MON still linger. Tactically he showing his weakness yet again here.

How the f**k can he not see how bad Cullar is at rb and how much it destroys the balance of the team. They have no stikers today so wjhy the hell are we playing a CB at RB. It will be up to us to take the game to them.

Just keep count at how many times he punts it long for no reason and also how many times he kicks out of play. I bet he puts it over the sideline more then 12 times in the game.

His ball retention is brutal in that position. Good tackler but really poor on the ball and at rb you get lots of possession as you are usually the free man. Just keep an eye out for how many times he will just hoof it and kick it straight out of play during the game.

Really really poor decision by MON. Ball retention and team balance againest West Ham today will be vital.

I disagree Damian.
There's nowhere near enough pace in the game, for me.
And if we don't seriously step it up, we're playing into West Hams hands.
I can't believe that I'm already contemplating the possibility of a draw against this side.

Really? I think we need Carew in the box asap.

Yeah I think Emile was doing well linking play, but the service into him and Gabby has been gash.
We need to up the tempo and I'd like to see the Fonz come on to see if he can play alongside Gabby and maybe be the fox in the box we're looking for.
Having said that, with West Ham's packed midfield, there seems to be no one that can unlock the defence with a key pass.

Hopefully the second half will be better and the crowd need to play their part too! As Viva said, it's deathly quiet in VP.

Why does little Ash take the majority of the corners, Downing got to take one and it was the best delivery of the day and Collins got a clear header from it.

Downing should take all corners and free kicks second half. Little Ash would probably sulk though, really beginning to dislike him.

We are Villa therefore we won't take that chance, come on surely we're all used to this by now... smilies/wink.gif

Whoever that guy is playing up top for them (I can't make him out on my dodgy stream) looks a cracking player.

Personaly i'd get Delph on ASAP and try to play it through the middle some more and Ash and DJ Downing are lacking today.

ANYbody. It isn't complicated logic - no player who has been on pitch for 90 minutes has been able to do anything to win us the game, so give somebody a chance on the bench to show they can do it.

Dross.
If it was a one off or rare that the same frustrating things happened, then fair enough, but
Young:Crossing totally ineffective...plan B? - None!
Heskey:Offered nothing at all...answer...Replace him like for like with another lazy ineffective player.
Milner works like a dog, trying to do everything for everyone, his midfield partner Petrov is totally out of his depth at this level, creates so very little.
I'm shocked that we didn't lose just to rub it in a bit ala Liverpool.
Please lets have a whip round and get a decent striker!!!

Totally, Gabby is fantastic IMO. He doesn't stop working, creates tons of space and can beat anyone in the league in a foot race, justified he needs to improve his shooting but he is a work in progress with a cracking foundation to build on. Put him next to someone with a killer instinct and he will flourish.

Lets not jump on this pathetic get Gabby out band wagon that was kicking up towards the end of last season. Take him out of the team and we would be far worser for it.

He brought on players that would stay more advanced and because of this they were no longer pinned in as they had more options p front. The game changed when he did this. MON just doesn't haveit to be able spot thing like this during games. Im sorry but its a major weakness in the man. Thats why i laugh when he meantioned at taking over a top 4 club. He would get mauled in the CL. Tactically he is a retard. All day long today it was plan a plan a plan a. No matter how easy they dealt with it we had noting else to offer.

And Young was poor today, big time

Young was his usual today. Ive said it all season. He is the most over rated footballer in the PL. I would sell him this summer if any top team were stupid enough to be interested.
