Match day: Blackburn v Aston Villa with banter, links, team news and video

They say you shouldn't mix the grape and the grain. I did last night and now I know why they say don't eve for the love of God, mix the grape with the grain. That is my excuse for this post coming in a little late this morning.

Anyway, we have a match, Marlon Harewood has officially joined Newcastle on loan, Nigel Reo-Coker is back in the squad and we are going to pick up three points today. It's a good day all round.

This is also going to be the one and only post of the day so we are going to be dropping some links, informing you of where you can watch the game online, bringing you some team news and generally taking it easy with some light hearted banter.

Nigel Reo-Coker

This is a good bit of news. He is back in the squad for today and I suspect he will be starting alongside Petrov and Delph in the middle. Many thought his place in the squad was gone after the falling out with O'Neill but O'Neill isn't going to lie to us. On Monday morning it was put to bed and now, Reo-Coker is back in the fold.

He'll play an important role today, but if he looks lazy and not interested, then that will tell us something else.

Video

I've found this video of the match from last season I think where we won 3-2 at Villa Park . You'll see a goal from Stephen Warnock. Hopefully he'll do one of those today too.

Team News

Friedel, Cuellar, Dunne, Collins, Warnock, Milner, Delph, Petrov, Ashley Young, Carew, Agbonlahor.

Subs: Guzan, Delfouneso, Heskey, Reo-Coker, Shorey, Beye, Gardner.

Watching Online

This is also coming as soon as we get it or find it in the comments.

Nice one Damian. It's only 5/4 with Hills so that's a good bet. I have an old Paddy Power account, I'll try and remember my login etc and have a cheeky tenner on it.

Grape and grain not good, I had grape and stricly come dancing. You win, I need to man up!!

Cant see Delph starting if NRC is back, Sidwell will get the nod from MON in a 5 man midfield. at least if NRC or Sidders not at the races we have Delph to come in. 2-1 Villa Gabby and Carew

Sidders is out! Either Delph or Gardener will probably start in a 5 man midfield, which is probably best for most away games.

We are due a great performance and someone will will give someone a real hiding soon, but not today for me, away win the Villa (1-2)

This is not helpful, get behind the players, whoever they are, it's all about Villa not individuals. Yes he is yet to find his feet but Steve Bruce, Cappello, MON, Houllier, Keegan, Sven can all be wrong.

There really is too much competition, and too little games for him to shine. Especially now that Gabbys on fire and we are out of the Europa!

One for the stats lovers, Curtis Davies look away now..

Aston Villa travel to Ewood Park without Curtis Davies, missing with a dislocated shoulder.

The former West Brom defender has played 34 of Villa's 43 matches since the start of last season and whilst the Villans results have been fairly similar with and without him, their defence has been tighter when he hasn't played, conceding 1.21 goals per game with him and 1.11 without.

As a result Villa have had fewer than three goals in six of the nine matches Davies has missed including four of the last five away from Villa Park. -2.5 goals can be backed at 1.86.

This is a really bold team selection.
MON must think we've got the sound beating of ~Blackburn to go with this away from home.

Does MON know what he's doing ?
I sure hope we don't have another Wigan coming up.

And I think Gardner and Shorey need to move on and play for a team like, well, Blackburn

I'm glad Delph is getting a chance in CM.

Personally I would have liked 4-5-1 with Carew on the bench but I can see us scoring 2 or 3 today, I don't think Blackburn will score so I'm going for 2.0

Delph needs a chance, he's going to be a regular soon for us in CM and can certainly score goals too and gets stuck in.

I really don't see anything between Gardner and Sidwell(in fact Gardner probably has a better goal threat). I feel sorry fo him as he hasn't been given a proper chance in the centre the way Sidwell has. I just hope today Delph can really stake a claim to a starting spot.

Im a bit shocked that NRC isn't playing. I wonder would MON have picked this team if they hadn't had their row and hopefully he isn'tputting 3 points on the line by making a point to NRC. We should really have too much for Blackburn but i still have my doubts that we can dominate teams like this.

First goal is vital here and if we get it i can't see Blackburn getting anything.

NRC is definitely gone imo.
But perhaps MON is just rubbing his nose in it and confirming that he decides when players play and that bitching doesn't work.

I agree this is risky. Be interesting to see how Delph copes.

I guess MON is really going for it.

He obviously doesn't think they've got enough to pose a threat to our new-look defence, or a good enough centre midfield to overrun Petrov and the inexperienced Delph.

MON must see Delph as key to a top 4 finish and wants to get him playing as soon as possible.

BUT WHY LEAVE REO OUT ?

Does MON truly believe this midfield will be enough to stop City & Chelsea ?

Sorry lads - doing three things today and trying to watch ..

4442 is okay - but what are blackburn playing?

my opinion is we we might not have been able to stop their goal but we might have done better playing 4541 - sort of pointless at the moment htough unless we lose

Reo-Coker isn't going to be some magical fix for us. I fail to see how the game would have gone any differently had he started instead of Delph.

In my opinion, 4-4-2 and Reo-Coker just don't mix. Unless he's in a 5-man midfield, he's left with far to much to do and can't cope with it.

We lost the possession battle to a ten man (for 26 min) hacky Allardyce team.

Midfield is where we lost it. Bringing Heskey on for Delph is when we lost it.

Everyone here knows the game was crying out for Reo so why didn't MON bring him on? To make some feeble point? Hard to imagine the manager is more authoritative after osing a completely winnable game

We had a great chance for our best start in 87 years - but I think all and sundry here know we have been somewhat lucky and we do not play possession football.

We lost 52% to 48% to a ten man Blackburn for fk sake!

And Dunne - sorry the man may have heart but he is a defensive liability and like I always said he regularly gives away penalties that will cost us many points

There was no reason to raise his hand there and Clatenberg was spot on to give the penalty

I'm incredibly disappointed and it doesn't bode well going into critical games against ManC and Chelsea

MON needs to get over his "contretemps" and play Reo

Cuellar and Collins in the middle of defence. Warnock and L.Youn g left and right back

Love Gabby's development on a lighter note

Cue Taglor to resurface & the rest of his tiring hordes.I fear a negative response so, being as I stopped up late (1am) to watch this less than satisfactory display, I'll always support us though times were & will be hard. That's what supporting a team is, no matter what we'll always be there for them!UTV!
I'm off to bed & a snooze, hoping my reality was a dream & my dream visa versa- a Villa win!

You doom merchants have got my permission to spout crap! But you're still on your own because the rest of us sane creatures get the big picture.

Tarra a bit!

We can all go on about having tp play 5 in midfield all day. The reason we have to do that is to make up for all out CM's weaknesses.

But why aren't we asking the question why after being in charge for 4 years that MON still has't got a midfield together that are capable enough to play with only 2 in there like most top teams do? Why can't we pass and keep the ball like all top teams can?

The side today has been weak in so many areas, where we could be strong but because of MON's tactics we have lost. He is the only reason we have lost today, its clear the players have done what was asked of them, lump it forward to carew. Great tactics when they have two massive central defenders.
We were beaten in the centre of midfield badly and our lack of a proper full back on the right has also been shown up today. I think Dunne should be left alone, the game should have been beyond them after 2 mins when we scored but MON decided he knows better than every other 'expert' or manager and persisted with crap tactics and formation and he has lost us 3 points today, with his tactical ineptitude.

Nan,

This glorification of Coker is a far cry from last season when everyman and his dog were claiming he couldn't pass, couldn't tackle and couldn't shoot. Now he is the answer. Hmmm!

I think it's more a case of he's the only one with any tenacity.
Which was what was needed today, imo and what we're so lacking (a gutsy midfielder who can pass).

The defence certainly looked shakier today, but I wouldn't blame Dunne necessarily.

Highly disappointing, as that's 3 points dropped, imo.

AK i agree the are all on XXk a week yet we stuggle week in week out to string passes together. That should be the minimum requirement.
I hate the way we approch the game, if we were really challenging the points do matter but we are just making up the numbers so Entertain the fans ffS

no top teams only play with 2 midfielders. liverpool always play 451 as do arsenal. rooney drops in the middle for man u as does anelka for chelsea. keane drops off for spurs, tevez will for city and cahill/felani does for arsenal. 2 in the middle does not work. MON is probably the only manager in the prem that cant see this, adn it continually costs us points. It cost us a top 4 place last year, and it will cost us a decent league position this year.

i said it before the season started that this will be mons last season not that he will get the sack but that he will walk as come the end of the season i feel the crowd will be very much on his back and as he thinks that he is the dogs wont put up with it hope im wrong but he will never take us to the next level and deep down we all know this i mean if i could chose a manger to take us there it would be mon i was so sure he would deliver greatness but i just think he is dated thats what makes managers like fergie so great is they move with the changing times of the game

Again cannot understand why he is so stubborn about 4-4-2. Why does he do this. Midfield of Delp - Petrov - NRC in the midfield is what we were crying for did he not see this. Anyway lets see what he has to say in the post match interview...

gareth,
i agree he does come across as dated and needs to move with the times very quickly. He has plus points but he continues to think football is played like it was 20 years ago then he fall flat on his face....

ronrabbit a striker coming back into the mid is still a 442. Arsenal, Utd, Chelsea all play with 2 strikers on the pitch. Even Liverpool have Kuyt on the wing but he is a srtiker.

Now i agree that you need that but we don't have that type of striker. I said it many times that we are short a Tuncay, Gudjohnson type striker to come deep as we are really short strikers who are technically good on the floor .

SCOTT1 - yeah that's right a midfielder (Delph) came off for Emule who had barely a touch all day and the one touch he did have he fell over at LB and almost gifted Rovers a goal

The incompetance of Emule is astounding - how MON can fathom playing him on the left wing to make a reductive point kills me

Dont get me started on Dunne - most red cards in premiership history, most penalties conceded - a joke

tactics, formations aside, I think Blackburn looked the hungrier team. They also seemed to match up quite well with us, a very big side and they were just playing harder.

And Villa just looked off today. Surely should've had the draw at least, and I definitely don't agree with bringing Heskey on for Delph.

But, really, we weren't the harder working side.
