This is no ordinary match, this is the quarter final of a competition. We win this and we are in the semi-final, two matches away from a trip to a final, at Wembley. This is a big match. This isn't the last 32, this is the last eight and we are within touching distance.
There is however a few fairly large hurdles to jump first and while we are all happy with Pompey, if we win tonight, there is every likelihood we will face either Manchester United, Chelsea or Arsenal over two legs in the semi-final.
However, we could also face Manchester City, Spurs or Blackburn over two legs, if we win tonight, so rather than worry about that or write ourselves of before we have even left the trap, let's just see what happens. It could turn our that Spurs win at Old Trafford and Harry Redknapp changes his stance from 'concentrating on the league' today, to 'Silverware is very important to a club like Tottenham', if they win and they might, just like we might.
We will be dropping a few links to this page later and we will be updating on a regular basis as we get any team news or or anything else related to the match, but we will start with this one, a link to PaddyPower, because you will get 11.10 for us to win tonight and while it isn't great, you have to fancy we will, unless O'Neill rests a few players to focus on the league.
For now, your predictions below please and I will update this page as soon as we know more.
Team News
Guzan, L Young, Dunne, Cuellar, Warnock; Petrov, Downing, Milner, A Young; Agbonlahor and Heskey
Subs: Friedel, Delfouneso, Delph, Reo-Coker, Beye, Gardner, Clark

We will face Barrys Man City in the final at Wembley, and he will watch and weep as his X-Villa Colleagues climb the famous steps and Collect their winners trophys. Not so worried about Arsenal in this comp - they have bigger fish to fry and although they have great kids coming through If we take it seriously we will hand them a thrashing too. Man U and Spurs only real threats left IMO but lets hope we treat Pompey with a bit of respect tonight and put a good team out, which I'm sure Mon will after the russia issue last year. UTV! |

I didn't realise that they were missing so many players due to being cup tied but they are still a capable team at home mainly through their willingness to pass and keep the ball. They might just enjoy not having the pressure of the relegation battle now hanging over them tonight. I just find it hard to really be confident of this team no matter who we are playing. ... Probable Pompey line up: -----------Begovic----------- Wilson-Kaboul-Ben Haim-Hreidarsson Yebda--Brown--Utaka---Belhadj -------Piquionne--Dindane---- Considering O'Hara, Boateng, Finnan and James are all out this would probably be pompey's strongest line up. While it is potentially dangerous there really is a significant weakness in their midfield without Boateng and O'Hara which we must exploit. The two French lads up front are inconsistent, but both have quality and could be dangerous if we aren't on our game. Their defence is bo no means great and while this will be a really tough away game we have to consider we might smash them to bits. This team were playing well under Hart, but looked devoid of ideas against Man U. We need to play five in midfield and close them down fast all over like in the first half at Spurs. They are nowhere near as good at the back as spurs and I fancy we could be two to the good by half time. The advantage of getting a lead in the first half is that: a) Grant may decide it's not worth it and make a few subs to preserve them dor the weekend b) they have a confidence crisis and their heads may drop c) We can soak it up and hit them on the break although there is no way we should play as deep as we did on sat. |

I love all the positivity here about tonight, I really do, but I'm not so confident, I've been a Villa fan far too long, and these kind of games give me nightmares, we never seem to show up for these kind of games, why, I'll never know. One of MON's biggest strengths apparently is motivation and getting players up for games, well tonight we'll see if he can even do that anymore. Don't take this as negative, I don't know if I've ever recovered from the Doncaster debacle, I really hope we do it tonight because to get to a semi-final would be huge and much needed in MON's 4th term in charge. |

... Portsmouth will go 1-0 up early on. Emile Heskey will equalise late. 1-1 on 90 minutes. Milner will score with a deflected drive in the first half of extra time. 2-1 to Villa aet. I also predict Villa will get 11 men behind the ball and try to play the ball long out of defence into the channels. Just there won't be anyone there. I further predict John Carew will look like he couldn't give a toss, and will head a lot of balls on to, er, nobody. What is more, I predict that whether Sidwell or Reo-Coker plays, they will run around like a headless chicken trying to kick the ball. Sometimes, they will even try to kick it in the general direction of another Villa player. Usually, I predict they'll fail. My biggest prediction is that Gabriel Agbonlahor will, on a number of occasions, run very fast. |

... I always liked Pennant and thought he could have been a decent addition when available and moved to Pompey. He did fairly well there while on loan and at times looked decent at Liverpool. He has a quality delivery and can go past a player and I agree he needs to be played as an out and out winger in the right formaiton with someone to aim at to really be of use. Not sure what we need him for though unless Milner is definitely coming inside and MoN still wants two players vying for the RW position. On the other hand he is a long term unde5r achiever, he's english and has a top four education so he fits the MoN criteria. This means it could just be lazy journalism or a greedy agent. If he is genuinely looking for a crack at the England squad then you can see why he might want a move to Aston. |
Adrian Kilgallon
said:
|
... If Pennant comes then what happens to Albrighton? I think this is just lazy journlism. I hope it is. MON needs to be sorting far more pressing positions out and if he continues down this path of buying wingers and moving other wingers elsewhere we could have a team containing 4 wingers playing at the same time which for me is stupid beyond belief. CM's need to be bred to CM from an early age. You won't compete with top teams by trying to reinvent players in key positions like that. They will not be able to match a quality player who have played that role possible since they were 15 or younger. |

... ak, I do agree to a certain extent, but we have often had conversations about Milner which have resulted in agreeing that maybe he isn't clearly a classic winger and may have the skills to be more effective in a more central role. Of course thsi is hypothetical and we have talked about Young in the same way. If MoN were to move Ashley into a role behind the striker and Milner into a more central midfield role then we would only have Downing and Bannan on the left and Marc on the right in wide positions and an extra right winger might be useful. I would certainly think there would be more chance of Albrighton ousting a player like Pennant than an ever present like Milner and we would retain having two players in every position. Hypothetically this would then allow us to lose one of our uynder performing midfield players for a reasonable fee, i.e Gardner, NRC or Invisidwell and possibly a striker too if Ash is a success further forward i.e Heskey or Carew. It's all speculation and it is probably lazy journalism but there you go. Many wingers over the years have made the move inside later in their careers and done well and imo if you have quality, a good touch, a good engine and can keep the ball and pick a pass then why not. If anything it is harder for players to make the transistion the opposite way and go from CM to the wing as it's a more specialised postion. Three very recent examples I can think of are Beckham at Madrid, Giggs at times in recent years and of course Gareth Barry who was much better in the centre than he ever was on the left wing as he didn't have much pace. Just a thought. |
Adrian Kilgallon
said:

... Its funny as i wrote on the other thread earlier i actually still think Barry was far more influential on the left wing then in the centre. He is not a top CM in my opinion and will be surplus to requirement again this summer. We weren't exactly great last year either in the CM department and had to play an extra man in there to cope. I see Milner as a less gifted version on the ball then barry so i really don't see him making any real impression in what is possibly the most important position on the pitch. Yes he has great determination and work rate but where we want to go we need players with a lot more then that. Villa haven't had a proper CM in far 2 long in my opinion. I think Townsend was the last one but maybe im a little biased. Its time for a proper CM who is complete. Not one who is quick and can tackle but can't pass and not one who is poor in the tackle but can pass well. They are hard to find which is why i still struggle to forgive MON not signing Diarra when he was available. Young would be more of a striker not a CM who could float so i don't think that is the same as being a midfield general. Regarding midfielders becoming wingers i think many teams are doing that. They don't become wingers but rather left/ right sided midfielders. Arsenal play Rosiky, Nasri and Arshavin there and they are not really out and out wingers (Robert Pires before that) . In fact i think the day of playing 2 wingers who hug the line like we do may be gone and that may also be a factor as to why our CM can't cope with very average sides also. It definately doesn't help the possession stats. |

... Interesting idea JPA. I've been wondering myself what it would look like if Milner were to play the part the Sidwell currently plays in the lineup. Looking back as some of Milner's highlights, they seem to often be in the middle or back half of the pitch when he tracked back to make a key tackle. Why not give him a chance to play that more central role as he obviously has the ability to tackle and doesn't seem to get flustered in tight spots. I don't tend to agree with the MON bashing that we often see on this site, but I still can't see him taking a chance with this one. Perhaps when Downing is fully fit he will at least experiment with different players on the wing. |

... The only thing Barry ever had going for him at Villa if you ask me was his ability to pass the ball. Everything else was pretty bog standard. He was dog slow and he didn't have any standout defensive abilities. If Sidwell could pass he'd be a like-for-like replacement for Barry. Barry really wasn't special at all. I'll admit that his passing ability is better than most, but that alone did not make him a top player. The only reason you could argue we miss him now is because none of our other midfielders can play the ball in the same way he did, yet there are better teams than us filled with players who can. |

... ak, I'd say that Milner is very different to Barry and posesses qualities closer to someone like lampard or Scholes (Lampard and Scholes are world class and i'm not comparing) than Barry who has developed into more of holding midfielder. Milner has the pace and presence of mind to break from deep and probably get a few goals. With Petrov holding I fancy James could do a job there until Delph is ready, certainly a better job than Sidwell is doing in there. Delph I think may turn out to be the best of the lot given time. |

... vivavilla Barry on the left wing had a great ability to actually create space for himself. That is a skill in itself. He was great at dropping his shoulder and sending the full back one way and then go the other way. He made up for his lack of pace with this and he is my mind is far better on the ball out there then Young is. He didn't always just cross it in he could vary his delivery and play it short and take it back again. that goal againest Spurs was a perfect example of what he could do out there. If was were in charge i would have bought Diarra and put Barry on the left and Young on the right and also have Petrov. That midfield would be good defensively/ in possession and going forward and would have cost the exact same as Sidwell did. Benitez has since admitted he had Barry earmarked as a left sided midfielder to combine with Torres and not as a CM as many thought he would. |

...The only thing Barry ever had going for him at Villa if you ask me was his ability to pass the ball. I agree.. However, he reads the game pretty well which I think comes from his time as a defender where he played LB and somtimes CB very early in his career. This allows him to position himself well defensively and give himself the best chance of winning the ball in midfield. Also his time as a winger has helped make him aware of the sort of runs wingers make and probably why his service into Young was particularly good. He also plays the game very simply and rather than providing the flair and incisive defence splitting balls of a fabregas or Gerrard he just keeps the ball and plays it to feet. Something we are really missing in the final third at the moment. My criticism was that he often passed backwards and sideways a lot and didn't have the pace to make breaking runs from midfield, but lets not kid ourselves, he's pretty decent. In some ways this is why I think the problems we have with the midfield are relatively minor at the minute and we simply need someone to dictate the rate of play and keep the ball rather than making the silly audacious pass and giving it away. We just need to start doing the basics well again like we did in MoN's second season. |

... Ak et al Milner has been used as an AMC quite a bit, as have Young and indeed Downing. For once I think MONs lack of stones will help us. He has laid out roughly 35 mil on the three of them. So he will not drop them. He has real faith in Gabby, holds Carew in contempt ( based on his discourse during that fourum thing) and has little real faith in Heskey ( although this may be based on our, the collective villa fans, evident disdain for him ) therefore he will play the three in a five man mid. Even if he plays the three in a 442, ie Young as a second striker, it will be a 442/4411/451 (do y'all see how it's the same bloody thing). When Utd play 442 it is a 451 without the ball because of how deep Rooney plays. It is dependent on the workrate and intelegence of the players. Something I'm afraid Carew lacks. So sell him while he is worth a dime, I'm sorry but one breach of club discipline a hero does not make. Does thinking you are the only sane person left make you crazy? |

... I'm usually a rather positive, glass-half-full Villa fan. But, today, I feel rather sour about the upcoming holiday fixtures. We have United away, Sunderland away, Stoke home, Arenal away, and Liverpool home. Yikes. In 4-4-2, our midfied have trouble getting the ball into our strikers. So there is little point to having Carew on Heskey on the pitch. I want to go back to playing 5 in the midfield: -------------Friedel--------------- Cuellar---Collins---Dunne---Warnock --------Petrov-------Delph/Reo-Coker Young---------Milner---------Downing I would go with Delph over Reo-Coker. Delph is the only player on our roster who can provide the composure and flair that we need so desperatey in the middle of the park. It's time to let him sink or swim. The risk is worth the upside, and is preferrable to persisting with an otherwise average midfield. I would also rather have Cuellar playing out of postition so that we can also keep Collins on the pitch. |

... sid im not trying to be a complete downer... but its simple to pick apart mon. he builds up guzan right before a game, a cup game, when we all know we wont see him in league till next season... if that, some of us think he's ready now. the quicker guzan get experience the better for our back line. and last itme i checked. if i wanted to i could come on here and say f**k this and f**k u and f**k f**k f**k. but i look for ways to improve a stagnant villa team. ways u might not see, if u get angry with it, go back to talk sports. |

... r0bb0, I don't know what it is but there's a real difference for me between structured criticism backed up by a bit of thought because we want the team to do better like AK posts and those who just moan constantly like 2 year olds. I know a couple of Villa fans who won't visit this site any more because it's like visiting a cancer ward unless we win 4-0 |

... fastback, I should calm down but it's beyond a joke on here sometimes. A lot of people just jump on the bandwagon and slag the team off when they clearly have got little clue. I don't claim to be a football genius myself but some people should be embaressed And yes I will no doubt end up leaving this site at some point driven away under a cloud of depression, just hope my Prozac will kick in All the sheep have been driven off this site and replaced by vultures |

... o sorry sid, i forgot that guzan blocking 5 pk's in a match isnt a statistic... forgot that mon has made as many good signings as well as one's that have never really worked out. forgot that we lost to i believe 2 of the teams this year in the bottom 3. and people say we've done well this year beating top 4 teams, and this is true. but tott have done well this year too. im sorry i dont have stats for everything. but i do look to improve villa. weather u wanna see it or not. |

... FASTBACKACE I'm sorry but what has Big Brad done to deserve people calling for him to be dropped. Yes Little Brad is playing well, but Big Brad has been a rock all season. He has the highest shots to saves ratio in the league FFS (78%). Couple this with the long run he is on an I wouldn't say he would be out of line to ask for a transfer if dropped, no matter how well Little Brad is playing. Great result tonight. Pompey had their 20 mins but by all accounts we were the better team and we played 'keep ball' for a bit. Awesome. |

... at least a vulture can get his own food. pancho- totally agree with HUNTelaar. lol. this he would be great, or cole as i see him as as good if not better than carew and heskey, if anyone saw him play against arsenal, his touch was better than crouch's as for a mid, id love to see steven defour. i think mon was going for him, but hit a snag or till he talked about it like Bentley. |

... fast back, where have I asked for quoted stats? People can say what they like obviously but hoping a player in a Villa shirt gets injured and calling MON a negative p***k are, in my opinion, well beyond reasonable as is moaning when we are winning and bossing a game away from home to get in to a semi final Please don't think these comments are aimed at you, they are not, I made one quite gentle response to your comment which I later apologised for. We all want better for the Villa (at least I assume we do) but some people have strange ways of expressing it |

... Chill lads, we're into the semis of the League cup. Rejoice, as I am. We sounded like we did fine and dominated the game (BRMB). Damian said it and it probably came across as a little harsh, but he was right, imo. We beat the bottom of the table team with half their players out. I'm just being realistic. Now it get's tough. Odds on us drawing United? I don't know, but if they put their second string out we'll beat them, no worries I have to say though, as much as I don't rate Heskey FOR US, I wouldn't want the bloke to break his leg. No doubt it was just meant as a footy fan and not a genuine wish. Footy does that to you |

... r0bb0 Spend an hour good tourism in the old town, its like a labyrinth with all the alleys. Then go to Söder, part of town south of old town, to street Katarina Bangata , and pay tribute to legendary swedish footie Lennart "Nacka" Skoglund. You know when you have arrived when you see the great statue of him, close to his birthplace. While on Söder, you will find the best and most bars in Stockholm. Also Enjoy the view over the city from Mosebacke torg (square) also on Söder. Its a beautiful town really. |

... r0bb0 HT as probably summed it up best, i only know where a few good bars are in stockholm as for my comments, it isn´t that i was unmoved, it is like i´ve said on the most recent post; i´m not getting carried away. chances are we are going to play one of the three best teams in the league in the next round and chances are we will lose over two legs that is chances and realism. sure we could win but the smart money wont be on us and even you have to accept that as for the views of individual people on the blog, i think you credit me too highly. there are a growing number of people that are getting frustrated that i speak to that dont even comment on this site many are hoping for more but it isn´t coming and one result doesn´t turn that around. before the start of the match pompey were 12/5 and we were even money - that should tell you what even the bookmakers thought it is also worth mentioning that there is a growing number of people getting frustrated on every aston villa website, it isn´t just here. you might have been reading it here from a few people before you saw it on other websites, but the number is growing .. but, we are a fickle bunch aren´t we so that could all change if we are 5th come the end of january with a nice little gap between us and 6th |
