This is no ordinary match, this is the quarter final of a competition. We win this and we are in the semi-final, two matches away from a trip to a final, at Wembley. This is a big match. This isn't the last 32, this is the last eight and we are within touching distance.
There is however a few fairly large hurdles to jump first and while we are all happy with Pompey, if we win tonight, there is every likelihood we will face either Manchester United, Chelsea or Arsenal over two legs in the semi-final.
However, we could also face Manchester City, Spurs or Blackburn over two legs, if we win tonight, so rather than worry about that or write ourselves of before we have even left the trap, let's just see what happens. It could turn our that Spurs win at Old Trafford and Harry Redknapp changes his stance from 'concentrating on the league' today, to 'Silverware is very important to a club like Tottenham', if they win and they might, just like we might.
We will be dropping a few links to this page later and we will be updating on a regular basis as we get any team news or or anything else related to the match, but we will start with this one, a link to PaddyPower, because you will get 11.10 for us to win tonight and while it isn't great, you have to fancy we will, unless O'Neill rests a few players to focus on the league.
For now, your predictions below please and I will update this page as soon as we know more.

I didn't realise that they were missing so many players due to being cup tied but they are still a capable team at home mainly through their willingness to pass and keep the ball. They might just enjoy not having the pressure of the relegation battle now hanging over them tonight. I just find it hard to really be confident of this team no matter who we are playing. Probable Pompey line up: -----------Begovic----------- Wilson-Kaboul-Ben Haim-Hreidarsson Yebda--Brown--Utaka---Belhadj -------Piquionne--Dindane---- Considering O'Hara, Boateng, Finnan and James are all out this would probably be pompey's strongest line up. While it is potentially dangerous there really is a significant weakness in their midfield without Boateng and O'Hara which we must exploit. The two French lads up front are inconsistent, but both have quality and could be dangerous if we aren't on our game. Their defence is bo no means great and while this will be a really tough away game we have to consider we might smash them to bits. This team were playing well under Hart, but looked devoid of ideas against Man U. We need to play five in midfield and close them down fast all over like in the first half at Spurs. They are nowhere near as good at the back as spurs and I fancy we could be two to the good by half time. The advantage of getting a lead in the first half is that: a) Grant may decide it's not worth it and make a few subs to preserve them dor the weekend b) they have a confidence crisis and their heads may drop c) We can soak it up and hit them on the break although there is no way we should play as deep as we did on sat. |

I love all the positivity here about tonight, I really do, but I'm not so confident, I've been a Villa fan far too long, and these kind of games give me nightmares, we never seem to show up for these kind of games, why, I'll never know. One of MON's biggest strengths apparently is motivation and getting players up for games, well tonight we'll see if he can even do that anymore. He has a quality delivery and can go past a player and I agree he needs to be played as an out and out winger in the right formaiton with someone to aim at to really be of use. Not sure what we need him for though unless Milner is definitely coming inside and MoN still wants two players vying for the RW position. Three very recent examples I can think of are Beckham at Madrid, Giggs at times in recent years and of course Gareth Barry who was much better in the centre than he ever was on the left wing as he didn't have much pace. Just a thought. |

Young would be more of a striker not a CM who could float so i don't think that is the same as being a midfield general. Regarding midfielders becoming wingers i think many teams are doing that. They don't become wingers but rather left/ right sided midfielders. Arsenal play Rosiky, Nasri and Arshavin there and they are not really out and out wingers (Robert Pires before that) . In fact i think the day of playing 2 wingers who hug the line like we do may be gone and that may also be a factor as to why our CM can't cope with very average sides also. It definately doesn't help the possession stats. |

Looking back as some of Milner's highlights, they seem to often be in the middle or back half of the pitch when he tracked back to make a key tackle. Why not give him a chance to play that more central role as he obviously has the ability to tackle and doesn't seem to get flustered in tight spots. I don't tend to agree with the MON bashing that we often see on this site, but I still can't see him taking a chance with this one. Perhaps when Downing is fully fit he will at least experiment with different players on the wing. |

The only reason you could argue we miss him now is because none of our other midfielders can play the ball in the same way he did, yet there are better teams than us filled with players who can. |

Milner has the pace and presence of mind to break from deep and probably get a few goals. He made up for his lack of pace with this and he is my mind is far better on the ball out there then Young is. He didn't always just cross it in he could vary his delivery and play it short and take it back again. that goal againest Spurs was a perfect example of what he could do out there. If was were in charge i would have bought Diarra and put Barry on the left and Young on the right and also have Petrov. Benitez has since admitted he had Barry earmarked as a left sided midfielder to combine with Torres and not as a CM as many thought he would. |

My criticism was that he often passed backwards and sideways a lot and didn't have the pace to make breaking runs from midfield, but lets not kid ourselves, he's pretty decent. In some ways this is why I think the problems we have with the midfield are relatively minor at the minute and we simply need someone to dictate the rate of play and keep the ball rather than making the silly audacious pass and giving it away. We just need to start doing the basics well again like we did in MoN's second season. |

So he will not drop them. He has real faith in Gabby, holds Carew in contempt ( based on his discourse during that fourum thing) and has little real faith in Heskey ( although this may be based on our, the collective villa fans, evident disdain for him ) therefore he will play the three in a five man mid. When Utd play 442 it is a 451 without the ball because of how deep Rooney plays. It is dependent on the workrate and intelegence of the players. Something I'm afraid Carew lacks. ... I'm usually a rather positive, glass-half-full Villa fan. But, today, I feel rather sour about the upcoming holiday fixtures. We have United away, Sunderland away, Stoke home, Arenal away, and Liverpool home. Yikes. In 4-4-2, our midfied have trouble getting the ball into our strikers. So there is little point to having Carew on Heskey on the pitch. I want to go back to playing 5 in the midfield: -------------Friedel--------------- Cuellar---Collins---Dunne---Warnock --------Petrov-------Delph/Reo-Coker Young---------Milner---------Downing I would go with Delph over Reo-Coker. Delph is the only player on our roster who can provide the composure and flair that we need so desperatey in the middle of the park. It's time to let him sink or swim. The risk is worth the upside, and is preferrable to persisting with an otherwise average midfield. I would also rather have Cuellar playing out of postition so that we can also keep Collins on the pitch. |
