Aston Villa 1 Stoke 0: Job done and some nice statistics

I am a bit late with everything today mostly because the wife booked a Christmas dinner with friends a few weeks ago, when apparently I told her that we were playing on Sunday this week. I don´t think I did but I´ll forgive her.

But, I have just seen the first hour and I have just seen Carew score and kick the corner flag into the Holte End and the result was a good one, possibly even the best of the season according to Martin O´Neill.

But, this is just a news post and a notice to vote for your man of the match. I don´t normally include subs, but as Carew came on so early for Heskey, he is in today and I fancy he might get it, or he will be in with a shout anyway.

But the statistic that I quite like is one you´ve heard me bang on about quite a bit the past couple of months and it is the passing. Today, we made more passes than we did against Sunderland, United and Hull and you know I was quite happy with the improved passing in those games.

The total number today was 294 and we only failed with 40 something and while the final result wasn´t all the goals we maybe would have wanted, it was, from what I have seen so far, a good win, in so much that Stoke might feel unlucky and they did have some chances, including a goal that maybe should have stood.

There will be a post mortem tomorrow, when I´ve watched the game again, but as it stands right now we are 4th, two points clear of Spurs and six points clear of Manchester City in 6th.

I´m quite happy, actually scrub that, I´m very happy, but I´m still not going to get carried away, just yet. However, if we can get six points from the next two, I might, you never know.

Now, time for a beer and more football.

I'm pleased we won, of course, but the reality is we shouldn't have. That performance was nothing to be proud of, and Stoke had what looked like a seemingly legit goal ruled out, and carved out a lot more clear cut opportunities that we did. That win came right out of the catalogue of wins from last season - the collection of "lucky" and "dodgy" wins. For large parts of the game we were outplayed.

Now I'm left wondering which was the fluke - today's fortunate escape or the great results from last week? We'll find out soon, because if we play like that at the Emirates we'll get beaten.

Onto the players, Cuellar and Dunne played well again today, but sadly the fullbacks weren't quite up to their usual standard. Luke Young in particular had a poor game. Milner and Petrov did well but Downing was poor. Ashley Young - it's hard to criticise a guy who occassionaly puts in a cross that leads to a winning goal, but take away those moments and he's doing absolutely bugger all at the moment. I'm this close to starting a campaign to get him rested, he needs it.

Overall, we should be pleased to have taken 3 points. Very pleased, because we didn't really deserve them.

I was at the game today in the Holte end! atmosphere was pretty decent, the second half didn't start well and a few fans were getting restless because we were passing backwards and hitting it long, to be fair to Stoke they were well organised! we shouldve been 1-0 up in tht 10 minute period inthe first half where we dominated them!

I thought we looked pretty lethargic and Stoke looked very energetic! downing did some great work on the left for the goal pinging a great cross field diagonal pass to young for the cross! good delivery as well from young!

it wasn't a classic game but given the circumstances it was a great result and that's 4 clean sheets in a row!

You just have to be pleased. One week, 3 games, three wins, no goals conceded.
Beforehand 3 very tricky games on paper. A tough one at OT, a tricky one at Sunderland, then a potential banana skin at home against Stoke.
Last year I think we may not have come away with the three points today. Didn't see the game cos the stream kept going down, but by all accounts a battling win.

Today's game is the type we have to win if we aspire for Champions League football next season. There will be games when you have to battle for a 1-0 win and today was one of those days.

Well done the lads, rest up for 2 huge games coming up

To take away means to remove, and "those moments" mean the 1 cross out of every 20 that leads to a goal.

Look, at least whenever Milner isn't creating/scoring goals he's actually helping out elsewhere on the pitch. He can pass and move like a footballer. Whenever Young has the ball he generally does absolutely jack with it. He tracks back, yes so what, so do 90% of all wingers in the league as part of their duties. My concern with Young is that he's not learning from his mistakes. Last season he ran riot and skipped past defenders for fun. For whatever reason he isn't doing that anymore, but he hasn't adapted his game to work around it. The result? Losing possession. And then there's the crossing. I've lost count of how many he's put straight into the hands of the keeper.

Young is not playing well. 1 assist does not equal good performance. So what if e comes up with these assists every so often, it's not enough. Everybody else in the team is contributing far more and Young needs to buck his ideas up.

Oliver I was right in front of the goal and we didn't even flinch when you scored, he had his hands extended and was a clear push to get the height advantage.

for all of stokes persistance they never had one shot on goal! gabby shouldve buried the goal in the first half! Carew had a great chance, sidwell shouldve wrapped it up!

we never got out of 2nd gear today which was understandable, 3 games - 7 days! yet we still won and kept a clean sheet! no one can be unhappy!

I saw Tony Morley interviewed on the official site recently (members only), and he said that playing on the wing is really hard because fans expect you to be brilliant all the time. He went on to say that you could only be brilliant every once in a while, but if you were, it usually resulted in a goal.

Maybe we should view Ashley in the light of those words.

Fair point, but we see glimpses of what Young can do very well. Last season he used to cut inside and create opportunities from the middle, he doesn't seem to do that anymore. There's no reason why he shouldn't be able to do the things he did previously - he hasn't lost any ability so why has he dropped off so dramatically?

My point is we're left waiting around for matches at a time, sometimes, in hope Young will eventually provide that killer cross. In between, he contributes very little. Whereas someone like Milner or Petrov are constantly contributing to the team with clever passes and important tackles. They are players with a lot to offer. Young only offers something every now and then (entire games have gone by where he's done nothing).

I'm not saying drop him, I'm just saying rest him. Bring Albrighton in and give him a chance. Young has been playing for so long now a break might just do him good.

Great win and I agree with MON, in that this could well be the best win of the season up to now.
3 games in a week and this was one we could easily have lost, imo.
The fact that we didn't, makes it seem like we're getting the "something" that seperates the top notch from the rest.

Viva, I totally understand what you're saying about ash and I agree to a large extent.
But he did the bizz for the goal.
I've said before, he can be shit all game for me, but as long as he supplies the cross for the goal, he's undroppable, imo.
Even though a big part of me wants him "rested" for that kick up the arse.

I thought we played fantastic the first 20minutes or sountil Heskey got injured. The long delay seemed to change the momentum of the game and Carew lost possesion the first 5 or so times he touched the ball, and what we had was lost. We struggled to get any rythm after that but defended excellently again, if you keep a clean sheet then it just takes one goodpiece ofplay to get the goaland the win, that can't be called lucky. L. Young's no look tackle on Tuncay was immense and won us the game in the end.

Every time he whips in a ball like that one for Carew, opposition managers and defenders start drawing up more and elaborate plans to try to stop him. The more they scheme to stop Ash, the more space and opportunities are created for Petrov, Milner and the rest.

We were poor today. I can't think of a player who was particularly good. Maybe only Dunne who is perhaps the signing of the season in this season's premiership.

There's no doubt that Ash can do incredible things with that ball, I guess some people just feel he's not quite living up to his potential at the moment, compared with Milner, Dunne, Petrov etc who are not only giving each game 125% [not that CBs can afford not to with another 25 incredible ones waiting in the wings] and they're really performing and we can count on them to do the right thing, but there are some times when ash gets the ball and we all think "Ooh, is he going to do something good with it or scuff it".
I still love the lad and think he's brilliant, though I agree that he could be more consistent.
Would dropping him help? God knows, but after four clean sheets, I say we shouldn't risk it for two of the season's biggest games so far.

i thought it was a great win today. we have taken 3 wins from 3 in the space of a week and still there are fans complaining. i just don' get it. we beat stoke today and it was a decent performance, what more were some of you expecting, maybe 3 or 4-0. the fact of the matter is, stoke played very defensively and had the midfield packed, chasing down every ball, so they made it hard for us. but we still battled on and came away with the win, which was a great result and much needed seeing as other teams had slipped up.

also regarding ashley young, i cant believe vivavilla is saying we should drop him. if it wasent for his crossing we wouldnt have got the goals againast man utd and stoke today, and both would of probbaly ended in draws. so what exactly is your logic for dropping him. yes, he isnt palying as well as he once was, but hes still producing the crosses that are winning us games, and the team as a whole keeps winning.

Well not really. You see, last season we would have either lost or drew the game. We had to dig out the result, and for me thats a sign of the progress we are making.

Its easy playing teams like Manure and Sunderland cos they like to play. Stoke are a different kettle of fish who get under your skin. If you dont match them, you lose.

So another sign of our improvement and a testament to our work rate. And you know what?

Its work rate that wins you things. Im happy.

How do you know your team are becoming a top four side. When you see that team get a rubbish decision in their favor, play poorly and win the match. It may not always be pretty but Villa's defenders do the job. I think vivavilla makes an interesting point. The continuity of the starting lineup is important but at some point (like next week) MON will need to rotate some people. As good as Ashley is he might ned that rest as much as Gabby or anyone else. This is a higher quality squad then before I hope MON uses it!

Viva, I think you are being a bit harsh on Ash. He is not at his best but he is contributing a lot, his defensive work has been superb this year and I think your stats are out of date, 6 assists in the league now I believe

I also don't think we were as bad as people are making out yesterday, watched the match back again last night to make sure I was not being too claret and blue eyed and we battered them for most of the 1st half. We let them get in it too much in 2nd half which is a typical Villa fault at the moment but they were hardly looking like scoring too often. I must say I thought the disallowed goal was an obvious foul on Warnock, might have been an offside in build up as well.

After such a tough week, to come out of this with any type of win was tremendous. Hard games coming up but I am well happy

To be honest, i'm not that bothered. We have the depth this year to sustain our challenge. Other than 1 striker to play alongside Gabby and keep him on his toes in the form of Robbie Keane I don't want to see any more signings that could disrupt us and throw us off course.

Someone said Luke Young was shit? Did u see the game? He was immense at the back! Warnock had a terrible game, which goes to show how hard Ashley worked today, as they all did. I sit in family stand opposite away fans, they were great, i didn't hear the Holte today, strange, i guess we're saving ourselves for 'Pool. Anyway, 4 in 4, no goals conceded, brilliant. Merry Christmas smilies/smiley.gif

we only need 1 player in january, someone to partner gabby, hesky and carew are doing a job for us, but it is clear they are not the answer, and if we are honest who ever you pick it is the weak link in our side. I think we have the depth to take a chance on a foriegn player, if he doesnt come off we still have the hesk and carew to fill in. I would like to see krasic or jovetic, although they are not very MON signings. Maybe Mancini will hate tevez and sell him to us on the cheap, he would be the perfect player their.

Also i dont see how anyone can be anything other than posative about yesturdays performance, stoke played well, they bombed our box with long range missles, our defences held up pretty well, there are not many defences that wouldnt struggle against a long range bomb up to sidibie. remember that is how we played for years, up to about 4 games ago, and we used to do pretty well. We got the result, 4 in a row in the league, 6 points above man city, 8 points above liverpool, 2 above tottenham, level with arsenal, and 2 behind man utd. The simple facts are their is a break away top 5, much like last year where it was us, arsenal, liverpool, chelsae, man u. This year it is us, tottenham, arsenal, chelsea, man u. If we can finish above any one of these teams we will be playing champions league football next year. I think at the moment we look like the thrid best team there, man u will come back strong and we will look like the 4th best team in the league, as long as we stay strong, 4 points from the liverpool and arsenal games and we will be sitting very pretty, it would be a brave man to bet agaisnt us getting 4 points or more, we are in a very very good position, playing very very good football.

oh, and i think we miss Heskey, he drops deep and brings a defender out and creates space for Gabby. Carew just dont do this as well, i agree we need a better player than Heskey, if Tuncay swapped sides today we'd have won 3 or 4, smilies/smiley.gif

Martin O'Neill has warned Aston Villa fans there will NO new signings during the January transfer window.

Having spent £40million last summer the Villa boss concedes there is no money left to boost the club’s bid to break into the top four.

“At this minute I wouldn’t see us being active in bringing players in over January,” said O’Neill. “Things change – but as we speak I don’t think we’ll be bringing people in unless somebody has left the club.

“I know it is only round the corner, and January is a long month but I have not had any discussions with the owner about what we might do.

Just a thought about the 'rest Ashley Young' thing, but has anyone thought of playing Delph on the wing? I believe its where he used to play for Leeds. Haven't seen too much of him, but i think he's reasonably nippy and he's stronger than Ash. Even if we just played him for 20 mins at the end next time we're 2-0 up just to see how he does. Im still concerned that Martin isn't going to rotate come the new year and we'll see the predictable decline in Feb. Incidently, wtf was Sidwell doing on the pitch? Of all the people to sub Downing for.

Incidently, agree with Billyboy's point about Tuncay, he'd have been a quality signing. I think we were even linked with him for a while in summer.

We looked jaded but we won. I think there`s a lot more to come
from Downing, and hopefully over xmas period. This should make
make life easier for ash.

Hoef, MON doesn't feel that Delph is ready yet, and whilst I don't agree with many things that he says, I have learnt to trust him, he knows his stuff.

Viva, I'd have agreed with you about Ash a few weeks ago but he's been improving, and yesterday was one of our better players. The only player who was really off form yesterday was Warnock, but after his other performances he's allowed one off day.
Credit to the Stoke fans..the best we've had at Villa park for a while in my book

Damian, you may like us to make more passes but you'll need to educate quite a few of the Villa Park faithful. As someone else pointed out, there were plenty of frustrated groans in the ground whenever the ball went backwards.

four games, four wins, four clean sheets and this was the most inportant because we didn't play as well as we could have. Isn't the sign of a championship winning side winning without playing well?

We might find ourselves in a title race if we keep this form going.

Oh yeah and these players just played a gane every 72 hours for the last week. Of course they were tired after the running they've done this week and we still won!

Expect them to be a little fresher at the Emirates.
