First off, I haven't seen the match yet and while I know I will, I can also say it won't be tonight or tomorrow morning despite having the opportunity, so this is very much just a new post to say 'we won'; woop wopp.
I don't know specifically why I didn't particularly feel that up for this match today though. I know that to some extent it is the manager resting so many players and on the face of things not wanting to win it and I know why he has done that, so I don't need telling but I don't think that is the only reason.
I don't think the FA Cup has the magic it used to have and basically, I'd almost given up on it. I might get more into it if we put out a full strength team for the next round, but I need to believe the manager is taking this tournament seriously for me to take it seriously.
Anyway, enough of me. To the match. Nathan Delfouneso got the first, King Cuellar got the second and John Carew scored the third with minutes to go from the penalty spot. Talking of penalties though; Brad Guzan saved another.
So, we are in and on that result you have to fancy we will be able to go to Blackburn on Tuesday night and get the right result to set up the second leg at Villa Park on January 20th.
So, that is it. I might or might not do a more in depth look at the match on another day but with only 25,453 going to this match - it appears that the magic of the FA Cup is dead for quite a few more than just me.
Team News
Brad Guzan, Habib Beye, Carlos Cuellar, Stephen Warnock, James Collins, Stewart Downing, Webcam Young, Fabian Delph (Steve Sidwell 46), Nigel Reo-Coker, Nathan Delfouneso (John Carew 75) and Emile Heskey.

We have had three seasons bleating about the lack of depth in the squad, now he jiggles things a bit and he's a defeatist, You cannot argue that this side today is the same kind of thing he did to us last season with the European Herring trophy, that was a slap in the face, this was mostly sensible given the run of fixtures we have in grim northern hell holes. |

... first off, i was at the game today, and far from ur comment about martin not setting up to win or whatever, i think you're being a bit naive. MON knew we were playing blackburn, and knew blackburn were also going to make changes, knowing that blackburn, like us, have an important semi next week. MON also knew we have much stronger depth than blackburn. i call that good managerial ability. i dont like all this negative talk about MON still. secondly, a bit of a comment on ashley young and the reasons for his dip in form with contrast to last year. today he was a threat, and a bit part of that was fabian delph and i realised that HE is missing barry. a left footed centre mid to open up the play and switch it to him. the right footers like petrov play the ball a little bit behind him so he has to come back to get it, whilst a barry or delph has the angle to play a slick pass infront of him. just a comment |

Beye and Collins were ok but no more and emule did next to nothing. The one exception was Delph. No need to pick sidwell again IMHO - shame he got a knock. I do take your point about doing this piece by piece but if none of the back ups are showing form that demands selection then why change it? They are all his signings now and it's up to those who aren't in the side to change the status quo surely? |

... went to the game today, really enjoyed it and the score line almost flattered Blackburn...agree with a previous comment about MON knowing that Blackburn were going to rest players for the semi-final and it basically came down to who had the stronger squad today, and apart from just after halftime where we lost our way a bit and got a bit lazy, the gulf in class between the teams was clear! Delph was taken off as he had the flu for the passed couple of days, but what a great first half from him! Reo and him were all over Blackburn and I thought Reo-Coker did his usual snappy tackling and actually managed to pass the ball quite well, so credit to him (I still think his passing and vision is woefully below par for a top 10 premiership club midfielder) but his work rate and tackling and the general defensive side of his game is right up there). That said I liked the Reo-Coker and Delph pairing in the middle and may well see this more often at some point this season or start of next as Petrov gets older and plays less. Sidwell is an able replacement but overall I think he has been dissappointing and just seems to completely lack confidence, which I think ReoCoker lacks sometimes but always has his fitness and tackling to fall back on. Delfouneso played really well up front and made Heskey look a bit ordinary at times, although I feel Heskey has alot to offer to a young player like him in terms of advice...probably on how not to finish... Beye is a more than able replacement for L.Young, however much prefer Luke as I think he is easily top 3 right back in prem. Nice to see Webcam get a bit of confidence back, although he should have finished that one on one, made two goals today though! Very encouraged and our slow but ultimately lasting improvement to our beloved team is evident on days like this, in my opinion MON is turning us into a top4 or 5 force by end of next season or even the season after, but once there, the way MON is going, we will be there to stay! very pleased villa fan! |

We badly lack the killer touch up front, which needs to be sorted big time this Jan, but for many periods of the game it was like a practice match - either we were that good or Blackburn that poor. ... Just wondered what peoples opinion would be of playing Fonz with Gabby and changing our striking "philosophy" of using a target man all the time? Heskey doesn't score enough goals and JC tends to drift in and out. Our weakness is our strike rate, look at the Spuds and Citeh and that's where they are stronger than us. Sounds like Delph could be an exciting midfield attacking option during the second half of the season. |

... Villain-from-Texas what is realistic target though; as in, how do you define what is realistic or not? for me, realistic is ruud van nistlerooy and rafael van der vaart in january - but you might say no it's not and i'll say prove it and you'll say you cant and you'll ask me how i know they are realistic and i'll say i cant and we'll dance, go round in circles and we will never know general krulak once said that if martin o'neill wanted a £30mn player he could have him. i also think general krulak is here just for PR but many don't, or actually didn't. they might now. but lets assume, because he is an employee of lenrer that what is is saying is the truth. we all know you cant have a £30mn player on £35k a week. a £30mn player will cost you £120k a week plus - so we have to assume that salary is irrelevant and i think that is fair to assume, then we can have those two that i've mentioned and between now and the end of the season - i really think they could make an impact and i really think with two players of that quality - we could, if they remained injury free and we continued the development of our passing game break into the top four. but you'll tell me they are unrealistic, or you might and my response to that would be, that if we have real targets of top four football, we need two real players of that quality and of that i think you might agree some might even say though that it doesn't matter who we sign, our football is still shit and actually that they wouldn't even come to us because our football is shit ... so maybe it doesn't really matter and on that. i am going to bed |

He looked nervous and didnt look like he knew what to do with the ball, not bad in the tackle though, but not the one for me im afraid. Delph for me was having a good game, tried a few blocked shots and got his foot in, always willing to spread play aswell. Sidwell doesnt add anything much for me into our midfield, he is so frustrating, he works and gets stuck in, but again i think we need better. Downing didnt look to interested and looked a bit short of confidence esp running at players, he seems slower and scared of getting hurt, but given time im sure he will come good. Fonz and heskey, not bad, i thought they lacked the understanding and didnt show good enough touches at times, but they worked hard and the fonz scored. heskey never looks like scoring / reo - coker m.o.m, cueller/collins - excellent as usual. warnock - played better, guzan - good pen save shame about the goal, onwards and upwards boys. good win, not the best performance but we will march on together. But the team he put out won, which believe it or not probably means he wanted to win. But you can understand him putting priority on the league cup and making changes, being just one match away from a final at Wembly and all that. And the attendence is absolutely par for the course for a third round fa cup tie. Blackburn in the 3rd round fa cup is hardly a classic tie, add to that we lost the previous two league matches. |
