The result today sums up, for me anyway, why we are going to win the League Cup final next Sunday.
Martin O´Neill is one of the best managers around at getting his players up for a match and he failed in the first half, but the second half was different and during the interval he must have said something. He will not make the same mistake next Sunday.
We were always going to win today and had the manager not said something at half time, I still fancy we would have won, only because Burnley are so poor away from home, but he did say something and after 15 minutes of the second half we were 4-1 up. Game over.
Post-mortem tomorrow, but please, vote for your man of the match. I am undecided although I am thinking Downing, because he scored twice but I´m also thinking Milner.
For now, what more can I write. It isn´t often we score this many so my recommendation to you is, go to the pub, or open your fridge and have a beer and go be super nice to your wife or husband.
Basically, enjoy this victory. Hope for the same on Wednesday and expect the same next Sunday. Sunday is the most important game of our season to date and I suspect it will turn out to be the most important when the season is over.
One week to go and we will have silverware. I just believe it.

We also should beat Palace playing Carew, Fonz, Delph, Sidders, Davies, Beye and Luke Young with no problem. Exciting as its been for a long long time to be a Villa fan! |

And yes, Downing was shite, his goals apart. Some lovely crossfield balls again though, although that makes us a long ball team Good confidence booster and just what the doctor ordered Contrary to what some are saying, full strength against Palace will rightly be the way we'll go. |

... From looking at the remaining fixtures , it looks like a battle between Villa & liverpool for 4th place. Allowing for slip-ups with relegation fodder , these two teams have by far the easier run in. Spurs have to play utd , chelsea, & arsenal on the trot in April so they wont be in the running . Man city will chalk up a bagfull of draws in their run in , so with a game in hand on Liverpool vs their slighlty easier fixture list , its a two horse race . I hope they stay in the european losers league for a few more rounds. |

You can't really say 'his goals apart' because they were part of his performance and he could well have got a third. Give him a full pre season and he'll consistently put in better performances next season. In the meantime his 2 goals today will give him more confidence going into Palace and Wemberlee. |

I started a few chants off or carried on some from the Holte and got a few others singing. I forgot what it was like leading off chants as there are plenty to do it in the Holte. Made me think though it doesn't take much to get a better atmosphere going and that helps (I think it helps the players and intimidates the opposition but even it doesn't it makes it more fun). I know the goals helped but if we can get the atmosphere a bit more buzzy Villa Park can become a better place to be again |

More pleaseI said exactly the same to my son several times during the match today. Think of the small percentage of crosses and chips into the box that end as goals. If 20% of those were shots instead I'm convinced we'd score more goals. If a cross gets a deflection there's a small chance it'll deflect into the goal. If a shot on goal gets a deflection there's a good chance it'll be on target and evade the keeper. I thought Ash's goal was a deliberate shot rather than a cross btw...particularly as it helps prove my point! |

... Just to come back to the comments about Lerner for a minute. I dont beleive for a minute the club has already decided on the transfer budget for the summer. A lot depends on the results between now and the end of the season. We are in a recession and if results tail off sales of Carew or Heskey, Reocoker or Sidwell, Shorey and Harewood should raise enough money for a striker. If Real Madrid want Cellular he will definitely go and that frees the money for another signing. If results go well ie two more Wembley arrearances in the FA cup and the nirvanha of a 4th place finish money won't be a problem. If Lerner is purely in it for the money that would be best time for him to sell, especially if he's taken a finanical hit in the recession. ... I agree that Milner in the last few games has not been quite the player he was earlier in the season and it's tempting to blame it on tiredness. He has played 32 games already but that is one less than Ashley Young (who's played the most games for us so far) and I would say he's getting better with each match recently. There's been plenty of comment about the possibility of players tiring and there being no more substitutions than last year. I think I'm right in saying that we only used 20 players in the permiership last year, but we've used 22 so far this year with over a third of the season still to go. Only Young, Cuellar, Petrov and Milner have played over 30 games and only 4 others have played over 20 so it does seem that there has been more rotation this year even if we might sometimes wish it was greater still. Players who've played fewer than 20 games and ought to be fresh if called upon (and fit) include: Luke Young, Bouma (back playing in the reserves) Sidwell (ok..not everyone's favourite), Downing, Carew, Albrighton (great hopes for him), Delfouneso, Davis, Delph, Reo Coker (apparently making good progress) Beye (unlucky not to get more starts, but it's tough to break into the meanest defence in the premiership), Clark (great hopes for him too!) Heskey and Collins have only played 20 times so they should be fine too. All in all, it does feel as if we are much better placed for the run in this year than last. |

... Just read an interesting article by Gary Lineker about MoN being the best man to take over from SAF. I thought one paragraph quite instructive: But, in spite of a fantastic record there — two League Cup successes, European football and three top-10 finishes in the Premier League — Martin never really forgave City fans for their impatience in his early seasons at the club. I sense that he has similar misgivings about Villa fans and that really saddens me. I just wish that fans would give him the respect that I feel he deserves and it think ultimately his critics on here and the know all t**ts behind the dugout will do Villa a great disservice by driving away the best manager we've had for years. |

... I agree on why mon signed sidwell. He tore Barry to shreads when a few years back. Mon mentioned it once he signed him. Sadly the sidwell today is happy getting paid and has no motivation. He was also one of the big reasons shorey signed, giving mon big reviews as they are best mates. Would like to see davies, l young, delph, Carew and fonz start on wed - sidwell, beye and albrighton may feature. Dunne, cuellar, milner, heskey, gabby rested |

... steveo, I feel like I must have missed something with Petrov today as eveyone seems to be raving about him, I thought he struck the ball really baddly today and lost it a couple of times which is not like him. Not getting on his back just didn't think him and Milner were at best today |

... Have to agree with those who say this was a game of two halves but what a second half. Thought we struggled to get going in the first period. However, we certainly did the business in the second half, good to see Heskey score. When Burnley scored after 10 mins I felt it was going to be a difficult afternoon. I feel if this was last season we might not have got back at them.Perhaps thats the difference this time around imo we have become a much more difficult team to beat. All in all a very good start to a very important week, well done the Villa Boys. Palace up next and more of the same please, hopefully without giving them a goal start. UTV |

...think ultimately his critics on here and the know all t**ts behind the dugout will do Villa a great disservice by driving away the best manager we've had for years. Robbo, I can see what you're saying , and i agree with MON being our best manger in years ,but if he's that fragile as Linnekers comments suggest maybe he's not ready to take the step up . I'd love to see him stay at Villa but if he wants to go ,so be it .I think he's the eternal underdog and that's his & Villas charm at the moment but if we want to move into the very top echelon maybe we need a change . I for one am happy with our current lot so i'm on his side. |

... Am I the only one who has started considering Heskey to be a threat ?? At corners and in attack I find myself looking for Heskey to see if he'll score. Maybe I need a rest! |

For me Downing does not put the effort in, i would not be sad to see the back of him & sidwell cpet i remember downing and milner running the whole field to score in one game the other day. just the 2 of them took on like 4 guys in a 80 yard spring. i think downing will come good. like gabbys is coming good, and milner. |

(please bring in defour) i for one hope we do become a good cup team, and do well in league, then we can buy some good players and be a everton like team. UTV |

... We were terrible for fifty minutes today absolutely shocking. We seemed very laid back defensively and our only threat going forward were set pieces. When we got ahead of them they caved in and in fairness we finished them off. Anyway its all about three points and we got them. Little Ashley MOM by a mile, he is starting to show a bit of form. Milner was terrible until we had the game won then he started to play. Not good enough. You need your center mids to be battling when you are struggling and he was absent. He is playing very poorly at the moment and needs a kick in the rear. He should forget about England and concentrate on Villa on current form he won't make the squad. No injuries so roll on Palace. |

... Well well well I said a big win and I said the MULE would get one !! All this talk of us not having any money in the summer and MON wanting out. Strikes me as scare mongering because another team is pushing all the way to the end. Why would Lerner not want to spend money on the team ?? after all he is going to be doing the ground and whats the point in having a big ole ground if you cant fill it ?? do you think he is that silly do you also think he is that silly to let a manager who by then could have won us our first trophy in 10years and the first manager to take us in to the champions league ?? Supposed people that leak this stuff make me laugh, I wish they would think about what they are saying before they say it. As Damo pointed out he may be using Villa as a vehicle to lend to and make profit from and if so good on him but at the same time he would be aware that domestic and European success will make his profit increase in value and the club be able to carry more debt hence make him more money. If this bloke did not want to spend anymore money the ground wouldnt be getting done and even if MON has to generate his own spending money is that a bad thing ? I fancy Cuellar will be off love the guy but Madrid will come knocking and he will go we paid 8 so 15+ for him , Invisidwell, Hokey Cokey so whats that 30 or there and there abouts from the sale of 3 players, Salifou "the Legend" 100+ and there you have it a transfer budget from the sale of 3 players that the team can live without, we have no need to worry. We are on the edge of the waive and we are about to ride it riptide and all so lets not start with all the scare mongering and ruin our experience of what will be the week of dreams !!! The game i was there we was pants we didnt play very well looked like we was playing at 25% less, THIS IS WHY MON IS THE ONE what ever he said at half time worked and we came out fighting and in the space of minutes the MULE was running round with his arm in the air THATS when you know things are going well. Yes we played bad but doesnt everyone always say if you play badly and win thats what great teams are made of, we played badly and hammered poor old Burnley.. Highlight of the match 2 songs one about MULE scoring and the other 1-0 and you f%^&d it up, 1-0 and you f$%$%£d it up. |

... Gents - hope all is well - great result yesterday, so good to see us scoring goals again etc. etc. Reason for post is comedy: In the Times paper yesterday they had a 4-way prediction of remaining results for the 4th spot contenders....the result was that Liverpool and City would finish on 65 (with L'pool snatching 4th by GD) and with Villa on 63 pts....the GENIUS thing about it was that they'd neglected to put our game away at Hull (which is to be postponed from 27th)! Assuming we win that we would finish on 66 pts and steal 4th outright!! PERFECTO! Should I be one of the hundreds that write in to correct them? |

... I don't think we played that badly in the first half if i'm honest. They scored from a great little move and apart from that we had most of the posession. I just think we lacked a little drive in the final third and 55/50 tackles. I think it's fairly obvious a few of the lads were conscious of not getting ruled out of the final through injury or suspension. A rocket up their arse at half time and great performance over 10 minutes and it was all over. Downing has been brilliant recently and anyone who says otherwise needs to go to Spec savers. Two goals and two assists in two games is pretty decent. Milner had a good game too, not his best, but pretty solid. I think he came into the centre with such an impact that it is now expected of him every game. The truth his there is no player who can do that in EVERY game. He played well, kept the ball, made some important challenges and I'm glad Ash and DOwning stepped up and made the difference. I fancy that Delph will get 90 minutes on Wed, as will L.Young and perhaps Delfouneso too. It's nice to see a few goals going in the F column and it's a shame we conceded a second, but we played very well imo and not just second half. Heskey was bloody immense all game and I was gutted when he went off. Carew is no where near as important to us despite having a better goal scoring record. Heskey is the nuts. Roll on wednesday and then we can look forward to the cup final. |
