Aston Villa have signed a new goalkeeper. His name is Andy Marshall and at 34 years old I think it fair to say that he is signing as a deputy, or should that be as cover for Brad and Brad, just in case both get injured.
He comes with some pedigree and experience, having played for England at U21 level and the likes of Nrowch, Ipswich, Bournemouth, Gillingham, Wolves, Millwall and Coventry.
It is a one year deal, no idea on money, although he was I believe recently on trial at QPR, which might have worked out, I don't know, but if you had to pick between Villa and QPR, who would you pick?
There is really very little else I can tell you without taking it from his Wikipedia page, so rather than me copy and paste, you could click here to find out what it is you want to know, but remember, it's Wikipedia, so take it as you want to take it.

For the record, I've watched Parish play a few times and he's nowhere near the standard needed for the premier league. Hi Damian, Slightly off topic, knowing that you have a strong interest in "progressive" tactics & formations I thought you may be curious about an article about the "so-called" outdated 4-4-2 formation which MON appears to like. ... My brother is an Ipswich fan and I can say that Marshal is a really decent keeper. Good enough to start for a top championship side and easily decent cover for a year. I imaagine this just because Parish isn't quite ready. We all know that barring the few exceptions to the rule keepers generally don't make a name for themselves until their mid-late twenties because so much of the role is about experience as well as ability. Nice to have another body in, and a keeper of a similar standard to the one we let go. Now can we sign Cannavaro and Nesta please. |

It is perfectly sensible and we are better positioned than the vast majority of the Prem with those 3. |

... Just because we have money doesnt mean we can attract world class players! MoN has spoken about signing a player of sniejders calibre and then the fans attack him when he can't pull it off...maybe this is why he keeps his transfer targets close to his chest!?? selling taylor for x and bringing in marshall for 0 is good business! obviously there was a monetary incentive to do this, so hopefully it will allow us more money for the tranfer market. They say you build a team from the back so i'd rather a world class defender than CM first! depending on who is available and wants to come to villa. The CB's is an area of real trouble and i worry that im waking up to rumours linking us with a LB RW and CM! The last CB we were linked with was distin! and that seems dead! lets just bid 14mil for hangleeland and see how it goes.. |

... Jesus Christ, you'd swear this signing came out of some of your own pockets!!! He's another keeper, big deal, more the merrier, we had a problem with having just 2 keepers before, in case some of ye forgotten, maybe young Parish is just not ready yet. Think about it, it VERY likely that one of the Brads will get injured or sent off over the season, so who then becomes the keeper on the bench? If Marshall had not have come in, it would have been Parish. And what if he had to be called on? In a hugely important game? Think about it. I'm sure MON hasn't forgotten about the "priority positions", for those of you who still think he's an absolute nutjob... |

... I'd settle for just the oe top quality CB. Clark can be 4th option. We only needed 4 options last year as Cuellar was constantly having to play RB. Three with experience with Clark and Beye as back up is probably enough. Also I'm not that desperate for a striker either. Therefore one very good CB (an organiser and leader) plus that world class creative midfielder would suffice. Clutching at straws ?????????????? Well make of it what you will. Source 606 I'm afraid. "There were rumours VDV was at BodyMoor heath, he sent a couple of Emails and phone calls but can't confirm anything or say that it definately weren't true, perhaps the interview mentioning Sneijder was a screen and instead getting VDV, I don't know, wouldn't put the past MON." |

MON is not as stupid as some on here may think. He knows what he needs, and I guarantee you he is trying his upmost to get them. The optomist in me says he will get in who he needs, but then the scheptic in me thinks he is already lining up his excuses. I can hear them now. We really tried to improve the team, but we didn't have enough time to complete the deals They wanted 5 million for the player, and we were only willing to pay 4.9 million 3 days till the season starts. He may not have the players in place by the big kick off, but as sure as god made green apples he will have them by the time the clock strikes midnight on the 31st. We now have great options on the wing including albrighton and the opposition won't know we are 1 dimensional. |

Definitely think Villa can surprise people this season, a couple of CB's have been mentioned on numerous occasions and this has been widely talked about, however I think another area we must look to more this season is our strike force. I have no real worries about Carew so long as he stays fit, but Gabby has to re establish the form he showed at the beginning of last year, and carry it on for a full season if he is going to be taken seriously. |

I would prefer Milner playing in the whole with Ash on the right and Downing and the left. i think he can strike the ball better than ash with both right and left foot. ... Just got my tickets for Saturday. Looking forward to seeing us get off to a good start and taking the missus to her first match. PS...a note to all the moaners and haters; please stop whinging. Negative pressure is a bad thing as several ex Tottenham, Newcastle and England managers have discovered. Its unbelievable how little some of you know about football and your own team. When Albrighton played in the Peace Cup people were like 'who`s this? He's good'. Moaning about signings and couldn't even name the whole squad. Time to start showing some love for the signings we`ve made, the players we've retained, and the youth players. Class of 2009 is a good one, and some sensible business bringing in an experienced back up keeper and don`t forget we already have three young 18 year old keepers with bags of potential whoever was whinging about his age. We have 36 players as well as the 9 we recently upped to the first team. Isn`t that something to cheer about? For sure, a couple of quality first teamers would be welcome, but I still think we have progressed...and the future is very bright (and unlike other teams we can hold onto our young and future stars...they believe their time will come, and it will). COME ON VILLA...lets kick on |
