Aston Villa sign Andy Marshall

Aston Villa have signed a new goalkeeper. His name is Andy Marshall and at 34 years old I think it fair to say that he is signing as a deputy, or should that be as cover for Brad and Brad, just in case both get injured.

He comes with some pedigree and experience, having played for England at U21 level and the likes of Nrowch, Ipswich, Bournemouth, Gillingham, Wolves, Millwall and Coventry.

It is a one year deal, no idea on money, although he was I believe recently on trial at QPR, which might have worked out, I don't know, but if you had to pick between Villa and QPR, who would you pick?

There is really very little else I can tell you without taking it from his Wikipedia page, so rather than me copy and paste, you could click here to find out what it is you want to know, but remember, it's Wikipedia, so take it as you want to take it.

God you lot are miserable, he's obviously not for the first team is he, it's just a bit of cover, if we signed a 18 year old unexpierienced goal keeper, would you be over the moon? If so why?
For the record, I've watched Parish play a few times and he's nowhere near the standard needed for the premier league.

I wouldn't be suprised if he retires at the end of this contract and joins the coaching staff.

think were lineing up friedel as a goalkeeping coach when he retires.

if we signed an 18 year old goalie, it would obviously be one for the future and would do him good being a 3rd choice goalie. im not too bothered by the signing, friedel has played every game in the league for the past 4 years so the chances of brad and brad both being injured are unlikely.

Hi Damian,
Slightly off topic, knowing that you have a strong interest in "progressive" tactics & formations I thought you may be curious about an article about the "so-called" outdated 4-4-2 formation which MON appears to like.
According to the Guardian it may be back in vogue? Good article, good reasoning & insight, as long as it's flexible.

My brother is an Ipswich fan and I can say that Marshal is a really decent keeper. Good enough to start for a top championship side and easily decent cover for a year. I imaagine this just because Parish isn't quite ready. We all know that barring the few exceptions to the rule keepers generally don't make a name for themselves until their mid-late twenties because so much of the role is about experience as well as ability. Nice to have another body in, and a keeper of a similar standard to the one we let go.

Now can we sign Cannavaro and Nesta please.

Good signing that Marshall. We don't want some inept kid as 3rd choice. What if the Brad's are both injured in September?

We need 3 keepers. 2 Premiership keepers and a championship quality keeper as back up.

What's the problem with that?

It is perfectly sensible and we are better positioned than the vast majority of the Prem with those 3.

Just because we have money doesnt mean we can attract world class players! MoN has spoken about signing a player of sniejders calibre and then the fans attack him when he can't pull it off...maybe this is why he keeps his transfer targets close to his chest!??

selling taylor for x and bringing in marshall for 0 is good business! obviously there was a monetary incentive to do this, so hopefully it will allow us more money for the tranfer market.

They say you build a team from the back so i'd rather a world class defender than CM first! depending on who is available and wants to come to villa. The CB's is an area of real trouble and i worry that im waking up to rumours linking us with a LB RW and CM! The last CB we were linked with was distin! and that seems dead! lets just bid 14mil for hangleeland and see how it goes..

Jesus Christ, you'd swear this signing came out of some of your own pockets!!!

He's another keeper, big deal, more the merrier, we had a problem with having just 2 keepers before, in case some of ye forgotten, maybe young Parish is just not ready yet.

Think about it, it VERY likely that one of the Brads will get injured or sent off over the season, so who then becomes the keeper on the bench? If Marshall had not have come in, it would have been Parish. And what if he had to be called on? In a hugely
important game? Think about it.

I'm sure MON hasn't forgotten about the "priority positions", for those of you who still think he's an absolute nutjob...

I'd settle for just the oe top quality CB. Clark can be 4th option. We only needed 4 options last year as Cuellar was constantly having to play RB. Three with experience with Clark and Beye as back up is probably enough.
Also I'm not that desperate for a striker either.
Therefore one very good CB (an organiser and leader) plus that world class creative midfielder would suffice.

We may not be able to attract players of Sniejders profile but we can still sign players of Sniejders class and ability.

We might just need a better scouting system, look what Wenger got for the price of Sniejder ..

Toure 150'000
Henry 10.5 m
Fabregas free
Viera 3.5m
Pires 6m

Total - about the same as Sniejder would be ( give or take a bit of inflation )

Can't believe the number of people whining because we signed a third keeper.

Someone tell Martin not to dare - ever again - concerning himself with every area of the squad in case he offends someone because the third choice keeper wasn't called Buffon.

Misery guts.

Why are people bothered? This is just a necessity, no more, no less.

Not exciting? So what? Going into a match with no keeper cover if either of the Brads gets injured or suspended is not the kind of excitement I'm after.

Not counting the goalkeepers. In.... delph, Downing, Beye. Out... Laursen, Barry, Knight. So where are we strengthening? Ok, Maybe Albrighton will play a bit. But we are truly down this season compared to the begining of last season. If Luke Young doesn't get fit for Saturday and Davies's shoulder goes, we will end up with Beye at center half and Reo-coker at right back! Keep the faith?? I'm trying!

I'm a big a fan of MON as anyone. I hope he gets his targets, I know he has them. I also hope that if he doesn't the Villa fans won't turn on him when or if things get tough this season, and make him rethink his commitment to the club. MON is not as stupid as some on here may think. He knows what he needs, and I guarantee you he is trying his upmost to get them. The optomist in me says he will get in who he needs, but then the scheptic in me thinks he is already lining up his excuses. I can hear them now.
We really tried to improve the team, but we didn't have enough time to complete the deals
They wanted 5 million for the player, and we were only willing to pay 4.9 million

3 days till the season starts. He may not have the players in place by the big kick off, but as sure as god made green apples he will have them by the time the clock strikes midnight on the 31st.

If not, THEN let the complaining begin-but I don't think it will be necessary

Fabio Capello failed to include Judas in his England Squad to tour south Africa. Many attribute Barry's exclusion to the 3-0 drubbing at the hands of the Nether Regions in august of last year. The turn around in events are even more remarkable given the inclusion of Fabian Delph in cappelo's squad.

To those who are criticising Heskey, have you had your eyes closed for most of the game? Or are you determined to get on his back because of who he used to play for? He's played well tonight and if you can't see that then you need to take a look at yourselves and ask why you WANT to be critical of a Villa player for goodness sake.

On Saturday it was interesting to see him playing a couple of clever tricks too. By all accounts he's a football workaholic and I wouldn't be surprised if over the break he's been working hard on the parts of his game that he's been criticised for and now wants to show that he's far more than just a talented workhorse

Not once did he try and turn and take him on.

Milner shower how average the right back and did really well.

Definitely think Villa can surprise people this season, a couple of CB's have been mentioned on numerous occasions and this has been widely talked about, however I think another area we must look to more this season is our strike force.

I have no real worries about Carew so long as he stays fit, but Gabby has to re establish the form he showed at the beginning of last year, and carry it on for a full season if he is going to be taken seriously.

I would prefer Milner playing in the whole with Ash on the right and Downing and the left. i think he can strike the ball better than ash with both right and left foot. I'd even take Reo-coker and Petrov as the midfield partnership. Very Combatative giving that front 4 the protection needed.

Im confident but would still like 2 CB's and sneijder or VDV or both!

Just got my tickets for Saturday. Looking forward to seeing us get off to a good start and taking the missus to her first match. PS...a note to all the moaners and haters; please stop whinging. Negative pressure is a bad thing as several ex Tottenham, Newcastle and England managers have discovered.

Its unbelievable how little some of you know about football and your own team. When Albrighton played in the Peace Cup people were like 'who`s this? He's good'. Moaning about signings and couldn't even name the whole squad. Time to start showing some love for the signings we`ve made, the players we've retained, and the youth players. Class of 2009 is a good one, and some sensible business bringing in an experienced back up keeper and don`t forget we already have three young 18 year old keepers with bags of potential whoever was whinging about his age. We have 36 players as well as the 9 we recently upped to the first team. Isn`t that something to cheer about?

For sure, a couple of quality first teamers would be welcome, but I still think we have progressed...and the future is very bright (and unlike other teams we can hold onto our young and future stars...they believe their time will come, and it will).

COME ON VILLA...lets kick on

Steven, compared to Huth, Wheater, Distain, Dunne, etc... All overpriced with issues. Campbell free and DeMerit almost nothing. Alternatives are not there. I would love Hangeland but aint gonna happen. Rather spend big money on sneijder or vdv.

Badger, Bentley might not be an awful signing but for us a winger is not what we need. We need a CM who can control pace and the ball and a CB. The price and return Bentley could give isnt worth it in our squad.

Must admit though that was probably the most devastating I've seen Milner. Talk about stepping up to the plate.........

Yeah, he definitely looked to make the most of his chance, and came through big style. Really happy for him.

I think mon will dissapoint again with his transfer dealings. I hope this unwanted keeper is not part of the "5 players" that mon wanted!

Anyway I still hope we will get in another 3-4 players before 31st august, but I can't see it happening.

wow, MILNER was awesome on his cameo, on the left as well, shows MON has no clue what he's doing

I think MON does have every clue what he's doing. He pursued Milner because he's a quality versatile hard working player. He is played on the right cos he's a predominantly right footed player.

Well am i right in saying we are back to where we started!! same numbers that finished last? do i think we have replaced with better players? i like Delph........ but as we know MON wanted a bigger squad this year and i like the idea of bentley coming in to play the barry role, i dont think he would play wide as we now have loads of cover in those areas. we also need 2 central defenders and a striker as i feel marlon deadwood will not get near the first team again this year, did he play in the peace cup? if not why the hell is he still there and why has he got the number 9 shirt???????????? dont think it is going to be a greta year but we will be ok but just ok i feel and once again a mid table finish to 6th, nothing to get to excited about though!!!

See it works guys!!!

About midday i sent an email to Andy Marshall asking if he would come to our side, just like i did Wesley Sneijder,he was at the Slug and Lettuce in Fulham when he replied, he put down his pint of snakebite and finished his scampi and chips, now look, we have him!! Keep sending the emails to Wesley and the same may happen!!smilies/wink.gif

Would rather have marshall as a 3rd choice keeper than a youth keeper who has no experience! Its only a one year deal so we can bring in parish as 3rd choice in a year!

Unfortunately, I work in Coventry!!!!

the sky blue fans are just laffing at me after that signing.

Marshall cant even make their 1st xi, just hope this bloke has a nice fat ass as he will be using alot this season sitting next to MON on the bench.

C'mon, where are the REAL Signings for 09/10 - perhaps MON thinks all his young England Starlets will step up to the plate to get a place in Capello's World Cup Squad ???
