Aston Villa to play Manchester United in League Cup final

Manchester United just beat Manchester City which means we now know who we are playing on February 28th at Wembley.

I for one wanted it to be United as they are going to have a busier schedule and I just feel our chances are better against them as we have already beaten them and we know how to.

So, this is just a news post, notification if you like, that in a month from tomorrow, it is Wemberlee time and well, itś a big game, the biggest we have had for a while and you know I think we can win it.

But, that optimism is for another day. For now, I am still walking tall, but I am not getting carried away.

I was delighted to see City get knocked out, before the realisation that we're probably playing the much better team now.

Ah well, City are out.

Also tonight was Fergie's final. He may just start a few lesser players at the start of the final. Hopefully the likes of Anderson and Gibson will start.

United in the League Cup final. Brings back memories of Atkinson, Saunders, Coca-Cola, ITV, Big Ron, United's yellow and green etc.

I was hoping we'd get them. Dunno why, cos there a better team than City, but as mentioned, their schedule might be busier, and they could play some of the fringe players.

Not scared one bit. We can win it.

How good is it to think that Barry moved for 'ambition' reasons in order to win things at a 'bigger' club yet on 28th February he will be watching on his TV as the Villa are led out at Wembley to compete (and win) the League Cup. I am so glad it is United! Come on Villa!

Happy enough that united won as I feel that we can take them at wembley. In the end they may decide to rest some of the senior players as they may still be involved with league and europe. If we do beat them it will be history repeating itself from the nineties. UTV

I would much rather have played City because Man UTD are the better team. Simples. I don't fancy our chances against UTD. We might have beaten them recently but look at our record against them. Not looking good. I guess anything can happen in a final though. UTV!!

I'm not as worried as some of the others on here about the lack of goals. If we weren't creating chances then we'd really have cause for worry, but the fact is that we are creating them and on another night some of them would have fallen. It's a shame that a couple of them fell to Downing who had an unusually off night tonight.
Let's face it, we've scored 9 in our last two cup games, we just haven't scored them in the league.
Oh...and I'm sure someone else said it before, but the referee was bloody awful tonight...a real disgrace. Left the ground to chants from the Holte end of "You're not fit to referee" ringing in our ears and based on his performance tonight....he isn't.

Just for interest..Heskey got a standing ovation from much of the crowd when subbed off. Reckon it was deserved too.
Somone said that when Gabby was brought down it should have been a penalty. It looked a foul from where we were but can anyone say for sure whether it was or not?

Just a real shame Gareth Barry wont be there to see us lift the cup...maybe MON should send him a ticket ha ha ha
Just watched tonights game we really do need a prolific striker, however thought Ash had a good game, how did Downing miss those 2 chances looked like he bottled the header to me!

I have my ticket for the final but it is a shame the club has not delt with the fans corretly
I have the top price band ticket yet the ticket office has decided that i could not purchase the Cat A ticked as they are only releasing so many a day 100
So this will also cause problems for the fans in the cheaper seats as they may not be able to afford the top priced tickets
Once again they have kicked the trinity stand in the teeth so geeting there 1st thing this morning was a waste of time

today just showed that all we need is a striker, and im not convinced in delf.

Gabby had 2 goals in 2 games in a row at the beginning of the season, and sadly he has slowed down.

i want a proven, 30 mil striker.

bid for torres in the summer, 35 mil should get it.

I prefer that we get to vs Man U in the final. They are not as desperate for a cup and also have a game against West Ham on the 27th the day before the final. Hopefully this will make Sir Alex use some of his weaker players in the final. You cant expect players like Giggs (champion) or Scholes to play two days in a row. Sucked in City/Barry and good on you Dunne!

I'm with you fastback: It's not just the ability to finish, it's the ability to be in the right place at the right time. We are firing the ball into the box and neither Heskey nor Gabby know how to make the right runs to capitalise - they wait for the ball to come to them.

MON - buy someone like Huntelaar, or give Delfouneso his head

Think this final should be super interesting, could well be the defining point of our season. We seem to have an easier fixture list in the league now, with a few exceptions, so the confidence from a cup win could well be the kick up the arse we need to push for fourth.

fastbackace and pancho villian, agree with our need for a big striker. just don't have a clue who we could realistically get. any ideas?

Here's a prediction to set up Damien.......

How many games will MON let it go before he changes (drops) one of our piss poor forwards (Gabby or Heskey)?

We cant afford to keep tolerating both of them and I cant quite believe im saying this but at the moment i'd stick with Emule!

Having the Fonz on last night could not have hurt our chances and no goals in four games is scary stuff!!

What does everyone think?

The CC will always be more important to us as Man U will have their other eye on the PL title etc. In addition to this, they have serious off field problems (debt, players wanting out etc). All in all, I'm very happy with the way it played out and doesn't it just warm your thinking of Barry sitting on the sofa watching Dicky Dunne and co lifting the CC smilies/grin.gif

Take that Wneger you granny faced old french bat!!

Good performance from the lads. Yes we all know we need a striker, but no point harping on about it, it'll happen eventually. There are goals in this team, just be patient.

Good performance, a well earned point of the prem form side and a clean sheet with a shuffled defence against the top scorers in the league. Get in!!

Downing was unlucky, he's been playing pretty well recently so i'll let him have that one, lets hope he can score at the weekend and rectify it.

Ash is getting better with every game at the moment, wouldn't it be great for him to really start firing with the run in on the horizon. It's time for this team to take this season by the scruff of the neck and kick on.

We're away to Fulham and Spurs now and it's got to be six points for me to take into Man U at home which will be a big game now we know we have them in the final.

I'm really pleased and I am also happy that we frustrated Arsene and he got owned by O'Neill after the game.smilies/cheesy.gif

We are in a final, the squad is now looking strong and MON is doing a really good job. Obviously we can all think we are managers and say MON should play 4-5-1 or 4-4-2 or buy certain players and not buy others. And do you know what, most of the time we would be wrong! There is no question that MON has turned us into a top 6 / 7 team and in doing so has assembled a great, young squad. This is a real achievment especially when you look at the stupid money that City, Spurs, Chelsea, M Utd, Liverpool and even Sunderland have spent over the last 3 years or so. So we all want to move to the next level and be a top 4 team, in the Champions league each year and competing for domestic cups each year smilies/smiley.gif
What I just can't understand is what is the logic in not getting a finisher in? MON obviously wants to win and he knows we are shy up front. He knows we have not scored in 4. I am assumming it is not the money (3.5 from the Blues) as we could easily afford a loan striker like Eidur Gudjohnsen or even buy Boyd. I am trying to be realistic and not look for the 20m or the Huntlaar so has anyone any idea why an intelligent manager is not filling an obvious gap?

Theres got to be something in it. If so thats got to be 12 mill at least for them both, plus the money for gardner, making 15 mill for ???

Jones, Keane, Paulyvchenko..???

Looks like spurs are going to land Gudjohnsen, so surely they'll be off loading a striker soon.

The only place to be, every other Saturday
Is strolling down the Trinity Road
Meet your mates, have a drink, have a moan and start to think
Will there ever be a claret and blue tomorrow?

We've waited so long, but we'd wait forever
Were claret and blue and we would leave you never
And when we make it, it'll be together...
Oh oh oh

Aston, Villa
Aston, Villa
We're gonna make this a claret and blue day
Aston, Villa
Aston, Villa
We're gonna make this a claret and blue day

Oi!
Lalalalala
Lalalalala
Lalalalala...

We've got some memories, albeit from the eighties
When Morley and co. restored our pride
Now we've got hope in our team and suddenly it's not a dream
We'll keep the claret and blue flag flying high

We've waited so long, but we'd wait forever
Were claret and blue and we would leave you never
And when we make it, it'll be together...
Oh oh oh

Aston, Villa
Aston, Villa
We're gonna make this a claret and blue day
Aston, Villa
Aston, Villa
We're gonna make this a claret and blue day

Oi!
Lalalalala
Lalalalala
Lalalalala...

Now even Heaven is claret and blue today
You should hear the Villa roar
When Aston Villa score four

Aston, Villa
Aston, Villa
We're gonna make this a claret and blue day
