Aston Villa v Fulham live, John Carew, backing for Warnock and a Dunne deal

I love it when Villa are playing. The wife knows it is one of those untouchable days, which is why I guess she likes it so much when the football season is over, as she can get me to do stuff around the house and generally be normal, but she knows today that, despite work needing to be done, that she can't ask as there are more important things to worry about.

She also knows that my mood for the next few days is very much based on the result today. It sounds strange, but if you were to all ask your wife, girlfriend or 'life partner' if your mood is affected by the football, they might tell you that it is. It is one of the reasons why she always asks me the result; not because she is actually interested, only so she knows how to be with me over the next few days.

Well, I'm in a positive mood today and I she hopes it stays that way and she I think it will. But before we get to the football, we have some paper news.

Paper Views

Having a quick glance over the net I've found that Martin O'Neill has backed Shorey Warnock to gain an England place, mostly because of his versatility and has hinted that he may be played in a number of positions. O'Neill said "He played midfield against us last season and scored a goal. If players have to move around different positions, it is no bad thing."

In other paper news, John Carew has dismissed speculation suggesting there is a rift between himself and the manager. No one man is bigger than the club, but Carew is certainly a fans favourite and he is a proper big bloke.

John Carew
There’s no drama, no hocus pocus, nothing going on behind the scenes any more dramatic than that I had a fever. I’m fine again, I’ve been back in training for a couple of days, was back in the team and hope to be again.

If you are telling me that there’s rumours and stories on the internet then I don’t know about them. If you haven’t read things like that then they don’t need to worry you.I love the fans here, and I’m just happy that they seemed so pleased to have me back in the team because the welcome I got was terrific.

So, the rumours of a rift have been flatly denied by the man himself; how much clearer do you want it to be? I must admit myself to thinking something could have been going on, but this should put this story to bed now.

League Cup

If you didn't know and I was a bit lazy with this news yesterday as some are still not finding the site on the new server and I don't want to be keeping two sites up and running while the change happens, we drew Cardiff in the 3rd round of the League Cup.

The match will take place on September 22nd or 23rd I suspect and Peter Enckelman, Riccardo Scimeca and Peter Whittingham will all be coming home. Well, not maybe home home, but you know what I mean.

A Dunne Deal

Depending on the paper you read, this deal is as good as done, it is just a case of how much money Dunne can get out of City before signing. One paper says £6mn while another says £2mn and well, you can't blame the player for trying to milk City for all he can get much like you can't blame Rooney for going over easy yesterday or Eduardo for diving earlier in the week.

Assuming he gets what he wants, talk is he should sign by the time the window shuts, which I now understand (thanks Badger) is now 5pm on Tuesday as tomorrow is a bank holiday.

Aston Villa v Fulham

Right, we will be updating this page with team news, some links to a few places where you can find the match online, this one might look new but it is the same as the one I usually recommend, they've just changed names and I'm suure there will be more added below.

We will be updating the Twitter page with news throughout the day and if you are not yet registered here, I suggest you get registered, if you want to leave comments and not have to rely on me or someone else making sure it can get published.

We are doing this, mostly because it started to get a bit silly the last few weeks with the type of comment that basically turned the site into a forum and when we have a forum up and running for banter like that, it seemed sort of pointless. I think this is the better way of doing it and while the other server was still getting about 30% of the traffic yesterday, the banter was better on here and a lot more orderly, which I think everyone prefers.

So, updates as we get them, with match updates here and on Twitter.

Team News

We will win today. O'Neill has a fit Heskey and Carew, but he has picked 4-5-1 with Gabby up front. Is he listening or has he finally figured it out?

Friedel, Beye, Cuellar, Clark, Shorey, Milner, Reo-Coker, Petrov (c), Sidwell, Young, Agbonlahor.

Subs: Carew, Albrighton, Delph, Heskey, Guzan, Warnock, Gardner.

Great to see Carew back and scoring the other night, and nice to finally have the "injuries" cleared up once and for all.
Hope Dunne signs too, and hoping for maybe a surprise or 2 before Tuesday.

As for today, I think it'll be a case of breaking them down, whether it's 4-4-2 or 4-5-1. They're a good footballing side, but I think they'd be happy with a draw today, so someone (Petrov, Delph, Milner, Young) needs to get their shooting boots on a crack in a 30 yarder off the bar.

I think we'll win.

Great news about big John but who will partner him today ? If Gabby is going to start looking like the player of old he needs to begin doing it soon as he's had a dismal 2009 up to now. If Heskey gets the nod I'll pre empt the boo boys by not waiting till half time, maybe not even till kick off. Has anyone ever been booed during the warm up ?!!

Seriously though we really need a convincing win today, anything else and the doubts about top 6 aspirations will continue. Can't remember when I last left VP feeling really good about a game.

Damo,

Firstly, it is affected not effected by the football. Secondly, I am pig sick of you and the sheep bleating on about 4-5-1. Can I remind you that if and when we have success with that formation it is not down to you or your sheep, it is in fact the manager of AVFC - Why he wants to remain with us is a mystery, despite being one of the most revered men in the game.

Can i remind you that we won against Rapid Vienna playing 4-4-2. We were the best team and played some good stuff. All you Heskey haters, you have no idea. He is awesome, which is why Capello picks him. Someone on here had the temerity to suggest he only picks him because of the quality around him makes him look good. my answer, "Eh?"

Against Vienna he had little service but got himself in good positions. Also instrumental in our best move of the game. He will prove you wrong. Our problem is that we do not have a prolific striker who would relish the service Heskey provides. Ask Owen and co.

You surely can not disagree that MON has progressed this club. Why do you hate him so much? We are in the fiercestly contested league on the planet. Even Stoke have £10M worth of subs on the bench. Be realistic with your expectations.

MON is a winner with a winning mentality. He is slowly building an exceptional squad full of talent. He will make good signings and bad, like every other manager. He knows how to separate the wheat from the chaff. Trust in him!

Damo - Please stop going on about 4-5-1. Chelsea played with two out and out strikers and were awesome. Call it 4-5-1-1 if you like. My point is, we need two decent strikers at home, unfortunately, we only have one.

You clearly woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning.

Where have I mentioned 4-5-1 above?

As for beating Rapid Vienna. They would struggle in our league and that is no fault of theirs, they are just not a great side. We could have beaten them playing 441 let alone 442.

As for O'Neill progressing this club, I disagree. He has got us to sixth and I don't hate him, I want him to stay, I want him to get the best possible opportunity to prove himself.

We finished 6th in 2000 and 2004 and 8th in 2001 and 2002 - some say 8th would be a good finish for O'Neill this season.

O'Neill making progress would be getting us into the top four and for all those that say we finished 16th with O'Leary, yes I'll give you that, but we also finished 16th with Graham Talyor and 6th with O'Leary. It goes in highs and lows.

As for Chelsea playing with 4-5-1-1, how does that work?

As for me stopping going on about 4-5-1, why should I? I believe it is the best formation and seeing as you brought it up, not me, I will go on about about.

You yourself say we only have one decent striker at the club but in the other breath you are saying we have to play a striker that you yourself don't consider to be good enough just to play 4-4-2 at home. Rubbish.

Why not play 4-3-3 at home if that is your argument but line up in a formation that could be seen as 4-5-1.

I will back Heskey and I will back MON not picking 4-5-1 every week. We will never know if we would have beat Rapid with 4-5-1.

We obviously need to re-classify some players as Midfords - A meld of midfield and forward. The majority of the stuff on this site is pessimistic tripe. No wonder we don't achieve that extra yard.

We have one of the best managers on the planet, yet we still dare to think that there are better available and that he is 'inept' and 'tactically unaware of the modern game'. You poor deluded fools.

Another strange question and it depends on the quality of the stream. For example, if you watch a stream and you get say 300Kbps which would be the minimum you would hope for for a good stream then you'll be using 202.5MB ... but if you get 500Kbps which is what you will likely get from Villa Streams then it will be 337.5 MB

You are right. We will never know what the result against Rapid would have been had we played 4-5-1 but if you think, we were the first team to beat Liverpool at Anfield for nearly two season playing that formation it is fair to assume that we would have beaten Rapid also playing that, at home.

Also, with regard to O'Neill. Why is he one of the best managers on the planet? Because he took Leicester to the top half of the Premier League? Gordon Strachan did that and also got Southampton into the UEFA Cup; does that also make him one of the best managers on the planet?

As for his tactical ability. Had he brought on Reo-Coker or another central midfielder on Thursday when we were two up, we might be in the next round. Had he done the same when playing Stoke last season we might have been playing Champions League this season.

You'll see this as me 'hating' O'Neill when in fact it is just pointing out the facts. Most people learn from mistakes, I hope O'Neill does too.

I just descend into a pit of frustration at not seeing Villa win every single game and cup, which I guess is a slightly too high expectation. Being in a pub yesterday around the manure and arsenal "fans" in dorset made me love Villa even more as I am happy to be an underdog and not the arrogant puerile gloryboys that they attract.

Mostyn, it was brave of you to come out and support Heskey, bearing in mind the vitriol pouring on him from so many Villa fans even before we bought him. Only on a couple of occasions has he performed for us the way I had hoped he would, but it's still early days and the level of criticism is way overdone. It's fair enough for people to express their disappointment at his performances, but to say he's total rubbish, a donkey etc etc is just uninformed, ignorant and unworthy of Villa fans. I thought it was instructive to read Tony Pulis commenting on the performances of Dave Kitson. He said he was pleased at the way the fans had carried on supporting Kitson for a year even though he was not playing well and now they are starting to reap the benefits. Can you honestly say that Villa fans would have behaved in the same supportive way and helped a new player to work their way through their bad patch?

A further thought on 4-5-1. Aston.Villain said on the previous thread;

for me. the question is DOES MON HAVE THE BALLS TO PLAY THE FORMATION AND IF SO, DROP CAREW AND HESKEY?! the whole reason 451/433 worked so well last season and against liverpool is because agbonlahor, was perfect for the lone striker role because he works the channels so well, despite what many of you think of him.

A.V is right. At times last season this did work well. The problem, I think, is this: it employs route 1 almost without variety. Lump it up into the wide positions and let Agbonlahor outsprint the defender to the ball. It usually worked and got us up-field quickly.

But it’s such an easy out that nothing else gets employed. So we become rigid in our thinking and develop a long ball mentality.

Has O’Neill seen this and tries 4-4-2 to avoid this trap of becoming stereotyped.

i also agree with this .. gabby might not be the most prolific goal scorer but he is quick. he can get down the channels, hold the ball up until he gets support then pass it off ... he has done it so many times and it always looks good because more often than not he pulls a central defender out wide, we have sidwell or as we saw against liverpool, reo-coker charging up the middle of the park

i know its easy to see it from where we are .. what i dont understand is why o'neill is not seeing it

Isn't it ironic that - by playing 5 in midfield - we end up punting the ball up front when other teams end up improving possession and passing the ball more at ground level? I'm probably missing something here but wouldn't a 4-5-1 encourage more holding on to the ball and provide more variety in terms of how you play (i.e. it can become 4-3-3 when Ashley and Milner attack)?

Otherwise what is the point of having a 5 man midfield if you by-pass it with long balls? Answers on a postcard please.

one of my first proper nights out with the wife was taking her to see southampton at villa park in the 2000/01 season. i'm thinking it was the first time we played that season as i remember taking her to watch the match on tv at a pub in east dulwich for the second match and i think that was later ...

i dont think i would want her with me on a regular basis though. me taking her was just my way of telling her that the most she can ever hope for with me was getting equal to football as far as my time was concerned. never more

Churchill, you make an interesting point. I agreed with Damian last year in wanting to see MoN try 451 again towards the end of the season. Having the ability to be flexible with formations however surely does have its merits, provided the players feel comfortable with the variations. On Thursday we played some really nice short passing football through the middle of the park and there were signs that MoN would like us to be able to develop this style of play. He played 451 against Liverpool and we won, and 442 against Rapid Vienna and we won. Maybe he's just been waiting till he felt we had the right personnel to support this flexibility in formations and playing style....time will tell.

Damian, my second date with the wife was to a football match too, but as we were in Melbourne it was an Ozzie rules game. It's great to be able to share a passion but maybe your approach is better as at least you retain some sanity in the household when things aren't going so well. I do however look forward to the day when we can both go to Wembley to watch Villa play a final, and thinking about that now, I'd swap 4th in the league for the chance to see our team holding a trophy aloft.

It’s hard to deny that there has been an air of negativity around the club recently and this may well have arisen out of expectations having been unreasonably raised when Lerner took over the club. This mood is however totally out of kilter with the true position we currently find ourselves in. We really should be feeling optimistic right now: We have some very good players; a very good manager; we beat three Champions league teams in pre-season; we beat Liverpool for the first time since the signing of the Magna Carta; Delph looks as if he may turn out to be a real star; Milner goes from strength to strength; Reo Coker is back to his best; we have some very talented youngsters coming through; the success of our youth and reserve teams shows that the depth of the squad is improving all the time; Downing will add to the quality in the side when he is fit…… I could go on, but that surely is enough to ask why then is the mood so low? Let’s move on from seeing the negative side (every team has some of those) and make the most of those great moments when we score and when we win. Look optimistically towards the future, but when we have set backs cheer all the louder because that’s how we can help our team to get back to where we all want it to be.

Thats why I think we played with 2 up front in the vienna game, because we had more chance of breaking them down. People claiming why change a system if it works, look at the games, liverpool came out to win and so the counter attack was a good formation, but when we have to win and the other team sits deep we need 4-4-2. I think we'll play 4-4-2 today.

Also disappointed to see Carew on the bench. I know many will say Gabby suits the role of lone striker better, but I disagree. Anybody who is more likely to score goals needs to be in the team. It's a no brainer for me.

Damien, Rapid at home with a goal on us is different to Liverpool away looking for a first win at home. In a 4-5-1 we would never have opened them up. Man U however looked ordinary in a 4-5-1 against Arsenal and when they switched to 4-4-2 put the game out of sight. You can't play exactly the same way all season. This isn't champ man. lol

Agbonlahor will start ahead of carew because Carew probably still isnt fully mathc fit, plus I think Carew makes more of an impact when he comes on than what Agbonlahor would, I guess it's to just annoy their defence further, going from having 3 people running at them to have a big guy barging through them.

I'm looking for Young to play a key role in today's game. I don't think he's put in a top class performance since January, maybe even December. The formation plays a big key - in a 4-5-1, he's allowed much more space in an area he's much more effective in.

Over the last few months I've been starting to think he's not all he's hyped up to be. Today is a great chance to begin to prove me wrong.

You can even format them to include a stream (permission granted) and as it would be part of the site, it would use the same registration system and hopefully would then stop all the scum bags that usually flood the other ones available online?

As I suspected, looks like 4-4-2 for the visitors.

Real opportunity for us today, dominate possession in midfield and we could come away with a convincing win.

Banter/chat was excellent...well done.

And well done the Villa. I think what Gabby did today is probably what he does all the time in training, hence, while some of us may slag him off, this is why MON keeps playing him. Very well taken goal. And a nice solid performance overall.

Fantastic win. Being a new supporter of Villa, ten years now I've never been this into any sport as I am with football and Villa in particular. I haven't washed my Villa shirt since their win over Liverpool and I told my wife not to touch it either. Three wins now (well two with one over Vienna that didn't seem to count) and it seems to be working, smelly but working. lol I would like to know why MON doesn't start Carew? It seems that ever since he was caught in that club he hasn't started.
