The news is all in the title and it isn't positive. Manager Gerard Houllier was taken into hospital last night.

The club have said nothing as of yet so it would be wrong to speculate, so lets just hope it was indigestion and he will be find for this weekend.

There is a message from Kenny Dalglish though and as soon as a statement is released from the club, I'm sure someone will copy it below and I will also update this page as and when we hear anything.

Kenny Dalglish
Of course our thoughts are with him. We don't know too much about it and there is no point in us being speculative. We wish him well and I'm sure he is in the best possible hands.

Doc Waller is there, who was the club doctor here when Gerard fell ill in 2001, so he's got a good guy beside him and I'm sure the people there will do everything they can to help. We send him our best wishes.

So, lets just hope it is nothing serious and he is back soon.

This isn't meant in bad taste, but, if he were to drop dead tomorrow, who would you want as the next villa manager?

Anyone who thinks GM a go needs to be shot smilies/grin.gif

jeddy - the very wording of your question makes it in rather poor taste - why not just say 'if he had to resign' as opposed to 'drop dead'? but anyway to answer - if he left tomorrow - we'd have Moyes, Benitez, McLaren, Eriksson etc (the usual suspects) in the frame - personally i'd look at the Porto manager - Villas Boas - may just want to prove he's the new special one and be keen to prove himself in england as Mourinho did. failing that i'd rather Houliier could take an advisory role within the club, 'move upstairs' as they say, and bring a bright young manager who he can guide such as Paul Lambert (his time on the continent with Dortmund appears to have served him well) and even Michael Laudrup would be someone i believe could do big things

Yes but Kieran,
you can't deny that he's had a tough time from the fans..most vociferously at the Wolves game, with chants of 'you don't know what you're doing' and the 'Houllier Out' banners. Also, the reaction to his comments after the Liverpool took him back in their ferocity. Added to this, there have been individual battles in the squad, fallouts and dissent.

I'm not saying Houllier is blameless in all this, but you can imagine the sheer pressure of the situation; it has been that kind of season. I wouldn't blame him for leaving, as although he agreed to take on the Villa job and all its pressures, he might think he really doesn't need all this pressure after a life-threatening illness.

Oh and that first post is tasteless and stupid. This blog really annoys me sometimes, with ill-advised comments like that.
Get better soon, Gerard.

tasteless? whats wrong with number 5 post??

what im saying is that i dont see why he is under pressure? he has millions in the bank if he fails to perform and gets the sack, its not like he is going to lose his house or anything. the pressure is less than that of a normal person who has to rely on their job to survive. im not saying that there is no pressure but surely there is less than most other jobs. houllier is a proven manager, if he was not at villa im sure he would get offers from other clubs.

all im saying is that i dont see how the fans can be blamed. if he thought that managing aston villa after martin oniell was going to be easy and that he wouldnt receive any stick if it all went tits up, then he should have taken the job. i hope he has a speedy recovery as i think we can become a good team under him, but blaming the fans is idiotic.

Official Statement from Aston Villa

The Club can confirm that Gerard Houllier was admitted to hospital last night. He is in a comfortable condition and he wishes to convey his appreciation to Aston Villa supporters for their concern and good wishes.

The manager spoke to chief executive Paul Faulkner this morning and he is currently undergoing tests. It is anticipated that he will remain in hospital for several days.

Assistant manager Gary McAllister has taken training this morning and he will be in charge of the team for the game against Stoke on Saturday at Villa Park.

The Club's thoughts at this time are with Gerard and his family.

Chief executive Paul Faulkner said: "On behalf of the football club, Mr. Lerner and I wish to convey our best wishes to Gerard. I spoke with him this morning, as did Gary before he took training, and he sounded very positive.

"I've also received a lot of good wishes from fans and I would like to thank them for their kind thoughts in wishing Gerard a speedy recovery.

"I will see him this afternoon, along with Gary, and we will pass on the fans' messages. I know they will mean a lot to him.

"We would ask everybody to respect his privacy and that of his family at this time."

The Club will issue further updates when appropriate.

What a shame for Gerard Houllier and his family. Let's hope it isn't anywhere near as serious as his collapse at Liverpool.

I don't think it is right to speculate on his future. Only Houllier, his family, the doctors and the board can decide that. That is one for the fans to stay the f**k out of.

McAllister has managed before and I'm sure he can do a job until the end of the season if required.

GH was just starting to get things right and there were rumours saying all the dead wood (beye, carew, warnock, reo coker, heskey) would be cleared in the summer and fresh faces were coming in.

Only then we can really say how successful he was at villa. I hope he gets that chance but he will need to put his health first.

Maybe moving upstairs in a more technical position and bringing in a younger manager. His transfers have been very good and positive.

I just hope we don't take any step backwards..

Well, that's not exactly a medical report but if they players have some knowledge that he'll be alright then that's a boost. Hopefully won't dent their confidence or have an adverse affect and leave us losing to Stoke. We're pretty much safe but let's not get ahead of ourselves just yet. But I would hope the team see 3 points as the perfect medicine and will go all out to get them, Gary Mac isn't likely to change much if anything at all, so it's just picking up where we left off. I hope GH gets well soon, i hope it is not repeat of any cardiac problems he had previously, whatever it is it was serious enough to be hospitalised, i hope he makes a full recovery but fear he will not be able to be the manager he once was as his illness holds him back and he cant get overlyvworked up or stressed, therefore i feel randy will already be on the lookout for someonecto step into the hotseat next year with GH possibly moving to a DOF role, that is not randy being callous or insensative justvrealistic and pro active as life and football will continue and this is a multi million pund business

I have not been a fan of Gerard, but I have to say that the team are beginning to play well and the football is getting better to watch, this could be a set back because isn't McCallister who the players dont get on with, lets hope that they do it for Gerard, and maybe with Stan back as captain he will help keep the players together both on and off the pitch.

Football is one thing, opinions on it are another but as someone who hasn't backed GH I find some of the comments totally disgraceful.

If nothing else GH has always come across as a decent bloke who I am sure believes in all that he has applied to our club. He has his critics as myself but to wish him poor health is down right outrageous.

Get well soon. Football, Villa and all of our jobs in this rat race are not that important.

If that's true, then anyone who thought who didn't care or wasn't fussed about results should really ask questions of themselves.

If nothing else the man is a professional, which means he cares about the quality of his work, the impact he has.

This has been a very tough season for Houllier. He should hear nothing but support from us until we hear what his plans are.

As I've said on here two or three times, I wouldn't have been surprised if he were to quit at the end of the season due to the hostile reception from so many, the childish senior players, and the degree of questioning he's had to face about his intentions, his integrity, his dedication.

We can argue about results or tactics, but I've never felt that he was ever acting in bad faith, that he didn't take the responsibility seriously.

And obviously, he did, and the situation was not to his benefit.

Ill be disappointed if GH steps down after this season. I really believe he was going to transform this club to things we haven't seen in a long time. Hopefully he could serve us as the director of football.

Get well Gerard.

Hope we get a good win and the players dedicate it to him.

Hope the fans sing his name.

These 2 things would help him feel better when he sees it on match of the day, right at the end when they show the goals.Hopefully the winning ones.

Good luck to GM for the rest of the season.

I was surprised how saddened I was to hear of Houllier being in hospital. There are those who've suggested that it's impossible to empathise with someone you've never met, and maybe it is over-sentimental to feel saddened but if so, I'm guilty.
He comes across as a thoroughly decent, honest man with a great sense of fun and self deprecation. He came in for much criticism for showing his love of Liverpool, and whilst it was probably unwise, I felt at the time that it just demonstrated his openness and honesty. As things have started to show some improvement under him I have been increasingly looking forward to him being with Villa for a number of seasons, bringing us success and gradually finding the same love for Villa as he clearly still has for Liverpool.
I was a big fan of Martin O'Neill, but I never felt that he was capable of 'loving' the club. He desperately wanted the club to succeed but for himself rather than the club and fans. Houllier is different.
People who know him talk of his passion for football. At Liverpool this passion brought them success and he revelled in the success of the club.
He doesn't however come across as a man with a great ego and maybe this lack of ambition for himself (along with an awareness that he should keep his adrenalin in check!) holds him back from motivating the players in the way that an O'Neill or Ferguson would. What he does bring though is a more analytical (Wenger like) approach which requires longer to bring success. We are starting to see some of this play out towards the end of this season.
Apparently he is already constantly on the phone, talking football. I hope he makes a speedy recovery and next season comes back to Villa, reinvigorated, ready to carry on what he's started and to bring us the same success that he brought to Liverpool.

All the very best for a speedy recovery to Gerard Houllier.
I am sure the Villa fans will be right behind him and the team on saturday. The players will give it everything and there will be a massive show of unity - a bit like the way the fans lifted the team off the ground literally at wembley when we lost to Man U.

I haven't been his biggest fan this season but lets all wish him well and hope he's back before the end of the season.

In the longer term, having said that he was totally fine and now with the stress having seemingly taken its toll, maybe its better that he steps aside.

All the best though.
