Luke Young sorted, now for the rest of the back four

Stiliyan Petrov is interested in taking over penalty responsibilities, there is definitely no issues between Martin O'Neill and Nigel Reo-Coker as far as the manager is concerned and James Collins is out of the Wales squad.

That is your news. Now, instead of looking for something else, we are just going to concentrate on preferred players. Yesterday we looked at right back and it's pretty safe to say that there was a clear winner.

Luke Young got over 370 votes which equalled 86.9% of the vote. I think it is fair to say that he is the favourite at the club right now, but we still need to fill left back and centre back.

This is a little more difficult, as I don't have the BBC system where we can just chop and change players about, we have to do it with a poll. So, I'm doing one poll today for centre back and the player that gets the most votes will be omitted from the poll tomorrow. As for left back, that is easy, just pick one.

So, maybe by the end of the week, we will have the preferred starting eleven but lets hope that we do get some decent news about something or a juicy bit of speculation to get us talking. January isn't far away and surely, things must be happening.

Warnock as left back, no shadow of a doubt.

However Dunney gets my vote as first defender on the team sheet. Last season we had good defenders in the back line but as soon as we lost the commanding voice and leadership (laursen) it all went horribly wrong.

RD organises the defence really well whilst my second choice would be collins, I think Cuellar and Davies could comfortably look good playing alongside RD.

Play Davies and Collins, or some other combination and we could be in trouble.

Great to have Luke Young back btw, he's got a really sweet delivery going forward and I think he'll work really well with Milner this season.

Any news on DJ Stewie?

Centre half pairing depends on who we are facing, if we are going to sit deep then collins & dunne, but if its a game we are controlling and are high up the pitch and they have a nippy striker then cuellar should play as he is a bit quicker. As good as dunne & collins have been, Hines of west ham with his pace killed them

To be fair to Shorey I thought he had a pretty decent pre-season, in the peace cup especially.

However as soon as Warnock signed on the dotted line he must have known his days were numbered, he should of went to Pompey when he had the chance, now it looks like he'll be joining the hare in the championship.

Best of luck to him I say, but at the moment I'd rather see one of our youth players keeping the bench warm.

I think Collins has turned out to be a great buy, especially considering the negativity which followed his signing, myself included, but it was against the backdrop of us being linked with 'big names' at the time.
Having said that - Dunne is an even better signing and he doesn't seem to get the credit. The guy is a born leader and roars instructions to the back four. I dont think his vocalness (is that even a word) and leadership can be emphasised enough and if he gets injured or suspended - people will see the difference. A bit like Laursen did for Davies - he holds the hands of the other guys in the back four - but not in a gay way!

As someone who continually rants about MoN - in fairness he signed Collins, Dunne and Warnock for about 32m less than Toure, Lescott and Bridge - which is daylight robbery.

Just out of interest, I was keeping one eye on the Liverpool vs Clowns game last night.

I found myself in a strange position where I really wanted the Clowns to win!

The thing is, even with their new investors I still can't take them seriously. I just find them really, really funny. I don't see them as a threat at all.

However I have real hatred for Liverpool, I hate the FSW and I really want to see him getting sacked. I think it's all stemmed from the Barry transfer saga. Not only that, but should they lose benitez it would surely mean there's a possible opening in the top 4?

Despite being born in Brum I now live in Devon (surrounded by Man U and Liverpool fans) and was just curious to know if any other villa fans think along similar lines? Or whether or not it's just me!

It's a bit of a no-brainer as to who will be chosen for the back 4!

The Shorey story is a fine invention, some 'Journalist' must be very proud of that one. Why would we want to sell a fine covering left back when it has taken so long to find the right man for first choice.

Totally agree that the goal keeping position should not be excluded from the polls.

Liverpool quandary, Reina, no defenders, Gerrard,Benayoun and Torres.
Villa to Pool, all defenders, Milner,Gabby and Carew.
Some draws/equals.7 4 to us, we have a much better more settled team.
Love the poll. The idiots who vote for Emule ?????
Goalie would be very close.
Luke and Warnock by a mile.
Dunne best CB for organisational skills and experience. Rotate them anyway, even Clark, a better prospect than Cahill.
BTW, Jussi will keep Bolton up smilies/smiley.gif
Look forward to poll rest of week. do right mid, centre and left separately. 2 strikers. Gabby and Carew to romp it.
Remember last season we had Davies, Barry, 2 Youngs and Gab in England squad? We should have: Luke, Warnock, Milner,Ash, Downing and Gabby going to SA.
Curtis will leave, imo 5th choice CB. Shorey and Heskey will leave too. Maybe 12million total with roll on fee for Curtis.
Might be interesting to see Dunne and Curtis together, writing as I think smilies/smiley.gif
Good to see JPA back. Jerry must be working on a big onesmilies/smiley.gifLike Nan and Chris, thought Nan hed lost it with the Emule bits smilies/smiley.gif

I was of the same mind and wanted the Blues to win last night. But what spoilt this game for me and has been going on quite a lot this season is cheating by some players. Why have we got to this mentality of win at all costs?
Is it the chairman demanding win, win, win, or the manager or just some players?
It spoils the game, and devalues the win. Yes it’s nice to win but also teams, chairman and managers need to be big enough to lose graciously, accept defeat and move on.
It makes one wonder what ever happened to sportsmanship - or am I old fashioned?

Not sure davies is the future the future is collins and cuellar, and after clark and cuellar/collins, davies has a bad attitude considers himself to be far better than what he is, the inflated price we paid didnt help. Not sure Davies is the future we have better players in that position and promising players coming through so not sure i would take the risk with him being a mouthy "£"( like he tends to do

If the vote does go for 4-5-1, it's going to be interesting to see who get's dropped, Gabby or Carew??!!! I'd have said Carew to be on the bench, but after Saturday that'd be v,v harsh!

For me Man Utd = Blues. They are the team i really hate and we haven't beat them in 25 league attempts now which really really kills me. I'll never forget the FA cup game when we went 2 nil up with around 15mins to play. Worst night ever i think for me being a villa fan.

Chiefy - agree about the refs although I think Fergie makes it worse for them. There are sometimes little things like the (Tim) Cahill challenge though that most of us miss and commentators never point out. It should of been a red but the ref wasn't sure and rightly gave nothing.

I couldn't believe it at the time, it took the old man to point out that if the ref doesn't book him at all he can get suspended after the game but give him a yellow during the game and he walks away free.

What do you think to this concept?

If you get sent off you should be suspended in the next meeting against that team you were sent off against rather than the next game(s)? Otherwise what does the opposite team benefit apart from maybe 10 mins of playing 10 men.

I too am mainly surrounded by soft, glory-hunting, b@llock-talking, guff-breathing, simple-minded shirley's who all support top 4 clubs. The great thing about them is that as soon as you question their credentials as a true supporter of Man U, Liverpool, Chelsea, or Arsenal, they start to throw their toys out of their prams and then invent distant relatives that supposedly live next door to old trafford, anfield, stamford bridge, and highbury/the emirates. I for one love the deluded plebs because they always remind me of how proud I am to be Villa.
As for the game last night, I honestly didn't know who to hate more. An unexpected outbreak of Norovirus on and off the pitch would have suited me.

Don't comment much, bit over the negativity here lately but on the poll I will say this:

I personally believe that Dunne and Collins have been solid. Their partnership this season has been sensational and their understanding is up there with the best centre pairings in the league.
BUT those who say Dunne is the Laursen of this team and that we will crumble without him don't give Cuellar and Davies enough credit. Bar our first game, these two were solid together, and began to form the understanding I thought was always possible. I'd personally have Cuellar over Collins and I think Davies is a future England captain.
The loss of Laursen coincided with a change in tactics to the team will saw the team struggle. Had MON stuck to the system that had been us go on a strong unbeaten run, or changed the system when Laursen was in team, I don't think we would have collapsed. Too much pressure was put on Cuellar and Davies to adapt to a tactical change which left them with no midfield cover.

Anyway, nice to know we have genuine competition for places. Across the back four we can name multiple line-ups, all as strong as each other.
UTV - Be a little more positive Damian, we are 5th and aren't even playing as good as we know this team can. Don't be so quick to spit the dummy. Have a bit faith in the system and the chairman!

Paul there are 2 players who i said before the summer transfer window opened that i honestly believed were not good enough for this club. Sidwell was one and Davies was the other. Just be happy that Davies got injured when he did as i don't think MON would have signed both Dunne and Collins had he not got injured. The main reason we are where we are today in the league is down to our defense and the major factor in that is that we no longer have calamity Davies in there.

I would put Davies down as the worst defender villa have ever signed if you take the transfer fee into concideration.

Paul I would put Ciaran Clarke in that bracket and would perfer to have him as our no 4 CB so that he gets the oppertunity to develop into the quality player he could be.

I'll never forget watching us play Porto in the peace cup and for first 20mins with Davies and Cullar we were all over the place. The moment Clarke came on for Davies the whole back line settled immediately(esp Cullar) and we never looked like conceeding after that. That for me at least showed he has great potential and also just consolidated my views on Davies. He is an avrage CB at best and we paid way over the odds for his services.

the trouble with bringing a 19 CB in too early is the fact you can ruin his career before it starts as i think CB is the hardest behind GK to play in the premiership, one slip and you are at fault of a goal and then confidence drops and before you know it a quality player becomes a joke for seasons to come.

Paul i think we have been spoilt with great centre backs at this club down through the years. Even when we had a poor side it was normally a good defense that kept us safe. Teale, McGrath, Sothgate, Ugo Ehigo(can't spell his name), Alpay, Mellburg and Laursen just to name a few and when i look at Davies i just see nothing special at all. And for me the way he is constantly giving interviews without ever doing anything to talk about on the pitch just makes it worse. I know people say when we lost Laursen this and that the fact were we poor enough (just look at our goals conceeded numbers for last 2 seasons) even with Laursen playing back there and i think Davies was a major contributor to that. He is just a very good example of why the policy of buying British often just gives you a very over priced under skilled player.

All this Davies bashing is pretty harsh!!!!
When it comes to central defensive partnerships you need one vocal and commanding defender (Laursen, Dunne, Terry, Ferdinand etc), and the other needs to be an obedient and industrious drone-like defender (Collins, Cueller, Carvalho, O'Shea). Davies definitely falls into the later catagory. He's a real talent under the stewardship of a commanding CB, that's what he's good at. Talk of him being a future Villa and England CB captain is way off the mark, as I don't think he's that kind of player.
If you put two commanding CB's together it won't work (Ferdinand and Terry for example), and if you put two industrious drones together that also doesn't work (Cueller and Davies for example).
Davies most certainly does have a bright future at Villa, but only when played next to Dunne. You only have to look at how great he played next to Laursen!

On the Davies debate.. well he's not a straight forward player is he. I always knew that Zat Knight was never going to turn in a motm performance, mark Vidic out of the game or score a blinder all of which Davies IS capable of.

The problem is he's also capable of letting Rob Earnshaw breeze past him, missing sitters when it counts and being the worst player on the pitch, I just don't think he is consistent enough for a place in our new back line.

i have to say that warnock and dunne are exceptional signings.

showing my ignorance as a yank, i didn't know much about warnock until he signed for villa, but i'd been following dunne at cit-eh for years. (a bunch of friends are city friends, and as a result i've seen more city matches than i can remember).

dunne has always impressed me. full of class, incredibly hard worker, great at what he brings to the game. i was glad when moneychester city signed kolo toure and lescott, 'cause i figured dunne was too good not to have regular first team football. glad we brought him on board.

after seeing what warnock can do, i'm surprised i didn't know about him sooner. pure class, exceptionally hard worker, and a versatile player who's great with a cross and good moving forward.

MON had a good eye to bring on both of 'em, i really hope the partnership in the back continues to flourish.

I think Collins is our best CB and you could play who you want beside him. No need to hold that mans hand. Warnock at LB no question.

On referees personally I think they are getting a raw deal from the media and not getting backing from anyone. The game is played at lightning pace now, players are putting as much effort into conning them as they do in trying to beat the opposition. And there are cameras everywhere that give slow motion replays which viewers watch three or four times in the comfort of their living rooms and say oh ya the ref. got that wrong.
And then you have Andy Gray a great player but a bloody awful pundit who slates refs every chance he gets. When the man is asked for his opinions he nearly goes into spasms in an effort to sit on the fence so as not to upset the Sky Four managers and their high profile players. So he just relys on the easy target of slate the ref which is poor and lazy punditry.
I believe any player who remonstrates with a ref or his officals should get an automatic red. It would cut out those awful scenes of players running after the ref(especially Man u)and would set a better example for kids. Plus Rooney would be permanently suspended.

So when Man City play Bellamy, Tevez, Adebuyor they play 4-3-3 erm no they play 4-4-2 Bellamy on the left. So playing with 2 strikers you can simply play 4-5-1. Another example Liverpool play both Kuyt and Torres yet they always play 4-5-1 Kuyt on the right and they are both strikers.

United with Ronney who does not play up front but plays off the striker 4-4-1-1...

I was also very dissapointed with Curcic, he had a big rep when he arrived and never delivered. Same could be said for Alan Thompson. Trouble with these players is that when they are playing alongside average team mates they shine, but when they line up with class they suddenly don't look quite so good. Shorey and Sidwell also come to mind at this point although I'd love Sidwell to come good. I think Shoreys chance was gone the second Warnock signed up.

secondly
we are not at that level yet, huntelarr madrid, milan, villa ??? cant see it myself, Man Utd have had an intrest and i dare say so will chelsea, arsenal, liverpool and man city when the time comes we dont stand a chance and the same for Van Da Vaart.

now i am not saying we shouldnt be trying to get them i am just saying there sometimes is no point trying because if we got linked to them fans get their hopes up and the next thing you know we have been gazumped. We are not at that place yet but we will be soon smilies/wink.gif

To be honest i don't think Huntelar is what we need or is actually worth the money. He is a finisher and thats it. We really do not create enough chances for a player like that to be sucessful. At this stage we need a Tuncay type of stirker who can drop back into midfield like rooney does and start helping to create chances. We need a striker who is gifted on the ball and Huntelar is not that type of player. He has also now failed at 2 clubs very quickly and it is beginning to look like you cannot trust strikers who have scored lots of goals in the Dutch leagues anymore as look what also happened to that Alves that Boro bought for huge money.

I saw on SSN that Wigan are after Tamudo from Espanyol in Jan as he has fallen out with management. He would be a good buy (would be cheap too) as he is quality on the ball and is exactly what we lack in this squad right now. He would be my Jan signing to replace Heskey.

Van Dar Vaart would be a great signing but i doubt he would come. We should maybe make an attempt to loan him for the 2nd halve of the season so that way he wouldn't have to commit to moving to Birmingham without first living there for a while and that would also ensure first team football for him in the run up to the world cup. But that would only happen if no other top European club come in for him which i doubt will happen. I can see Utd or Arsenal being interested.

huntelaar needs to come to a team like villa as he will turn out to be a journey man not making it at the top clubs madrid and millan in the space of a year and not getting on the pitch for either is not going to be good for any cv.

Paul i think with Gabby playing up front we already have enough strikers who are limited on the floor. I really don't think we could carry another one just yet. From watching Huntelar over the last season he looks very average with the ball at his feet. He is a very good finisher but right now we do not create that many chances so i think buying him would only compound that inability to create as i think that the lack of technically gifted and intelligent strikers is a factor as to why we are not creating enough. I do think we could get Huntelar as i can't see too many other big clubs being too interested now.

I think that Van der Vaart (and any other big name player who is currently unsettled) will find themselves at either Man City or Chelsea in January. Man City are desperate for glory and Chelsea have only had their ban postponed. Chelsea will try and get a bunch of players in over january because they won't be able to buy anyone for the next two windows. Also, Roma have put everybody apart from De Rossi and Totti up for sale. If we were lucky, and very quiet, we might be able to make a star signing from there.
