Morning all. I'm having a good week so far and I hope it keeps getting better. On paper, it should. I mean, if you look at the Sunderland team, who would you take over what we have - maybe one and he isn't playing tonight. Surely this is next round time?
Would you put money on it though? I'm not sure yet, although I suspect I will, because I'm a sucker like that although I might wait until the I've seen the starting line up or the game has started.
I don't think O'Neill will rest anyone and I don't think he needs to if I'm going to be frank. Teams like Liverpool and Chelsea will play fairly strong teams in this tournament and they've also got Champions League where they'll be playing fairly strong teams and lets not forget the league. The best players all play 50+ games a season and you could argue that keeping them playing is an element of keeping their game up.
So, don't expect that many changes. Expect Guzan to come in so Friedel can rest his arms and knees but the team playing tonight will have to be fairly strong to win the game as Sunderland are only one point behind us in the league and have a more than decent home record so far this season.
So, the point of this post, well, we will be updating with team news as and when we get it. We are also setting up a special email address for all those travelling to the game where you can email in your images from your phone with a little bit of text and it will get automatically uploaded to the site here.
It is also, unless something really interesting happens today, going to be the place where most links get dumped and I have every intention of dumping loads today as the project I am working on is waiting for some translations before I can really do anything, if I am going to work, it is very much going to be work that I don't need to be doing and only to make myself look like I'm working, which while I used to be very good at that, isn't something I need to do on this project in my little office all by myself.
Yes, I'm a bit bored. So, team news, links and anything else I can find that is remotely interesting and lets not forget the email address where you will be able to email in your images. All you have to do is take a photo with your phone and email site@ the this domain name, thevillablog.co.uk - the image will then get picked up by the server and we will then approve the image before publishing.
A t-shirt for the best photo of the day, as judged by me.
Team News
Guzan, Cuellar, Dunne, Collins, Warnock, Milner, Reo-Coker, Petrov, Young, Agbonlahor and Heskey.
The Bench: Friedel, Sidwell, Delph, Shorey, Young, Carew and Beye.

... We need a decent performance tonight but in reality I expect it will be pretty dour. Suspect he will drop Carew and start with Gabby on his own drafting Reo Coker in maybe hoping for a breakaway goal and the shuting up shop. Its a game we should win if Bent is out, but our inability to boss teams means that it'll be more rearguard heroics from Dunne, Collins, and Cuellar. Obviously settle for one nil but we have a poor record against teams managed by Steve Bruce so it'll be tough. Inevitably the mule will figure at some point, lets hope we've got it wrapped up by then. |

Of all our midfielders - he is the only one who I would like to see as a Villa starter in 2 years time. He needs gametime, and he needs to get thrown in at the deepend - continually. Sidwell, Reo-Coker, and even Petrov haven't got 25% of the potential of this guy. Yes - many dont fulfill their potential but if he isn't given a chance we will never know. For the record I supported him playing against Wigan, and i hoped he would play every game since and no I am not his dad!! Its about time we gave youth a chance. |

Does he stick with as strong a line-up as possible, knowing that this is proberly our only realistic chance of Silverware? or Does he risk everything in making changes? I think he will do the following "sensible" changes, though whats sensible in Martins mind, we can only guess! Guzan in for Freidel is a no brainer, as is Luke Young at right-back. I think we forget that Dunne/Collins/Warnock have played very few games together, and are still learning (very impressivelly i must add), so they will start. The more they play, the more solid they become, and i cant see Martin tinkering with it. Mr Reliable in the centre (Petrov) with both Delphe and NRC coming in. The biggest shock tonight will be dropping both Gabby and Ashley to the Bench. Cant see him risking injury to any of them, or our season will become completely buggered. Heskey and Albrighton to come in, with Millner keeping his place, and us going 4-5-1. Guzan Young Collins Dunne Warnock Albrighton NRC Petrov Delphe Millner Heskey You read it here first! |

... I would drop Young for tonights game and put Milner on the left with Albrighton on the RW. Young needs to be dropped. He needs to know that if his performances are poor like they have been so many times this year then he will end up on the bench. I still think Milner would be far more dangerous on the left coming in on his favoured right foot. He has done the business for England there and we really are not getting enough shots from him mainly as he has to come in on his left foot to much. Swap Luke Young for Cullar, Delph for Sidwell and also NRC for Carew and go with Heskey up front on his own. |

... ak, I was going to post the team I think will play tonight and then you did it for me.lol Guzan is a given. Carew has to be dropped after sat, I wouldn't even bench him, leave Gabby and Fonz there. Heskey to play up on his own and see what he can do, without Cattermole we can afford to double up on Reid with five across the midfield and try and stifle their creativity. No Bent either so Jones up front, either on his own or with Campbell, but if the lads at the back can keep Drogba, Anelka and Lampard down to just one we should hopefully be ok. Delph has to play, this is the reason we bought the kid, to blood him in cup matches although we still need Petrov as a steadying influence in front of the back four. Albrighton to start on the right and Ash can sit on the bench with Gabby and watch Marc deliver balls into the opposing box. Hopefully it'll remind him that's what he is supposed to do rather than beating his man eight times and kicking it out for a throw in. Get Nigel back in, Sidwell can do with a rest and can think about his rash challenge, although I think saying he lost us three points is harsh, he had a rush of blood and it was a great turn by Kightly. NRC needs to boss this, if he doesn't we will probably lose. He has a good chance without Cattermole in the side and should rule the roost in the middle. Get your boot in Nige and win this for us like you did at Anfield. If he doesn't he may lose his place to Sidwell on a more permanent basis, maybe even to Delph if he plays well tonight. I think Luke Young should get a game, Cuellar may not deserve to lose his place but Luke needs match fitness and this is a good opportunity, he is good enough to come straight in to a game of this size and not be overawed. Cuellar can play in the next league game, but Young needs this. |

All the "oh-so-close" crosses, etc., don't count, and we rarely run onto something outside the box and let fly. It's a stat that could easily come up, and I think you're right, Milner on the left might be in a much better position to shoot. Carew needs to sit until he can be bothered getting ball-side of defenders in the box if nothing else. And stops giving away pointless free kicks backing into defenders. And starts running more, and... |

... I just hope Reo starts tonight and shows just what we have been missing in the middle of the park and makes it impossible for MON to drop him for Saturday. I just hope he realises what an opportunity tonight is and that he can make himself a regular once more, regardless of what has happened in the past. A performance like he showed against Juve and Liverpool will do!! Also, I hope Luke Young also shows what we have been missing down the right. I appreciate Cueller has been a fine stand in but full backs nowadays need to attack as well as defend and Luke is much better at that. Players on the fringe/out of favour (Reo/L Young/Delph/Heskey) need to step up to the plate and make it really hard for MON not to play them. |
Adrian Kilgallon
said:

... I think the main contributor to the lack of shots is our game plan. This game plan is also why people are questioning why our CM aren't getting up to support the attacks. We have one game plan and that is it. We get it out wide quickly and they lauch it into the box. That gives the CM very little time to actually get up and support(Would you run 50 yards if you knew they aren't going to pass it to you anyway?). Also because we rarely try and pass it so far up the pitch due directly i would say to MON's instructions the ball very rarely finds it way to any of our players in key area's where they can actually shoot from outside the box. The whole problem is the philosphy MON is instilling in this club. We are nothing but a vastily more expensive version of Leicester City. |
Adrian Kilgallon
said:

... Also re Carew there is a reason why a guy with so much talent and who has played in CL finals has had so many clubs in his short career. I think we are now seeing that side of Carew. If he hadn't come back and scored so many after returning from 'injury' last season i think MON had him earmarked for the door in the summer. If he wasn't so popular MON would have sold him but probably thought it would casue a lot of trouble with the fans especially after losing Barry. That is why he bought Heskey in Jan. As Carews replacement. |
Mike Carter

... Time will tell on Carew. He's put in a couple of decent performances so far this season, but Saturday really took the biscuit. That was as poor a performance from a Villa striker as I've seen in a long time. But who knows, a cheeky goal might give him a lift and turn his attitude around. I don't want him to leave because of what he can offer when he tries. Here's hoping. |

... Geoff, Are you mental and did you ever do english at school? ak, I agree mate, however...if you play it out wide and run down the wing and cross it in and it gets knocked out to the edge of the box would you prefer Sidwell hanging around near the centre circle cause there is no point running or would you like him running from deep and drilling one into the top corner? I just think it's the players more than the system. Delph has played in three games and has almost scored in two of them with audacious efforts from about 20 yards. This is what we need and why he was bought in my opinion. The sooner he is ready the better. He is also two footed like Milner which means in time he will naturally be more versatile position wise and be more capable of shooting from literally anywhere as defenders won't be able to turn him onto his weaker foot. I agree about Carew too, he is looking less interested with every game and if he doesn't start performing he may go in January...MoN has been told he needs to sell to buy apparently and that could be a cool, what? £8m? Am I overpricing him or not? Kohoutek, it was I who mentioned the shooting and we just have nowhere near as many shots on goal as other teams. We have some players with great strikes on them, I wish they'd just have a go more. The keeper might spill it or it might get deflected or bounce oddly (Drogba against us last week). Worth a shot if you ask me. I put it down to a lack of confidence. Badger, I'd like to see where Davies would have finished if he'd played every game like Cuellar. I think you do him a disservice. ... Davies was very inconsistent. At times he'd be fairly solid, but there were moments when he just put in absolute howlers. His main problem is he has no confidence whatsoever with the ball at his feet. He panics. He'll spray the ball around left, right and centre, a lot of the time to the opposition. When Davies had the ball, I always got the feeling that Vincent Price had just whispered in his ear "Curtis, they're coming for you". Hilarity would ensue. James Collins on the other hand is the polar opposite. I've never seen a central defender more composed and calm on the ball. It shows because Collins is more than a decent passer of the ball. He'll even connect on a long range cross-field ball every so often too. Collins has been rock solid so far. Davies would every so often be a wet lettuce. That's what we can't afford. |

... Quite surprised how strong a team he's gone with. I think it gives quite a lot away in terms of our current first eleven, the fact that he's chosen to play Reo, Guzan and Emule shows how close they are to actual EPL starters. Perhaps this is what we can expect if the 3 do well. |

...Badger...that's what reporters are there for isn't it...to try and stir up controversy even when there is none This is that bolox on BRMB. The chat about it went on for about 30 secs. I might be wrong, but I think he had his arms out as if to ask "why?" And further comment was that he was shaking his head. If that's true you might call it passion. From the captain though? Something is not right mate, I'll put money on it. |

... Ill have to say though.....when i saw all the subs running and jumping on Guzan made me too happy. we need that sort of spirit in the squad, where we want to win every single game. worrying thing though is we look like we are struggling to score a lot in open play. |
