Morning all. I'm having a good week so far and I hope it keeps getting better. On paper, it should. I mean, if you look at the Sunderland team, who would you take over what we have - maybe one and he isn't playing tonight. Surely this is next round time?
Would you put money on it though? I'm not sure yet, although I suspect I will, because I'm a sucker like that although I might wait until the I've seen the starting line up or the game has started.
I don't think O'Neill will rest anyone and I don't think he needs to if I'm going to be frank. Teams like Liverpool and Chelsea will play fairly strong teams in this tournament and they've also got Champions League where they'll be playing fairly strong teams and lets not forget the league. The best players all play 50+ games a season and you could argue that keeping them playing is an element of keeping their game up.
So, don't expect that many changes. Expect Guzan to come in so Friedel can rest his arms and knees but the team playing tonight will have to be fairly strong to win the game as Sunderland are only one point behind us in the league and have a more than decent home record so far this season.
So, the point of this post, well, we will be updating with team news as and when we get it. We are also setting up a special email address for all those travelling to the game where you can email in your images from your phone with a little bit of text and it will get automatically uploaded to the site here.
It is also, unless something really interesting happens today, going to be the place where most links get dumped and I have every intention of dumping loads today as the project I am working on is waiting for some translations before I can really do anything, if I am going to work, it is very much going to be work that I don't need to be doing and only to make myself look like I'm working, which while I used to be very good at that, isn't something I need to do on this project in my little office all by myself.
Yes, I'm a bit bored. So, team news, links and anything else I can find that is remotely interesting and lets not forget the email address where you will be able to email in your images. All you have to do is take a photo with your phone and email site@ the this domain name, thevillablog.co.uk - the image will then get picked up by the server and we will then approve the image before publishing.

Its a game we should win if Bent is out, but our inability to boss teams means that it'll be more rearguard heroics from Dunne, Collins, and Cuellar. Obviously settle for one nil but we have a poor record against teams managed by Steve Bruce so it'll be tough. Get Nigel back in, Sidwell can do with a rest and can think about his rash challenge, although I think saying he lost us three points is harsh, he had a rush of blood and it was a great turn by Kightly. NRC needs to boss this, if he doesn't we will probably lose. He has a good chance without Cattermole in the side and should rule the roost in the middle. Get your boot in Nige and win this for us like you did at Anfield. If he doesn't he may lose his place to Sidwell on a more permanent basis, maybe even to Delph if he plays well tonight. I think Luke Young should get a game, Cuellar may not deserve to lose his place but Luke needs match fitness and this is a good opportunity, he is good enough to come straight in to a game of this size and not be overawed. Cuellar can play in the next league game, but Young needs this. |

All the "oh-so-close" crosses, etc., don't count, and we rarely run onto something outside the box and let fly. We have one game plan and that is it. We get it out wide quickly and they lauch it into the box. That gives the CM very little time to actually get up and support(Would you run 50 yards if you knew they aren't going to pass it to you anyway?). If he hadn't come back and scored so many after returning from 'injury' last season i think MON had him earmarked for the door in the summer. We have some players with great strikes on them, I wish they'd just have a go more. The keeper might spill it or it might get deflected or bounce oddly (Drogba against us last week). Worth a shot if you ask me. I put it down to a lack of confidence. Badger, I'd like to see where Davies would have finished if he'd played every game like Cuellar. I think you do him a disservice. He had a blinder against Pool. |

... i think Carew has problems with anger management. He doesn't shout and argue, but I think he sulks. If he gets called for a foul early doors, then you can be fairly sure that for the rest of the game when the ball comes to him there will be a free kick one way or the other. Like someone else said, a goal or even a biased ref could sort this out. Or he could be taught not to sulk. |

... Davies was very inconsistent. At times he'd be fairly solid, but there were moments when he just put in absolute howlers. His main problem is he has no confidence whatsoever with the ball at his feet. He panics. He'll spray the ball around left, right and centre, a lot of the time to the opposition. When Davies had the ball, I always got the feeling that Vincent Price had just whispered in his ear "Curtis, they're coming for you". Hilarity would ensue. James Collins on the other hand is the polar opposite. I've never seen a central defender more composed and calm on the ball. It shows because Collins is more than a decent passer of the ball. He'll even connect on a long range cross-field ball every so often too. Collins has been rock solid so far. Davies would every so often be a wet lettuce. That's what we can't afford. |
