Just had a call to tell me the match is off so if you are on your way or about to leave, stop. There was quite a bit of snow in Blackburn last night and while they could have played the match, after talking with the local Police, it was decided that is was best all round if the match was called off.
So, this isn't nice, but the players do get an extra long rest now and can prepare for the match against Wigan at the weekend.
So, like I said, it isn't nice but it also means we have a free night. A night of little stress and a night of a beer or two. but if you know someone driving up to the game, it might be nice if you sent an SMS just to let them know.
I'm off outside as I have a feeling nothing will be happening in the transfer window.

... Damian, I trust you assume in your example that we will go on a similar losing streak to that of last season. The thing is if we consistently continue to pick up points between the end of february and the end of may as we have all season, the likliehood is we will finish with a better points tally than last season. Now, even if that is not good enough to get us better than sixth you must agree that there has been an improvement. Couple that with a Carling cup final and i'd say that was a reasonable season and an improvement on last, considering we've had to contend with Laursen's retirement and the departure of Gareth Barry. My point is, you seem to be assuming that this team is going to drop as many points in march as it did last year and I don't think we will. If we finish strongly we have every chance of being right up there at the end of the season. We went on a steak of 4 points from 9 games and I can't see that happening again. I know we lost to the likes of Chelsea, Liverpool and Man U, but we also lost games against Spurs and Man City which will be big fixtures during the run in. We drew with Stoke, Everton, West Ham and Bolton before we nicked a win against Hull. These are all games we are capable of winning this year, including City and Spurs and if we can't beat them then we aren't good enough to finish above them and have to improve. The thing is I think we can, I believe. Wins against the lesser lot would have seen 4 points become 12 and we'd have finished with 70 points, 2 points behind Arse and in fifth place. The league is much tighter this season and i'd expect a lower points tally all round at the top of the table and 70 points this season may be enough to get top four. There is every reason to be optimistic and until we really do blow it i'm happy to believe. |

Good one this. I've noticed it seems a 50/50 split amongst people who comment about him. Whilst I don't think he's playing as well as last year on the whole, he has seemed pretty composed to me. Well, at least when you compare to the rest of our team. He seems to tire quicker to me though. Perhaps his age is going to catch up with him a bit too quickly? He also breaks up play really well and provides fantastic cover for our defence. Have a look on the guardian chalk boards if you don't believe me. Its the same story week in week out. You hardly notice him in the game but his impact is massive. He keeps possession and knits play together. We just need a more attacking version to offer the same thing for our forwards. |

... I quietly gulp at the thought of petrov being out for a while. The thought of sidders and coker being our 2 in central midfield is not a pretty one. We `d have to play 4-5-1 or else we`d never retain the ball. I`d venture that we could n`t play milner alongside one of them in the middle either. We`d get overwhelmed. Concede so much possession even our defence would struggle to cope. I`d like an able deputy for petrov. Parker or similar quality would be nice. He`s an important player for us, that`s for sure. |

... Get Kenwyne in and sell Carew to some Kebab eating Turkish side in the summer. He's getting on and too inconsistent. £10m for Jones is a snip, £15m is pushing it, but if MON wants him he'll pay it. It'll be the best thing he ever does if he signs for us. He won't get 20 goals a season, but he is a perfect long term replacement for Carew and I think he could turn out to be a very dangerous striker in the next few years. He needs to sort his application out. He needs balls being whipped into the box rather than having balls slotted in behind for him like Reid does. We have Gabby to do that. Training with Heskey will improve Jones as a player, but MoN will probably convert him into a RB or LW ![]() ![]() ![]() |

... With Jones, I would want to know how hard he's willing to work. Not that it would take much to top Carew in that department. But I do think he'd put himself about more than JC. So, swapping like for like, I'd prefer Jones. Personally, although it doesn't seem to be MON's preference, I'd like a smaller, quicker player pairing with Gabby, a Bellamy type, Defoe, etc. Petrov is quality. However, some players do lose it overnight, others have a more gradual decline. I'm not sure how long he'll stay at the top level. He would look better in a five-man midfield with better control and creativity. He's got a tough job in our current set-up. With Milner's engine and attitude, I could see him and Delph doing a nice job in Petrov's absence. |

He can play off the last man, his holding up has improved. Question is, what kind of striker dovetails with that ? It looks like mons preferred option is a big man who can definately hold the ball up and bring nippy wingers and attack minded players in to play. ... I have watched Beckford alot over the last couple of seasons and the guy knows where the goal is, just like at the weekend against manure, in my opinion he would scare defenders, they would back off him and he can finish, hes also a bit of a poacher, more so than gabby, dont get me wrong gabby has quality but taking a gamble and reading flick ons is'nt one of them. Beckford is very confident, and quite recently i watched him at my home town club Kettering town in the last round of the f.a cup. i think that is a good test for a player like him, so many times you see class strikers fail against lower league opposition and he was very good, good movement and showed commitment and a great attitude when things wer'nt going his way, and in the end it payed off in both legs. If he has players like we have supplying him he'll think he is in heaven, he could be the 20 goal a season man weve been looking for at a good price. i hope this happens, plus think of him as a replacement for Harewood. |

... Good morning, been up longer than HH. Beckford would be really cheap. He would not be 1st to rise 2 divs and succeed. He has been class for 3 seasons, now. I say sell Marlon and use money for JB. JB will be cheap, 2 things to influence him, Delph being here and Grayson being former Villan. If we truly have aspirations, it has to be David Villa. Likelihood of that happening is about same as Megan dating one of us BTW, Fergie is not ugly, all those types wear lots of makeup. This league is tough, ask Roy Hodgsen, he has just lost 2 of his best players to injury. Threadbare squad there. We will need a lot of ours over the next while. Good to see Weimann has signed an extension. He is top scorer for reserves, who top their league DVN |

... People keep misunderstanding me when I talk about Kenwyne Jones. I see him as a long term fixture if we sign him, training with Heskey to develop his game and turning him into a perfect replacement and a perfect foil for Gabby who can be our 20 goals a season striker. Jones for £10-15m in the window would be lovely. Beckford isn't that good. He played in the championship and did sod all and now they're in league one he's scoring for fun...so what. I saw his goal against Man U and his first touch was akin to that of a rap*st, that chance could have bben so much easier and he fluked it. If he does end up at Villa I hope he costs no more than £5m. I'll think of it as upgrading Harewood. Next season i'd like to see our four strikers as Heskey, Jones, Gabby and Delfouneso. I believe Gabby is as dangerous on the break as someone like Bent and I think Jones, with some coaching could show a lot of people what a great finisher he is. Honestly chaps try and find some footage of Kenwyne Jones scoring goals, you'll find some good finishes. Delph is class, and he'll be a regular-ish next season. I called it ages ago. Milner and Petrov and Delph and Reo Coker as towo alternative CM pairings. This window i'd like Parker and Jones in and Salifou, Gardner, Harewood, Osbourne and Shorey out. The Gareth Bale link is interesting, can't see spurs letting him go and do we need him? Has Willie had another injury setback? heskeyshead Friedel, Dunne, Petrov, Milner, Gabby is a pretty good spine if you ask me. A world class International keeper who has been doing it for years, Irelands Vice captain and former four time club player of the season in the hardest league in the world, former Bulgaria International Captain, the future of Englands midfield and one of the hottest young strikers in the EPL (Wenger wants him). Not bad imo |

Petrov could play for any club in the top four on the eveidence of last season although his legs seem to be going late in games. Milner and Gabby can be anything they want to be. Those two could be huge huge players of the future. Imagine if they both get on the plane to SA and Rooney gets a knock. Gabby could end up knocking in three goals and that's all it would take to drag him kicking and screaming into the public eye. Likewise with Milner, remember they're both only 22/23 |

...Next season i'd like to see our four strikers as Heskey, Jones, Gabby and Delfouneso Im going to have to disagree with you again JPA for a change. That would only push us further down the wrong path of long ball football. None of the strikers you have in that list are any more then average with the ball at their feet(From the few games Delfouneso has played he has looked like a great finisher but a bit laboured with the ball at his feet to be honest). We need some skill. We need a guy who can take a ball and control in an instance even under pressure and turn and have vision to bring others into play at the right time and link up with the midfield. We need a guy who can do that little bit of magic. We need options and right now we lack that option and it is holding us back and i just don't see Jones as the way forward unless we also lose Heskey and bring in a player like Jonanvic/Tuncay etc. Next season we need to increase possesion to move on and that means less and less long ball up to the front men. |
Mike Carter
said:

... I agree JPA, both Milner and Gabby could potentially become very high quality players. It seems more likely for Milner to be honest, as Gabby seems to lack a few fundamental skills to be a top class striker. Whether he learns them or not we'll see, but I think it's just a case of not being blessed with them to be honest. Petrov I don't think would get near any of the big 4 at the moment. On last season's form, perhaps he might make the bench for United as they seem to lack top quality central midfielders, though if Hargreaves was fit that wouldn't be the case so much. |
Adrian Kilgallon
said:
...Gabby seems to lack a few fundamental skills to be a top class striker I agree with this. But he can be utilised far better then we currently are doing. If he was playing for a club like Arsenal with the likes of Fabregas threading through balls for him to run directly on goal he could be unstopable if he learned how to finish when he has time to think about it. He will never be world class though as he does lack the natural skills to be that good but he can be a very good striker. |

...Gabby seems to lack a few fundamental skills to be a top class striker. I don't see him as a finisher like Defoe, he has more of Michael Owen about him. Not a natural goal scorer, but lightning quick and hi decision making is improving with every game. I really wouldn't be surprised to see Gab start hitting 20 a season quite regularly over the next five years. ak, If Gabby scores 20 and the other three get twenty between them I can't see the problem. I think a player in the midfield like Jovanovic or Krasic from CSKA would be more important. We've seen how, with the introduction of Milner the ball hasn't been bypassing CM as much. With a skillful attacking option there I don't believe we need much else up front. Swap Carew for JOnes and promote Delfouneso. I would like to see Keane at Villa, but is he still that good? |

...If Gabby scores 20 and the other three get twenty between them I can't see the problem I just think if we have another type of dtriker we would get more from Gabby and also we would get more goals from the midfield also as they would be better at holding the ball up and creating space and chances for others. Just look at Van Persie and how he links up with the Arsenal midfield as the perfect example. There midfielders score a lot of goals. I don't think you just say that a strijer is just there to score. They have to be able to hold it up and get more invloved in the interplay and i just feel we are not really as good as the top 4 with this regards and this is a reason why we can't keep the ball as well as others. No point having a play maker in the CN if their is nobody up top equally as bright and on the same wave length. Jonovic would be more of a striker in the hole then the play maker. I would like to see Keane at Villa, but is he still that good? Im a bit unsure myself but he was good againest France a few months ago. He seesm to take a while to bed into clubs so he would need time. But Keane's game is more about intelligence then anything else so i think there is still a few more good years in him. Def worth a shot if price is right. |

Rarely works out when a player of that age makes the jump, think back to Guy Wittingham, 50+ goals in the championship and couldn't cut it in the premiership. Still say get rid of Heskey, buy Jones from Sunderland, Big John on the bench, and Fonzy as fourth choice. Anyone who says get rid of Carew and keep Heskey is deluded. |

...ak, do you see what I mean? Carew but with pace and he's a lot more athletic. A perfect replacement imo I do but i don't think we need a Heskey and a Jones to be honest. I think Heskey came in because MON was planning to get shot of Carew in the summer but he couldn't becasue of the way he came back after his 'injury' and scored so many goals. For me its either get rid of both Heskey and Carew and bring Jones in or nothing. One lump is enough at any club. As for Kris Boyd. If MON goes for him my doubts on the man will return big time. Im sorry but i have seen a lot of Scottish football and the old firm are playing teams that would be about mid table in league one (not the championship, league bloody one). Yes he is cheap. So what. I would prefer to put his transfer fee towards paying big wages for a player with actual ability then wasting it on this guy who will sit on our bench before being left go again to someone ike Norwich. The guy is a poacher. Do we create that many chances? No. Can we afford another striker who lacks ability on the ball? No. Will he make in down here? No. Like i said just look at Antony Stokes as a yard stick. The guy couldn't score in the championship never mind the PL and he scores every week up there. Heskey would probably score every week up there. He also has a very bad attitude which many on here are always bringing up regarding foreign players without any eveidence. The guy has fallen out with both his club and country over the last 2 years. Just the thought of this guy being linked to us is making me livid. |

...Anyone who says get rid of Carew and keep Heskey is deluded. I think it is Carew who is deluded. Heskey works harder and is a much better strike partner for Gabby. I'm not convinced by Carew's application and attitude to training. He goes missing far too often and I think Heskey is a more valuable player. Jones will get more goals than Carew I have no doubt about, but I think it would be imperative to have Jones and Heskey training together. Carew has been very hit and miss his whole career. Flashes of brilliance but no consistency. At least you know what you're getting with Bruno. |

... The problem on the Carew v Heskey front is Carew is far and away a better goalscorer. Heskey might work harder, track back and help out in midfield, and Carew might be a lazy bastard who relies fully on good service - but he does scores goals. As a striker, isn't that what matters? |
John Samuels

...The guy is a poacher. Do we create that many chances? No.I think you'd be surprised how many goals someone can get just by being in the right place at the right time. He might compliment all the hard work Gabby does in the channels. I think it's fair to assume that MoN is keeping an eye out in case we have a striker leave and the media are linking us with everyone available. As for Heskey, he surely has only got a season or two left at this level and I'd be happy for him to stay, picking up a modest amount of appearances and providing back up and competition for someone like jones. I am old school. I believe you need two players in every position and I like a big un and a litle un up front. Jones and Heskey would be great. Gabby and someone else (Boyd, Keane, Moses, whoever really) and Delfouneso is going to start making an impact soon I can feel it. |

I think you get much much more out of Gabby when Heskey plays and this is why he was brought in. If Carew goes missing which he does every other game then it makes Gabby's life that much harder. Heskey links with the midfield better and if Ash, Milly and Stu are overlapping they are going to get goals that wouldn't be available with Carew in the side. I know Carew is popular because he gets a few goals, but I honestly believe Emile is better for the team. |
