Pre-season sorted: Peace Cup in Spain from July 24th

Hands up, I had no real idea about this tournament so I've been off reading up and trying to learn as much as possible in a short space of time and the best site is the official Peace Cup site, so you can always visit it yourself.

What is this tournament though and does it mean we can win some silverware? Well, it's a football tournament held every two years and it was originally set up to promote world peace.

For us to win some silverware, against teams like Juventus and Real Madrid, we'll need to win five games, it is possible, but chances are we'll get to the semi-finals and Martin O'Neill will rest players for the league season coming up.

I'm only joking. It's not a serious tournament, it's a pre-season warm up tournament used to promote something positive and should be a good place for the players get pick up match fitness, playing against some quality players.

As it stands now, apart from Juventus and Real Madird, the other teams that have been confirmed are Liga de Quito, F.C. Porto, Olympique Lyonnais and Sevilla but the Wiki page for this event also have Liverpool and Ajax down, although that isn't confirmed on the Peace Cup website, but neither are we.

Either way, it should be a good event and maybe we'll see a match against Mellberg and if Liverpool are in, maybe Barry will be playing against us, or maybe not.

It will be interesting though and one to follow and I have a feeling a few will be travelling out, it would be a great time to book your summer holiday now, without telling the wife the real reason.

Getting off the subject slightly .Do you think Mon uses so many english players because he wants to impress the FA and be the next England manager

Great to have a proper pre-season for once! High profile opposition, enjoyment for the players and the fans, and a tough workout with no intertoto. Sounds good to me. smilies/cool.gif

New players? July? Come off it Damian, MoN doesn't work that fast. I can see it now; no signings before we head out there, rumours a-plenty after every interview with yer man when he praises Manuel This and Carlos That, then we come home to find that we've re-signed Smiler and Tommy.

and this cup looks pretty interesting. if it was held anywhere but Spain in that time of year, i'd go. But i'd prefer not to die in the heat. God knows how the players will stay standing.

I think this is a good idea.
Would be great experince for the lads, and I good chance to test any potential new signings MON has lined up by that time...

Ah okay then, it's a test for the younger lads and the fringe players then smilies/tongue.gif ?

I think it's a good idea. Gets the Villa name out there that little bit more too I suppose.
Little nervous about this run-in to the season. I'm hoping MON drops Hesk and plays Carew as a lone striker. Bring Gardner [or Sidders] in and go from there.

What happened to NRC ? When was the last time he played centre mid?

Btw, just testin to see if this avatar thing works smilies/smiley.gif.
