David O'Leary is probably a nice guy that you can tell to shut up if he starts acting like a twat but in this interview he comes across as a twat and you've just got to read it to see what he comes out with next so there is no 'shut up twat' because well, he's probably playing golf somewhere.
The interview really is quite embarrassing for him and I can't see it doing him any favours. Apart from coming across as the twat we all know him to be, he comes across as a cocky twat at the same time and I don't think people are going to like this side about him. One bit that made me chuckle was this bit coming up.
I saw Capello at the soccer writers’ function the other week and he came down from the top table and said “when are you bloody getting back in the game?” It was nice getting that from Capello. A lot of them know that you’re too good to be out of it. That’s not me trying to big myself up. People in the game know how difficult Doug Ellis and Aston Villa was.
You see, the thing is, Capello is still struggling with English and you can understand why O'Leary misunderstood him but he is right, people in the game know how difficult it is to work with Ellis but people also know what happened with O'Leary, which is the real reason why he is out of work.
In his first full season at Leeds he finished 3rd, the following season was fourth and his last season was fifth. His first season at Villa, with new manager syndrome, was sixth. Do you see the trend here? His second season we dropped further and his last season he also got worse again. Bottom line; he couldn't do it with money and he couldn't do it without money. In fact, all that happened was without the money the decline was faster, which sort of suggests Ellis was right to not give him any.
But go read the interview here, it will brighten you day.
But moving on to signings. They are going to happen this week if you believe the general feeling that July 1st brings and it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if it is true. I was speaking to someone a little earlier and he reckons there is going to be a signing that will raise a few eyebrows.
You all know my views on Lerner so I'm not going to repeat myself but I will say I hope he doesn't prove me right by making just the one signing to appease fans. We need three of those signings this summer to likely stand still, two more if we are even hoping to challenge for top four.
Serious money need to be spent this summer on three serious players. Anything less than that will show that Lerner isn't really capable of doing the job and then we will have something else to worry about.
The signings are coming though and we know money is available. It's just a case of how much is actually available and how well it is spent. We will know fairly soon as the players are back fro pre-season any day now.
Lastly today, before I go get some breakfast, the Hleb rumour is getting thrown about again and while I think he is a decent player, I think it would be mad to pay anything close to the £11mn. price tag that the speculation suggests for a 28 year old. Pay it for a 23 year old for sure, but not for a player that has no resale potential.
Hleb is a good player and it's not my money but if there is no value in the player, it is just a waste and surely there are better prospects we could be looking at for similar money?
Right, breakfast and you never know, maybe the club will announce a press conference of sorts for Friday. You never know.

... I think you read into the age thing in quite a strange way Damian. I think £11m for a good player is worth it whether he's 28 or not. He's still got 4-odd years left in him and we really don't need to be bothered about resale value because we're not a selling club. We need to get the players in who can do a job now and replace them when that time comes. As it happens I don't really rate Hleb anyway so I wouldn't pay £11m for him. But the point raised about Tim Borowski did surprise me a lot, as £5m for him would be a wonderful piece of business. |

Has been great for Standard making the Belgium league team of the season a few times. Saw him last night, looked quality, even against the worlds finest attacking force. Hes quick, strong....and out of contract I hear! Beckham would be a fantastic coup. Theres no better way to raise our profile and bring in better players (he could teach Milner how to cross too!) Had a great time in Milan but a change of management could change all that. I could see him working with MON and with our American connections...you never know! I love the fact that Capello and Jose have been patronisingly charitable to him, and he seems to think it's because he's the dog's scrotum. Absolute twat. As far as a good signing, Joe Cole is beyond us, but would be an insane signing. Hleb would be a notch down from Cole, but still beyond us. He wouldn't come to us for all the rubels in Belarus. We'll be lucky with Bentley...anything beyond that is probably dreaming. A swap for Ash with Joe Cole would suit me...Joe Cole is a better player in my eyes, by far. I like him and I think he's a very intelligent player. He's not just an out and out striker, but he is a good finisher. The thing with MLS players is that you have to negotiate with the league if you want a player. MLS holds all player registrations for those playing in the U.S. Clubs do have a say but in the end, the league decides the outcome. |

There has been talk about Ash being involved in a swap deal but I can't see that happening either, surely MON isn't going to release anyone else unless stupid money is involved. I have a feeling the eyebrow raiser will be Owen, announced alongside Bentley on Wednesday. n experienced defender will follow shortly after + maybe Naughton and Huddlestone and that will be that. ... I have read a lot of fashionably nasty things said about DOL on this site but very few facts that stand up to scrutiny. It's obvious people didn't like DOL, he's not my flavour of the month either - but he doesn't deserve the slagging he gets. Unfortunately at this club it has become clear to me over the years that what counts is style over substance, fantasy over reallity. I guess that might be common at a lot of clubs with once great histories. Men of ambition at Villa get slated. McMahon, Staunton, York, Southgate, Ugo etc. MON got slated because he dared to believe we could finish 4th and sacrificed the UEFA spot for it. DOL had ambition and a good managerial record at Leeds and Villa. Sometimes when you have ambition you are not prepared to settle for less. Fans see that as betrayal - they would rather have someone come out to massage their fragile collective egos with cheap meaningless tattle about how great the club is. Back to DOL - what did he do as a manager to make him such a scapegoat? The fact of the matter is that under Graham Tayler the previous year we were awfull and very lucky not to be relegated - in the same way that we were lucky to be promoted under Taylor all those years ago. DOL was sacked because he was caught out organising effectively rebellion against Ellis - unfortunately most fans did not ever have the balls to follow his lead (I doff my cap here to Damian). |

Those are the facts". We had a good 1st season under him (6th) and then we slipped further down the table and even flirted with relegation in his final season. MON, while he may not have bettered 6th yet at least is moving in the right direction ( up the table) and the football, on the whole, we play now is a massive improvement. He loves a bit of name dropping as well old DOL: "Jose recommended me for a really big job" & "Capello came down from the top table and asked 'when are you getting back in the bloody game?' Hilarious stuff, I rate Dermot O'leary's manegerial skills higher than DOL. |

The criticism at the time, if you remember, was DOL could be only a ‘success’ when spending, and he was keen to banish such criticism. Everybody knew how frugal Ellis was, DOL certainly new. So what did achieve at Villa? – 6th league pos (Halo effect and unsustainable), player unrest, , angry fans, angry chairmen, coaching staff leaving. His job was to manage what he was given– he failed at Villa, he failed at Leeds. MON is 10 times the manager DOL will ever be. His job definitely wasn’t to instigate fan/ chairmen rebellions… |

... Not picking sides here but with the money O'Leary had at Leeds and when he had it, most inept managers would have gotten them a third place finish. The problem with O'Leary was/is he wasn't liked by the players and the first season was, like so many managers 'new manager syndrome'. Okay, I hear you say that he was already at Leeds and he was, so that to some extent is not valid, but when George Graham left was when Leeds really got the money and O'Leary brought in so many players. He took them from third to fifth in consecutive seasons. He took the club backwards. Had O'Neill been at Leeds then I fancy they would have won the league, but we'll never know. I know one thing for sure, more people dislike O'Leary than like him. |

... Personally i put getting a team like Leeds to a champions league semi final as a far higher achievment then winning the mickey mouse cup or getting to a UEFA cup final. In fact im sure MON could not even win one away game in all his years in charge of Celtic in the champions league. DOL does come accross as a total prat in that interview but i still think he did an equally good job under far more difficult circumstances and does not deserve the huge abuse he gets. |

... You need people skills to be a good manager. DOL has none, thats why everyone thinks hes a cock! In contrast it is MON's biggest strength. DOL made some good signings but he couldn't keep them happy. MON has done just as well in the transfer market and they all seem to love him! Given time, support and a few of Randy's dollars and he will transform his team in to a sustainable PL and european force. DOL would have turned his bunch of misfits into a championship yoyo club (lucky Deadly Doug stopped him before he did!) Keep the faith! ... A little off the point of specific signings but in the general area, I though people might be interested in seeing how much we have spent during the premiership - this is a link, it shows everyones net and gross spend: http://transferleague.co.uk/ Quite interesting to look at the Net spends - I wonder if the United Net includes the Ronaldo sale cus that affects their figures a little! What this does show is that there is only 1 great manager in the league - Wenger. Whatever anyone thinks of him or Arsenal, he has managed to win the Premiership spending less than us, his Net spend is so little that he could manage Burnley and have the same players (Yes I do realise that London and Arsenal are more attractive to players than Burnley, but you get the point i'm making). I also never really looked at net spends before - always what a team spent bringing them in, it deffinetly changes things when you look at net spend, as Top teams have sold players for top money (Beckham etc) at United. Barry is our first big sale since Yorke. |

So if you look at his buys he did quite well! I think with the money that mon has spent anybody even a blind man would have got us 6th place! ... I think Carlos Tevez is much more likely to go back to West Ham than he would come to us. I've decided that after thinking that Damo was living in a dream world when he spoke of the figures he wanted us to spend and the players we should have bought, he's actually entirely right. We'll consolidate mid table for many more years with the scrimping that MON is doing, but progress is impossible in the modern game without Man City like money. They went out and bought Robinho with ridiculous money, and now they're able to attract big names. They're going to finish above us next year. We can't attract Tevez, we can't attract Joe Cole, we'll be lucky to attract Michael Owen at this rate...the only chance we have is to buy good young talent who want to make a name...the Defours of the world perhaps. I'm depressed now at the thought that we're going to be left in the dust because we just can't compete financially...is this what football is meant to be about? |

... To be honest i hope we don't get Tevez(and im pretty sure e won't be getting him also). He is vastly over priced and it would surely eat up most of our summer budget and there are far more pressing area's of the team that need to be improved first. I think we could get by with what we have up front it's the defense and Mid that badly need to improved. No point having a top class striker (which i actually don't think Tevez is as his first touch is brutal for a so called world class footballer which is why SAF wouldn't pay the price for him) if the midfield and defense is crap behind him. You have to build from the back. |

... In response to that O'leary comment, i don't think that MON has had a lot more than O'Leary ever had, when you take into account the way that the market has inflated. If you think all teams start with £40mil extra each season, i really don't think MON has been spoilt with money. With regards Tevez, i don't think money is playing as much of a factor as the papers would have us believe, but i can't see him wanting to play for a team outside of Champs league...he has ambitions and he and Mascherano were already warned by Argentina that they had to play for a better team than West Ham when they were there. O'leary is also forgetting that MON has got us all talking about champions league football, and we're actually quite disapointed that we didn't finish in the top 4 last season. When we finished 6th under O'Leary, all we could say was that it was an achievement to finish in the top 6 and never even mentioned champions league! |

Seeing as it's obvious MON isn't going to splash all the kitty on one player, would it be fair to say we're going to spend serious dough once again this summer? ... I can only assume that that is that guy's conjecture, simply because we have £12million from the Barry transfer. But it does kind of make sense. Man City do not need him, and I cannot fathom why they'd want him with the amount of midfielders they have...I counted up their squad today, and they have as many goalkeepers and defenders as we do in our entire squad practically...They have 19 and I counted only 19 players who would play in the league for us at the moment. We only have a full squad of 25 to their 41, and that's with the likes of Bannan, Albrighton et al. Surely Bolton wouldn't be above us in the pecking order, what with no euro football and a shite team all round. Arsenal could get him if they wanted him, but the general word around the water cooler is that Melo is top of their list. Which leaves us. If he's 100% going to play in the prem next year, it gives us a good chance. |

Last year the OS did a list of all the players we'd been linked with and it was laughable, something like 120 players... I mean what the f**k???? I'm really lowering my expectation levels this transfer window so i don't end up sat in a corner rocking like a crazed freak - totally out of choice and not because I can't see us signing anyone but because I don't want to listen to the hype like everyone else who gets sucked in and given false hope by the media, the media are the real enemy here, not Mon! All these lists people keep making are pointless, I want this player and that player, pointless!!! and having watched myself and others do it for about three seasons on here I've finally realised you are going to end up the mug if you feed into these links and gossip! As soon as the said player goes elsewhere it's suddenly the end of the world - but who's to say mon actually wanted him anyway, the sun? the mirror?? Please! Until a player signs there is no point even commenting! |

... OK, I see it's been done...! I think it'd be a very decent move. A different type of forward and more importantly, competition for places.. |

... Hey Fitzy, are you sure you aren't confusing Tuncay with Tudgay??? Seriously, I'd take Tuncay as an option. He plays all over the top end and most importantly, he's inventive, from what I've seen. Not at the money that's been mentioned though. Swap for Gardner perhaps??? |

... I know who i want... Marcus Berg. That kid looks the full package! http://www.sport.co.uk/news/Football/22452/Aston_Villa_poised_to_make_move_for_Taison.aspx ^^^^ thats fairly interesting. Unfortunately though, no hope on it happenning! Cant wait for July 1st, even though i dont have a clue why its such a big deal! |

... I'd be pleased if we sign Veloso (the kid is outstanding) but to be honest I think unless we sign a playmaker, is Veloso just going to be challenging Stan for the holding role? Or are we going to see Stan back in the same role he was at Celtic? Either way, I'd be glad if we got Veloso - and nicked Moutinho while we were at it from Sporting. The latter is more of a play maker than MV. As for Miguel (the Valencia right back), we were linked to him last year and nothing came of it... that said, we were linked to Bentley last year and that seems like it's nailed on... Can we sign a decent striker too to provide some sort of competition? With all due respect Heskey isn't really competition enough for Big John. Plus besides that we only (really) have Gabby. I know we have the Fonz but he's hardly the finished article yet. Anybody wish we had somebody in the style of JPA nowdays? |

... why is it that Villa are always linked or looking to buy or are interested and various other versions of that. Yet a club like Wolves? straight in linked one day and bought the next. they have just bought what we are led to believe were two of our targets? Doyle and the foreign bloke. we are like females !!! we go round and round looking for the best bargain and when we cant find it or want to go back to the first thing we looked at its gone !!!!!!! some decisions would be good MON please !!!!!!! |

... I think that Hleb would be a ideal attaking midfielder for us this season, i cant understand that some people are saying that he is'nt as good as Joe Cole, get real people he had the skills to get picked up by Barca so that should say how good he is and would be well worth a place in the villa team. ![]() ![]() |

i think if we get a really exciting signing that we will still bring in the 4r5 more decent squad players we need especially as O’Neill wouldn’t advise butting all his budget in one basket....
