I don't know where to begin so I'll start with something quite controversial; we need The Clowns in this league. Six points every season is the perfect gift and they seem to want to give it every season now. It's like the toll the have to pay to be in this league and they hand it over willingly.
Maybe it isn't controversial and I am sure we will have a bad day soon, although we had a pretty awful day yesterday and we still won - it was like we couldn't give it away and Friedel had more to do yesterday than I remember having him to do in any game this season - it just goes to show we couldn't give it away against them.
I don't want to go on about The Clowns as all publicity is basically that, publicity, but let's just take a moment today, if you meet a Clown, to say thanks. Six points is the perfect gift and we should be able to accept this gift every season.
James Milner: Young Player of the Year
He beat Fabregas and Rooney to the award and yes, this is the same one that Webcam won last year and yes, we will all hope his next season doesn't end up like the one Webcam has had this time out and I actually don't think it will and anyway, Barcelona, Real Madrid and Inter Milan are all interested in Webcam now and you never know, they might also be interested in Milly this time next season if he has an average season too.
Back to Milly and since he has gone into the middle of the field he has gone from someone that wouldn't have got into my side to the first name down and when that happens - a player goes from nothing to something nearly irreplaceable, then stand up Mr Milner and take the applause, you deserve it.
Team of the Season
Moving on and we are going to include Milly in this, but Ricardo Dunne gets a mention today too, because he got into the team of the season. This is, as is the player of the year award, a special award, as it is voted for by other players and if you win it or get in, it is basically a nod from your word colleagues.
Well, Milly won the award and got into the team of the year, as did Dunne. The full team is below.
- Joe Hart, The Clowns
- Branislav Ivanovic, Chelsea
- Richard Dunne, Aston Villa
- Thomas Vermaelen, Arsenal
- Patrice Evra, Manchester United
- Antonio Valencia, Manchester United
- James Milner, Aston Villa
- Darren Fletcher, Manchester United
- Cesc Fabregas, Arsenal
- Didier Drogba, Chelsea
- Wayne Rooney, Manchester United
It's nice and now as long as results go our way, we will also finish fifth. Fifth is progress and progress is good. Progress means more money this summer because the manager will have proven more money and he can progress. More money means I think we can challenge for third nest season.
Monday Morning Rumours
This is from yesterday, but I'm putting it down today, because it is a bit of speculation. Apparently, according to one national rag yesterday, Martin O'Neill is interested in signing Robbie Keane, Kevin Doyle, Aiden McGeady and Stephen Ireland.
He can be interested in one of those, maybe two - but all four would be too much and actually it doesn't matter because we all know O'Neill doesn't know the transfer window opens in two weeks. He think it opens in August. He won't be planning now.
Found on the Internet
Click here to see what I found on the internet - it is the match! I also found this new flag that I think you will like - James Milner and welcome to Birmingham.
Right, that is it for now. Post-mortem later and don't forget to vote for your man of the match.

... Re. this penalty - does it really matter? At the time - you wont find many people, even a Clown, that would have thought it anything other than a penalty - sure on replays we might be able to come to a different conclusion and we might not. Fact is, the penalty was given and rightly so many thought at the time. We converted it and won the game. Hindsight is a fantastic but at the time, you put 100 of us in the same place the ref is and the vast majority would have given that penalty - that is all that counts. |

Im undecided but it could be a wise move. Great win yesterday but a horrible game to watch, we should all be grateful that there is still excitment for us all so later in the season. MON is class, he has built a very solid defence, turned Milner, a former dislike of Damo, into an England certainty. Dunne will be player of the year in next awards, Milner young one. Man City will be 7th. Spurs have to win 2 of the 3 games (given their goal difference)no easy task - i fancy they would take bolton, lose to man city, taking it to the wire - I find relageted teams tend to play surprisingly well for the last match if they can make a differenc (ie prevent spurs taking 4th) as they really have nothing to lose but can gain a bit of a consolation, so a draw would do it. The food is excellent, the service is shit but it's really interesting to talk to the ex players roaming the dining room. I was told yesterday that Lerner wants to fund the expansion of the stadium by selling players. I couldn't help thinking that this would be a disaster. We aren't filling the stadium week in week out so can you imagine a 55,000 capacity stadium with all those empty seats because we haven't got our star players. That worried me. What a great day yesterday though. Their fans are truly repulsive and it serves them right that they got an unlucky penalty decision. Our magnificent stadium was full of great banners. Villa Stella Balti etc. Did you see their pathetic, solitary banner in appalling handwriting? I could barely read it but it said "Danny is a grass" I thought that banner spoke volumes for the high percentage of underclass, chav criminals that support them. |

I love VP for all that it is today, but to compete with the bigger clubs it's an area that we can improve whilst retaining the heart and soul of what is Villa. We've managed to do this well over the years with improvements to all the stands but to fill the corners and increase the capacity would be amazing. ... Missed the game yesterday but just watched it on Sky+. Was a typical derby and to be honest I expected a draw akin to the Wolves game. However, the win was fantastic and I was impressed with the application of both teams. As for the penalty, while I understand the remonstrations of the Blues fans / players, I agree with Poll in the Daily Mail article. Just because the ball was touched does not justify a foul. It must be a telling touch on the ball which prevents the goal scoring opportunity rather than a telling touch on the player. Despite the suggestions that we will only show progress if we finish 5th, I think it is clear we have progressed. For starters we are still in the mix with 2/3 games to go rather than being out of it with 2 months to go. On top of that we have contested a domestic cup final, a domestic cup semi final, have both reserve and academy teams in cup final /play offs and to top it off we have won a trophy this year, the Peace Cup. Ok it is a friendly competition, but do not United treat the World Club cup seriously despite its Mickey Mouse nature and are not Charity/ Community shield wins celebrated by clubs. Winning trophies is winning trophies, success breeds success and all appearances in such games helps to raise the clubs profile in Europe / world. As for selling Ashley Young. Sheer insanity; for a player who is "overrated" and who has been having a "poor" season; he has scored 9 goals (equalling his best haul) and has 16 Assists (1 less than his best total) with 2 games yet to play. If he scores 1 goal against either City or BBurn he will get into double figures for the first time at Villa. To use a topical example Antonio Valencia has been named in the Team Of The Year for this season, his Premier League stats stand at 5 Goals and 9 Assists, Ashley Young has 5 Goals and 10 Assists. Young may not have appeared to be as influential this season, but maybe that is because he has had help from other players. |

... Doubledown how many crosses do you think Ashley has attepmted during the season to get those 10 assits? I bet he has probably put in over 500 at least. I like him but there are better out there then him and if we got offered stupid money for a winger who often struggles to beat defenders then surely it would make sense in cashing in and improving other area's? We need to move away from this predictable play where all we do is go wide and cross it in. This play has probabley cost us 4th as at home we are way too easily stoped by average teams. It would have been the same story yesterday bar a really poor ref decision. The guy probably won't make th England sqaud for the WC. Does not say something about him? Sorry about being harsh on the guy but i really do think he is over rated and over valued. I still think though he would be better played in the centre but MON doesn't seem to want to try this out. There are better players out there and just take a look at how much money is being spoken about when you are talking about Young? 20 odd Million. ... Ak_27 As for number of crosses, so what? He is a winger, wingers cross. With regard to his not making the England squad, do you not think that has more to do with England having in all honesty a plethora of players in his position(s)?; Walcott, SWP, Lennon, j Cole, Gerrard, Milner, Downing, Bentley, Beckham (I know Beckham will not go, but AYs chances in the England set up have been limited by Capello pandering to Beckham thus he had not had the chances when in form to have a substantial impact on games)He has the potential to be great, and If we do need to sell players I can think of a couple with less potential to improve who could be sold to raise around the same amount of money. Try John Carew, yes he does score goals, but if a 29 year old Bobby Zamora is valued at 10-15 mil with 8 league goals to his name, then a 30 year old John Carew with 9 league goals in less appearances, regard less of how long he has on his contract, should command a fee in the region of 8-10 mil. Try Carlos Cuellar; I think he is a great player, however, we have adequate cover at CB in Davies and Clarke. MON does not appear to want to play him at CB, he will not get into the Spain team playing at RB and like Arteta etc he is being ignored for international selection playing while in England. A move to Spain would suit him and as we paid 8 for him and he has proven himself to be of Premiership quality at 28 he should command a big (10+) fee. Add these big sales to a selection of middling (3-7) ones Sidwell L Young Heskey Bannan (good season for Blackpool discipline issues aside) And a host of small sales (1-3) / released players Beye Harewood (28k per week) Bouma Salifou Osburne And with maybe 10-15 mil from the chairman, we should amass quite the war-chest dont you think? |

Villa had more possession but Birmgham had more shots on target, which was dissapointing to be honest! As for the penalty, of course it was and anyway the ref gave it, so it was, end of story. We've been robbed of penalty appeals of late, just look at the Cup Final and Semi in the FA Cup. If, as some say it all works itself out at the end of the season, we'll be getting at least two more in the remaining games. It could have gone either way at the weekend but fortunately we won it. ... Great result and what a team that can bounce back from the misery of two wembley defeats and a pasting by Chelsea. Fantastic team spirit - second to none in the premier league. All down to MON. Same old thing with Ashley Young - never performs when the pressure is on. Capello in the stands, home derby, match live on sky and a packed stadium and he was truly abysmal. He was so bad and so on the periphery of the game that it was painful at times watching him. Having massive ability but not being a big game player is far worse than having not so much ability but being able to stand up and be counted when needed. It is the reason fergie loves players Fletcher and OShea. When push comes to shove, these boys turn in massive performances when it really matters despite not having half as much ability as Ashley. He seems like a good lad, can bury the lesser teams on his day but he just does not have what it takes in terms of that x factor or big time personality to be our main man. This is largely the reason why Capello won`t take him to the WC. HOWEVER, we can`t do any better than Ashley Young. If someone can name me a better player than him that would come to Villa then fair enough but even with 25 million from his sale to spend I can`t think of anyone? On this basis, I wouldn’t sell him (yet). |

Also not sure what you make of him getting 12 million for a player in the last year of his contract who has been truly awful this year. ... Ashley is a good player. I dont think he can be blamed for following the managers orders. And he's still, pardon the pun, young. I reckon he suffering from the same thing as Jimmy. He can do a job out wide but his best position is through the middle running at people and looking for one-two's with the main striker. So he should play second striker or in the hole behind Gabby and Fonz. Or in a free role doing whatever he likes. Then I think we'd see the player that he can become. It also means we'd have to leave the big lumps on the bench as impact subs. So we can then play the ball on the floor as most of us want. |

I felt it was very unprofessional of johnson to go and make that kind of tackle he should of stayed on his feet, end of. His touch on the ball was not enough to have taken that ball out of play, hence in taking gabby out he prevented a goal scoring oppertunity. If the shoe had been on the other foot I can honestly say my anger would be with our defender no one else. As for how the blues players reacted and have acted after the final whistle is another sign of there unprofesionalsim. Did you see villa players acting like that after our wembley debacles I dont think so. So to there fans the banner which was later taken down just goes to show there class of support. ... John Doyle - The amount of season tickets you have is completely irrelevant to whether you are right or wrong in your incessant ranting against MON. Based on every single one of your ridiculous posts, I am quite sure you will be peeved if we do make 4th as it will prove you utterly wrong in everything you say. That makes you less of a Villa man than Stephen Carr. You said that MON has “p+ssed money up the wall” – I gave you a number of reasons why he hasn`t. In my original post, I also neglected to remind you that he spent 12 million on Milner. What a waste of money he has been? Has he made some dud signings, of course he has, but that is the name of the game. Along with Ronaldo, Evra, Vidic and Rooney – Fergie signed Kleberson, Veron, Forlan and Bellion. It is the same with Wenger. He has signed Fabregas, Van Persie and Henry but also Francis Jeffers and Richard Wright. Are you going to slate them too? We have been to the Wembley twice, and are still in the mix for 4th against two sides that have spent way more than we have. How that makes MON a prat is beyond me. Despite all what I say, I thought we were truly awful in the second half yesterday, am concerned that MON won`t buy the type of player we need this summer, can`t keep the ball for long enough and that MON cant see Petrov fades every game after 60 minutes. There we go son, that is balanced for you - and the best bit is we only have 2 season tickets in my family..... |

... john doyle In defence of Ashley Young, I think that he is encouraged to pepper the box with crosses above anything else. Whether or not he's overrated is difficult to say. Given that he is our primary creative outlet, he receives the bulk of the opposition's attention, making it that much harder for him to impress. What I like about Ashley is that he has a tremendous work-ethic, two good feet, and is capable of going past players and delivering well. (I'm a little mystified as to why he his quality of crossing has appeared to have gone backwards in the past 18 months. Maybe we haven't been as effective at getting on to his crosses as in the past.) I think that given the right encouragement, he could be an even better player than he is, and for my money he is already our best player. I agree with you that Delfouneso has more potential than any young Villa player I can remember, and I include Gareth Barry in that, who as you say has been by some distance the best player we've had at this club for at least ten years. I would hope that Delfouneso sees far more playing time next season. I don't believe I've ever heard you mention Ciaran Clark before. Would it be worth him going out on loan to another Premiership club next season? |

... Simeon - what intelligent points did John Doyle make. Enlighten me? Does MON need to put a bit more faith in his bench and youngsters of course he does. We all know that. That is a far cry from him being a "prat" or "p+ssing money up the wall. Remind me, who has played and therefore transformed Gabby from promising youngster to the fringes of the WC squad. It was the "prat" wasn`t it. The same "prat" that will elevate the Fonz to stardom all in good time too. |

... IanTaylor987 You may not be aware, but I have taken a vow of non-negativity until the end of the season. This necessarily limits what I can say, although my views on most issues are already fairly well known. john doyle might well be using hyperbole to make his point, but this is no different to virtually every other poster on here. Gabby is, in my view, our most important player, and if I were making these decisions he would be going to South Africa along with Milner, Ashley Young and Luke Young. He has worked incredibly hard on his game and has improved season on season. He deserves a tremendous amount of credit for that. He also showed great initiative in making the decision to bulk up, which has improved him further. As I said, I would hope that Delfouneso sees alot more playing time next season. I wish I was saying that I expect him to. |

... Simeon - by defending an irrefutably pessimistic post by John Doyle you can`t really be serious about invokîng a vow of non-negativity ? In fact, forget just defending it, I believe you referred to it as "intelligent". Using hyperbole is absolutely fine as long as you can back it up with some vague reason and logic. MON has been called a "prat" and that he has "p+issed money up the wall" - niether you nor John Doyle would be able to put any arguments to support these two ludicrous comments. |
Simeon
said:

... IanTaylor987 That is your opinion. As I said, I am limited in what I can say between now and the end of the season. If you're looking for reasoned arguments, they have been made previously, you've probably already seen them, but haven't been persuaded by them. I would guess that your opinion hasn't changed between then and now. I can't see any logical reason why it would have. Naturally, I'm not going to leave a fellow poster to hang out to dry if I think they have a point. If that makes me 'negative' by association, so be it, but that doesn't mean that my vow of non-negativity isn't still intact. After all, I have made it very clear that I stand by what I have said prior to the vow. Standing by those comments also makes me 'negative' by association. In this sense I make you correct. But the vow of non-negativity was never intended to be an endorsement of anything that has happened, is happening, or will happen at Villa Park. I am simply not making 'negative' comments about anything connected with Villa for the time-being, out of respect for 4th place still being a (mathematical) possibility, and out of respect for a fellow poster. If you want to tangle, you will have to find someone else, or wait until the end of the season. In the meantime, my advice is to use all the resources at your disposal to get behind the team for the last two games. |

Joint fourth with the reckless spenders, and players who we can only dream of signing. It is testament to MON, that despite being our most successful manager for years, rearing players to world class level and having such negativity spat at him by so called supporters even considers carrying on. We have progressed year after year with MON. We are consistently top 6. Not an easy feat with wealthier clubs who can afford any player at any cost. |

... Simeon - you've just hit the proverbial nail on the head and touched upon why posts like John Doyle"s regular entries vex me so much. Our home form is the reason why we are in all likelihood going to miss out on 4th. Part of this is because of the way we play and the fact that we find it difficult to take the game to the opposition. However, another reason is the way that the crowd has got on the back of the team way too early in matches. The groans and negativity that comes from the crowd is obvious to everyone and is completely unwarranted. You can hear the stiffled murmuring of discontent every time before Carlos has even trapped the ball... Now herein lies the point as to why I felt the need to respond to John Doyle - do you honestly think that someone that holds his views gets behind the team 100% during the 90 minutes and just saves his ill founded venom for a blog? |

... If our football team Aston Vanilla win more football games than other football teams from other parts of the English country they finish higher in a league called the English Premiership League. The team that gets the most points over the whole season wins the league. Some other teams get to play in a final of a cup competition and if they win in the final they win a cup (just for a weekend). So I am hoping our football team plays well enough to earn more points than other football teams. We may not win the league but we will have points in the league and we can look at them and they will tell us how well we have done (it also says how many goals we have scored and goals we have let in sometimes called conceded). |

... john doyle - we finally agree mate and so i will shut up now. If MON wants to pay Beye, Sidwell, Reo Coker and Davies the best part of 200k a week then they have to be good enough to be genuinely part of the first team. At the moment he doesn"t seem to trust them or rate them which would make this particular part of his spending a waste. I still think that overall he has bought well and, Gary Cahill aside, has sold well too. |

... ian taylor987 just because i think mon is crap and not the right man to lead our great club to the next level. dose not mean that i do not support the team i never boo the players ever. even carlos when he gets the ball it is not his fault he cannot pass the ball 5 yards he is a center half and can head the ball and tackel that is what he dose is the same old story of square pegs in round holes every time he knocks the ball out up the wing or gives it away its mons fault because even you mr Talor know that martin f**ks up playing him full back when we have 3 better ones not playing that just another reaason i dont think martin is good enough they are basic schoolboy errors week in week out. if only he would have played a few diffrent faces this year like the fonz i know we would allready be forth or even third the diffrence between mon and odrery is odrey only played what we had at the time martin has twice as big a squad and wont use it but still has only finished 6th so far if we finish higher this year i will take my hat off to him but when you look back at the points drooped at home this year besause of negavity with subs well what do you think? |

...erm damien do u mean u are going to delete all my comment if u are im tryin but all my school friends text lyk this nd i kant stop so dnt know wat to do LOL 14 yo villan. Henceforth you may regard me as your headmaster. One who has the ability to improve your mind and the power to make you stay behind after school if you don’t make the effort. You are privileged to have permission to post comments on this blog but you need to be aware of something. It has standards. The reason we all come here is that there is no other blog worth going to. Thus you must treat it with respect. It is part of Villa culture so it deserves respect. Post comments in (fairly) grammatically correct English and spell words properly (or at least make the effort). You will get brownie points for trying even if you make mistakes. Overuse of redundant acronyms (e.g.: “lol”) is frowned upon – “ffs” can be used intermittently to denote anger or irritation and “sotc” and “bioyc” can be used more liberally if the mood is positive or aggressive. Many different opinions are expressed here and you must try to control your temper when idiots piss you off. Insufferable pedants are known to visit here and bore us all shitless. Just ignore them. Anyway, young fellow, enjoy your time here, respect your elders and keep your nose clean. If you have any 18/19 year old sisters in the family, I do private tuition on Tuesdays. |

...Surely, even Lionel will find the net on Saturday. It has gone full circle and surely Lionel must find the net before he goes of to SA, somehow this bloke manages to keep getting the call up's and in our team surely he can give us a goal. I must admit his impact in the last few games against HULL and the scum has been noted all. Open letter Dear Lionel, Lionel I used to be your biggest critic I even referred to you as EMULE and threatened to have it on my shirt. I am now aware of all the pre pre pre assists and nearly goals that you contribute to. Lionel please get me a goal before the end of the season and I will have Lionel on my shirt and your number as a sign of respect for you and your goal scoring ability. Please Lionel just this once. Thanks Chiefy P.S failure to deliver and its back to EMULE !!!! |

... If you look back to my earlier comment today and Fenian Villa's helpful reference to MON'S "overseas" article, all you youngsters will get an insight into the mind of a 58 yearold who has been in football all his life and currently earns £3mil a year.He is doing a real job in the real world and not playing Championship Manager on his computer. It is a good read |

... 14 year old Villan; have you ever been taught how and where to use punctuation? Those little marks help make your point as much as the words you use. I would make try to read your prose if I thought it was an attempt at a new literary style, such as Jack Kerouac's "stream of consciousness" as in On The Road, but I fear that is not the case. Ho Hum, and on we go. |

... Even if city get permission to get a new keeper regardless of how good he is , it has to be unsettling for their back 4 . I think plenty of crosses might just do the trick this time ,for once!. The fact that two villa players are on the team of the season and one of them is ex-city has to give that added impetus to villa for this game. I have a good feeling about this one , like how i felt prior to the utd game at old trafford. |

... this is the first time ive been on in ages and some of the comments have bewildered me about ashley young- im sorry but he has been aewsome in the last few games and we cant afford to sell him, and especially not to the yids the system we have got is working fine and i watched the match on SS1 and the commentator said we have lost 1 game in 16 and to me that really good and im sorry to say this but when we start losing regularly then start putting players up for the chop |

... The challenge for the penalty was reckless and the referee had no choice but to award the penalty. The birmingham players were an absolute disgrace. Did our players act that way in the cup final when blatent decisions went against us? No!!! they did not. Sebastian Larrson was acting like a wild animal after the game. He was swearing at the ref and calling him names within earshot. We have seen the same with Chelsea players in the champs Lge against Barcelona last yr when drogba behaved like a spoilt child throwing a tantrum. I WANT, I WANT, I WANT AND THE TOYS COME OUTA THE PRAM, f**kIN' ARROGANT ASSWIPES.... The FA need to do something about these arrogant players who think they can get away with this behaviour. Our players have behaved like real men should all season even in the face of some unexplainable decisions. Through all the shit, good and bad, they have behaved impeccably and we should feel very lucky to have them at our club. I want to congratulate James Milner for winning young player of the year. He deserves it, 100%. The whole team have been immense all season and even though i've had days where i've felt disillusioned with things, the players continuely raise my spirits. They have fought and fought all season long even when all looked lost in games and managed to pull something out of the fire. We should not forget these players for the effort they have put into this season. They are not used to playing so many games and yet we are still in the mix for 4th/ 5th places. We should be thankful for the players, for their willingness and never say die spirit. I AM THANKFUL FOR THE PLAYERS. BOO-f**kING-HOO I hear u say? |

We all knew what you meant. I recently reposted an entire article. The awful thing was, no-one noticed. I recently asked a 16 yo at a Grammar School if he was ever taught how to parse a sentence. He had no idea what I was talking about. "Adverbial Clauses?" - blank. "Subjunctive mood?", "Intransitive verbs?" - blank. Wtf do they teach our kids all day. The British Education System has them for at least ten years of their life, forty weeks of the year and they come out unable to read or write or rithmatic. The intricacies of the mobile phone? They've got doctorates in that little bleeder. Something that will prove useful in their disgusting, grubby, little lives? Perish the thought. Learn the sublime certainties of Double Entry Bookkeeping? They'd rather forge i/d cards and powder their noses with recreational drugs. IT WASN'T LIKE THIS IN OUR DAY. That's it. I'm off down the pub. |

... Stephen Ireland would be a great signing...I reckon a few clubs would be in for him so price would be quite high but I reckon worth it. I was thinking about SWP as well, he's a bit out of favour at Citeh and at his age they couldn't demand anything north of 10 Mill. Another fast option on the flank. We often complain about a lack of plan b and not sure albrighton is ready to carry the can yet. West Ham will be off loading along with Portsmouth and Hulll I should imagine...anyone there that takes your fancy? Bit early to talk about transfers in a world cup year but why not? |
