It's official, Aston Villa have the best central defensive partnership in the league

Afternoon all, nice post that from Doc earlier wasn't it. Now, leaving Arthurian legend, we turn to facts and we have a few of them today, which I think you will find quite interesting.

You see, I was putting together the post-mortem and I stumbled upon a few statistics which put a smile on my face and thought I'd share them with you. There is another coming up in the post-mortem which you will all like, but that will come probably tomorrow or I might do a two in one after the Sunderland game.

Now, the title was aimed at giving it away and I hope it has, but I am here to prove my case and my case is this; Richard Dunne, according to the Actim Index, is the fifth best defender in the league with a combined points tally of 211 - which also classes him as the 25th best player in the league.

But it isn't just about Dunne. Carlos Cueller, according to the Actim Index is the fourth best defender in the league with 215 points, which also makes him 22nd best player in the league. Above them you will find Thomas Vermaelen, Patrice Evra and Ashley Cole. You can see the list here.

But that isn't really where it ends. James Collins, who came back from injury as a substitute against Manchester United at the weekend is also on the list in 78th place overall with 158 points. Should he take back the central defensive role alongside Richard Dunner, I have a feeling he'll start climbing that list and should feature, in the not too distant future, alongside his partner.

Aston Villa Players in Actim Top 100

  • 5th: Gabby Agbonlahor - 254 points
  • 16th: Ashley Young - 228 points
  • 20th: James Milner - 220 points
  • 22nd: Carlos Cueller - 215 points
  • 25th: Richard Dunne - 211 points
  • 35th: Brad Friedel - 192 points
  • 78th: James Collins - 158 points
  • 79th: Moustapha Salifou - 150 points
  • 97th: Stephen Warnock - 147 points
  • 98th: John Carew - 146 points

Top 10 Keepers

  • 2nd: Brad Friedel

Top 10 Defenders

  • 4th: Carlos Cueller
  • 5th: Richard Dunne

Top 10 Midfielders

  • 4th: Ashley Young
  • 6th: James Milner
  • 24th: Moustapha Salifou

Top 10 Strikers

  • 4th: Gabby Agbonlahor

Now, compare these numbers with the ones from September 29th and there is a nice improvement all round. How long before Aston Villa have all eleven in the top 100?

What is particularly pleasing is that 4th & 5th best defender is actually misleading. They are infact the 2nd & 3rd best rated centre backs in the league behind only Vermaelen.

Best defensive partnership in the league even if we have one of them out because we have three of them!!! Way to go O'Neill!

Remember that Martin tried to get Vermaelen too when he was relatively unknown in the summer.

Our manager is f**king genius.

Carlos is wicked, but he couldn't get in the team ahead of Davies last season. Does this not say something in Davies favour when he comes back? I don't know why you dislike him so much. I'm startingt to think it's just because he enjoys a pointless interview.

Just goes to show that this really is a good team when they are motivated and used properly. Seeing the way they lined up on Saturday, it told me MON was going for the win, and that they would play positive football. Which was refreshing to see out of them. Maybe he has finally seen the light and will use that starting lineup all the time.

Could be a pain in the arse but it looks like cuellar will move out wide and l.young will go left-back with collins filling in. Perhaps Collins will start climbing the OPTA rankings on tuesday.

Fair enough, I think he is going ot be a massive player for us, I also think that the contract thing was blown up by the papers a little.
When he comes back I can see a lot of people having to eat their words about Curtis Davies. I also think he is at heart a nice guy, a bit dumb but altogether a nice enough bloke. He'll come good and I think he'll be at Villa for quite a while.

People say he's not prepared to sit on the bench, well if he plays well enough he won't have to. If you are playing well then you get in the team, that's how Martin works. He might have no choice but to play him.smilies/wink.gif

Remind me never to get on the wrong side of you Chiefysmilies/shocked.gif

Your mate the Mule had a good one at the weekend, I thought he was excellent first half and really gave us an out in the final third. Defenders really can't handle it when he come slumbering towards them throwing himself up in the air arse first trying to win headers! Awesome.

i'm putting my head on the block here and letting something out of the bag, although i'm not getting specific, but the contract thing with curtis was blown completely out of proportion - the story ran with very specific snippets to create a story

davies will be a star for villa and he is completely committed to the club ... although that is as of today - we all know things can change in football

All last season he was Mr. Aston Villa as far as the media were concerned, and beside Laursen he looked pretty good. If he gets back to that and a bit of Dunnes 'Irish Madness' rubs of on him he could be one of the best we've had. Many fail to see it, but I know you do Damian.

He has all the natural physical attributes to do very well, and at 24 he has the potential to go on and really turn himself into a legend.

Dunne will start thiunking about retiring at about 34/35. Cuellar will be 33ish and Collins will be 30/31. Davies will be 29 in the peak of his career with years experience playing with the others who are all excellent in subtley different ways. Clark will be 25 and a first teamer if he progresses well. The squad is geared up for not just this season, but the next ten seasons with a mixture of quality young and old. I don't see why anyone would want to get rid of Davies.

Things can change very quickly in football. A few good performances in the reserves and a suspension/injury to someone could very easily see him back in the side. We will need all hands to the pump if we are going to achieve this year.

Given the form he has shown whilst carrying an injury and playing alongside Zat Sh*tesmilies/wink.gif He actually had some pretty decent games fo rus and is unfairly being used as a scapegoat for our poor form at the beginning of the season. Had it been the other way round and Davies suddenly founf form and Cuellar was out injured the shoe would be on the other foot.

He should be judged when he is back playing, not while he is stuck on the sidelines. He was a massive part of the win at Anfield and he was decent during pre season not to mention our awesome run this time last year when he and Laursen were excellent.

JPA he played for 2 seasons(beside a great defender) when he wasn't injured and this is what im basing this on not a few games at the start of this season. We haven't been really solid at the back until this season and i personally put a lot of that down to Davies not being a good defender. I really would fear we would start leaking goals again if he were to get picked ahead of any of our current CB's. He just lacks agression, ability to read the game and is a really poor player with the ball at his feet. He was a major contributor to the long ball football.

If ind it hard to sympathise when you believe that Knight was the better of the two. That wasn't the case and with Laursen and Davies we usually won and with Knight in the side we often lost.

We are on course to concede roughly ten goals less than we usually do, but there have been other changes to the side that will have had an effect on this.

i.e the introduction of Friedel last season as opposed to calamity Carson or bloody Kiraly and his pyjama trousers.

The fact that we didn't have a recognised RB for a season and a half and also the fact that we were struggling to retain posession in midfield which often leaves the back four exposed.

Davies needs to be given a chance to play his way into this new look team as I think he will do really well. His shortcomings are things that can be eradicated. Dunne is more than capable of giving him an aggressive cutting edge as a player and reading the game is something that he is definitely learning. He is better player than when he signed for us, I just think he's a sensitive lad who thrives on confidence.

If he manages to get into the side he has the reward of a contract, the confidence gained from getting in ahead of someone else and he has a place in the England squad to play for if he starts performing.

We will have to remember this for when he is fit as I would very much enjoy rubbing your nose in it.smilies/wink.gifsmilies/grin.gif

Benni McCarthy available in Jan. Worth a shout? I think he could do a good job for us. He seems to be one of those players who trive on moving to a new club and playing well before perhaps falling into a rut. He would want to play well with the WC coming up. I like him as a player and if the price was right which it probably will he could be a useful player.

Bit like Graham Turner in the management game, every team he manages starts like the Brazil 1970 team then slowly turn rubbish, don't know why, maybe he's like one of those girlfriends that when you first meet seems really cool and sexy but when you get to know her more really annoy you and then you notice all her little faults and suddenly she seems ugly but she hasn't changed, you have!

It's simple really Dunne, Carlos and Collins are at the peak of their powers, Davies is still developing. When the above three are fit their is no question he is fourth choice, but with injuries and suspensions he is going to be required at some stage so lets hope his development speeds up under the tutelage of the three quality experienced center backs he has around him.
There is no point getting rid of him, squad depth is vital if we want to crack the top four.

Davies needs to stay with us if he can be convinced that he may have to wait to be a starter. Naturally, he'll get opportunities in training to make his case, although maybe not the cup games, given the numbers and perhaps importance of taking at least the League Cup seriously now.

Always injuries, suspensions, etc., to give an opportunity. But I think learning from the players we've got will do him a world of good if he's willing to be patient. He may want to be off for starting football. That would be a shame because, as others have said, he could be well poised to step in in a couple years' time as a much better player, giving us a consistency at the back that's invaluable.

Based on how Cuellar, Collins and Dunne have played, I honestly can't see him earning back a starting spot anytime soon, though. Cuellar is really finding his feet and defending brilliantly, and Collins and Dunne were instantly massive. Great problem to have.

I got so drunk on Saturday night that I do not recall the vast majority of the evening. All I know is that thanks to Gabby and thre rest of Martin's heroes, I now have several strange torso bruises and a chipped front tooth.

However, despite, the injuries today I marched into work a very proud man.

Compare that to this list of 2 and a half years ago, before Citeh got in on the act;

Nan, so that was you that fell over then. Ah, all is becoming clear.

It's a nice feeling being the "Lone Villan" in a pub full of ManU supporters when we win. To be fair to the Mancs, most of them came over to shake my hand, good sports. There were also a few pints in the stable for me!

You lucky, lucky people who got to go. Keep your tickets and programmes to show your grandchildren in years to come. "I was there the day we....." shortly followed by "ooooh granddad, do we have to hear that story again, I want to hear the one about Reo-Coker again."

it upsets the balace of the team completely and cuellar has very little go forward down the flank

worse still, warnock is out, so young goes left and cualler right
im pretty sure this will happen too

Just to put things into perspective for tomorrow night. Sunderland are unbeaten at home in 7 games including wins against Liverpool and Arsenal. It's not going to be easy.
I reckon Saturday's game against Stoke is the more important one. Anything from tomorrow's game is a bonus.

Shame, as I said he deserved another shot, but that's how it goes sometimes.

Absolutely no qualms about Cuellar going RB though.
His distribution isn't brill, I'd agree, but he can certainly defend.

If Warnock is out for a few games there are two realistic options....

Bring Beye in and sway Young to the other side. Beye was a little lax defending at start of season, but was good last time he played, and is very good getting forward (so provides balance with Luke on the other side).

The other option is to move Cuellar out wide. Although Cuellar isn't as comfortable on the ball and doesn't get forward this isnt the end of the world. We effectively end up playing 3 at the back with Dunne, Collins Cuellar. Young pushes forward into midfield, meaning that Young and Petrov provide the cover in front of that back 3, and also cover the flanks, so it looks like

Friedel
Cuellar, Dunne, Collins
Petrov Young
Milner
Young Downing
Gabby Heskey/Carew

Which would be 4132 defending and 3232 going forward...which I think would be very solid at the back and bloody exciting going forward. I'm sure Damien will try to argue its all a derivation of 451 smilies/wink.gif

I'm not a huge fan of Cuellar at right back. He seems a bit slow in that kind of space and is much more comfortable in the thick of it (in the centre). According to a few websites though, he's only out for tuesday and will be back for the weekend. Cuellar will probably only have to fill in for one game. Then try to win his place back from Collins...he could find that tough.

Cuellar has not had the plaudits he deserves so far this season, I am a big fan of his and every game he goes about his job and does it really well, next to Dunney Carlos has been immense and even the actim index puts him one place in front of Dunney, now how good Dunney is has never been and should never be in question as it has been seen for many years, but Carlos on the other hand has come into our team played out of position, and done a very good job so much so that we now use him as a back up there, and when played in his preferred position he has been immense. Now stats don't lie so on that basis Carlos has been quality and it would be unfair on him for us to assume that COLLINS will walk back in to the team, I think Carlos has been a great signing and I hope he gets called up to the spanish squad for the world cup he deserves it the way he is playing. I hope the media start seeing what hopefully everyone else can and obviously the stat people do.

In case you havent noticed i am a big fan of CUELLAR smilies/wink.gif

I agree with this 100%. He won't let us down if he did play RB but the team would lose vital balance. I would actually prefer Young to go LB and then play Beye at RB. I thought Beye had a very good game for us the last time he played and would like us to continue to play with 2 full backs even if one is on the wrong side.

Chiefy Cullar has been top notch. Thats the guy that got Rangers to the UEFA cup final all on his own a few seasons ago that we are seeing right now. He may now also be getting some recognition back home as well :

Chiefy,
Yes. and also because Beye has pace and is smaller with a lower centre of gravity and can turn. He would be better against players like Arshavin and Nasri, whereas with the physical presence of Kenwyne Jones and Bent and also the Giants at Stoke, i'd prefer just having a third CB on the pitch, which is what you effectively get with Cuellar in the side.

Cuellar won't leave, he wants to play in the world cup and a transfer into a team where he will have to adjust and settle in all over again may be too much of a set back. It's taken him 18 months to settle here and he is now in the form of his life.

He has more chance with Spain if he just knuckles down and gets on with it and carrys on playing like he has. I think he has a very good relationship with O'Neill and he's under contract anyway, slap a £20m price tag on him and the problem goes away.

JPA one day i would really love to be able to agree with you on something. smilies/cheesy.gif

I would do the exact opposite of that. I would opt (only if Young wasn't fit or covering LB) againest the top teams like Arsenal where we would be under the cosh for a lot of the game and where we would have far less of the ball and where having Cullar's extra defensive steel would be an advantage. Againest Sunderland and Stoke we would have far more of the ball and this would increase the importance of the RB being good in possession and pushing on and giving over laps and basically making it that we attack them from both sides.

Some day we will agree JPA. Some day.

I don't buy this, there is no way O'Neill is just going to let Real walk off with one of his most influential players in the middle of his most important season in charge so far.

Real wanted Young last season and they got 'short shrift' if I remember rightly.

Liverpool got mugged off over Barry and Redt**t got mugged off over Carew and Young.

We have to get over this small club mentality and believe in O'Neill. If he sells him then I belive in O'Neill enough to trust him.

I believe O'Neill would rather write Zlatan Ibrahimovic into his will as the sole benficiary than sell Carlos Cuellar, no matter what the offer. We've done so well putting this defence together it'd be stupid to start taking it apart already.

We are not a selling club anymore and Real can F**k off, We'll knock them out of the CL next year the F**ks.

I dont want him to go and no we arent a selling club but if he things the grass is greener and we can make 10million on him dont you think it would be worth it ?? especailly with DAVIES coming back ??

Keep him. He's too good to offload. We should be selling off the dregs, not our first team and I stand by this. It's not about money, it's about having the best team and Cuellar is playing too well to sell him at the moment. Lazy Journalism and MoN will never let him leave.
