I think ireland and bentley would be great buys, ireland would fit in perfect, but i would only bentley if barry goes. For me barry is 3 maybe 4 times the player he is, so fingers crossed barry signs a new deal and we continue what we started which was to build a squad around barry

I agree!!Steven Ireland will be staying put, even though city are set to splash out in the summer. He has been great for them this season.I think Bently could be a good buy but might be a gamble. He was brilliant for blackburn but since he has gone to spurs he has not be good at all.Saying that Harry dosn't really seem to give him a chance.UP THE VILLA!!!! - chris brown avfc

Bring back olly and let him finish his career where he belongs. Great instant replacement for Laursen and might help Curtis along a little? sell knight and make a big play for Hangeland which in turn will help keep competition fierce.
i agree that the Ireland talk is likely to be contract talk only....but he is out of contract quite soon and so more chance than Citeh signing Kaka... - RayK

its not that far fetched kiwi - if man city spend big this summer which is likely, a central midfielder is high on everyones shopping list so might become surplus to requirements as he isnt glamorous enough for the richest team in the world.

agreed machine - we have missed the boat on jaaskelainen, dont understand why we never got him last summer for free instead of paying 2.5million for friedel who is also 3 years older.

maybe we can buy 2 centre backs tho, and let knight go, we already need one to replace laursen so another one isnt too much too ask. - Michael

Why not start a rumour that Kaka is a Villa target? Ireland is looking for a pay rise and the chances of him moving to Villa are as likely as Kaka. Pointless horseshit. Not too mention he's a twat and could easily get the hump with MON. - Kiwivillan

Just re-read the HR quote... is he trying to get out of paying those loyalty bonuses by making DB hand in a transfer request? Or does he think DB is so daft that he needs to spell out how to put 2 and 2 together? - David Tyler

Interesting, mickey86... would be pretty happy with that.

Not going to replace both Davies and Cuellar though.

I'm not keen on taking Owen myself but it's a bit like Bentley - if the money's good, so be it (though in MO's case, in pay-per-play sense rather than the purchase fee).

We've missed the boat on Jaaskelainen too but always been a fan.

I see Bassong has lost his Red Card appeal... shame, would have been interesting to seem him play in person, given that he's generally regarded as their one success this season. - David Tyler

AVmark Bentley is a more right sided midfielder and ashley a winger, milner somewhere between the two. Bentley could be a similar player as to barry when he played left hand side.

I think the essence of martin oneils strategy is to play two attacking wingers with two big centre forwards and get it wide and get it in the box. Its a very effective approach, it can catch teams out on the break and the long ball from the back line is always an option as the centre forwards can challenge in the air with most centre backs.

But i think when you look at Man Utd and Liverpool and even Chelsea, there formation changes to meet the occasion. They have the personnel who have the work rate, abillity and disicpline to play different roles. Man utd dont have a formation, it changes from game to game and even during games the only thing that is set is that they have a back for. The game against arsenal they started with a stadnard back for then fletcher, carrick, ronaldo giggs, rooney tevez. They could be a 4-4-2, 4-3-3, 4-5-1 and i bet it was all of those things during the game. they have the creative freedom to express themselves but have the discpline and work rate to do the hard part! - mikey18

AVMark i would say at home to the likes of Wigan, Fulham and all the teams we should have beaten at Villa park this season you would get away with playing Bentley and Young together. I take your point though especially away from home but at least we would have options which is what a club in our position should have. I wouldn't pay anymore then 8m for him. - ak_27

RayK it's a fair point but maybe that's the reason we didn't pay over the odds for him. We know MON wants to play 4-4-2. We know we have been overun in midfield by the better teams even with Milner in who everyone agrees is a serious worker. Do we therefore think that we are so good that we will play 2 attacking wingers? No way. Even at Man U where they play 4-2-4 or (a proper) 4-3-3 this incorporates massive workers like Tevez and Rooney. Neither Young nor Bentley have the engines and ppwer of those two players.

So yeah, Bentley and Young together? No way, not in a 4-4-2. - Mark

VillaChris - cheers. I still think that's MON's stragest decision this season - ie that the combination of Heskey on the right wing and Milner as right full back was more effective (both offensively/defensively) than Milner on the RW and NRC or Gardner at RB..... - RayK
