Beating Spurs and this waste of time international break

So, that was a match worth waiting for but during it, I’m thinking that what I wrote in the match post about sloppy play, was going to cost us and it still bothers me a little even though I’ve created a reason to defend it below. And it didn’t cost us because Zion Suzuki kept us in it.

The sloppiness didn’t always lead to an opportunity for them though and the more I watch, I’m starting to think while it is sloppy, it’s maybe part of how we are approaching this season and that maybe we’re taking a numbers game approach to things.

You see, you’re always going to lose the ball and I think maybe we are happy to lose it as long as it’s in an area and at a pace that makes it easier for us to get it back quickly or make it difficult for the opposition to do something with it.

And maybe we’re taking this approach because the rewards can be high.

I’m not suggesting this is how we are actually approaching the season. I think we are trying to keep the ball and play short passes but we are also playing more long balls and with a keeper that could pass to the other keeper, we need to use that.

I just think we are not that bothered when we lose the ball because we are taking a disciplined approach, in such a way that when we do lose the ball, we have players around it to get it back.

It’s a risk and means we may concede more than we’d like but when things start to work for us, it should mean we are creating more chances and scoring more and we are using the matches, to get better at this approach.

But it’s still early in the season and a lot can happen and I’m coming up with excuses for winning. Wait for it! And that’s what Spurs fans should be hanging on to this morning, that it’s still early and that their manager is going to turn it all around.

But I stand by what I wrote in the match post and I wouldn’t be surprised if De Zerbi was sacked over the next few days or even at the end of October. And I know this isn’t a Spurs blog, but I need to write about this. The game has gone.

Spurs have Manchester United when proper football returns, followed by Coventry. If he loses both of those, he’s off. In the same breath, if they beat United, Carrick could go. It looks like new manager bounce is over for these two but if this was 1996 and not 2026, I think Carrick would get more time. But times are different and I don’t think there are many Spurs fans that think they’ll have the same manager in January and I suspect there are a lot that would like to see the change today.

And talking about different or actually broken or gone. What is up with this three week break? We’ve just had a World Cup and now we have to have a three week break for the Nations League.

I have to confess also, I don’t really know what this Nations League is and I’m sorry if I’m offending someone that loves it but I’m not even going to waste my time to look it up, I can take a guess and it’s not something I’m going to be interested in and that’s only really because I’m not really that interested in the World Cup if I’m honest.

I’m also going to guess that it’s only really about money and nobody asked supporters if they wanted this. It’s all about money these days and that’s what makes it so frustrating.
