Morning all, did you watch the England match last night? If you didn't, James Milner replaced Ashley Young in the second half, played on the left and in his little time on the pitch, I think he did enough to warrant much more interest.
The thing is, our Ashley was fairly anonymous and in the little time Milner had he made more successful crosses for England than he did for us the whole of last season. The other thing is, Milner was a direct replacement for Young, on the left. Is O'Neill missing a trick?
I want to talk about our Ashley though, as it was his first start for the England team and he just didn't look completely confident, certainly not the way Milner looked when he came on with a little over twenty minutes to go.
He would have learnt a lot and like all things, he will be more confident next time and Milner has played for the U21 side for years so he would have felt a lot more comfortable playing for England and he certainly made an impression picking up his first cap. He created the goal for Defoe that equalised things and there really could have been a couple more from his crosses.
Now, Milner came in for a lot of stick from me last season and I believe it was justified, his crossing was poor, but if it is a case of him playing on the left, which Newcastle had down as his actual position on their website when he played for them, to allow him to pop in quality cross after quality cross week in week out, I'd move him tomorrow.
I'd move him, as I'd prefer Young to sit in he hole anyway, I think a lot of us would. I want Young to play like he did in that match against Everton last season every single game, but it's going to take big decisions from Martin O'Neill, mostly changing from 442 to a variation of 451 and I'm not sure it will happen.

Aston Villa Rumours
I'm just going to summarise what I've read this morning, so we've got something posted but if I've missed anything please post it in the comments below.
First, is the rumour that Reo-Coker is interesting Fulham. This one isn't new new but it's new and gathering pace. IF we get in a player that is going to make it easier for us to play football, an attacking central midfielder shall we say, you could understand why Reo-Coker would like to leave. I think we have nine or ten midfielders at the moment so the lad has to wonder if he is ever going to get a game.
We are also interested in Erik Huseklepp. He played for Norway last night in the hammering of Scotland and apparently Chelsea and Newcastle are also interested. The appeal of Championship football in the North East isn't so appealing for the Brann midfielder so it looks like it is between us and Chelsea, if there is anything in this speculation. We need another central midfielder, so watch this space!

Also read about Warnock bid..had to Laugh at Big Sam getting all hot under the collar about bid..£4m is slightly lower Warnock may be worth, but £12m for someone you're not planning on being a regular member of your first team..Sam, you avin a Giraffe!!! |

... Agree Milner looked more threatening when he came on, but to be fair, the game seemed a lot more open in the final 20 mins. Also, until the last quarter, England played ball down the middle so much that the wide players didn't see much of the ball (SWP didn't do much, either). |

... andy lochead in the air do you think it fair though that ashley didn't look confident? i mean, when milner came on it looked as though he went looking for the ball? give ashley a game or tow more and he'll feel more confident and then england will see the real ashley young .. it certainly shows, having three aston villa players play last night, that you don't have to play for a top four side to get recognised barry had a very poor game too, which actually didn't surprise me. just an opinion |

... Ash didnt really get involved too much last night. Maybe he just doesnt suit the way England play. Ash needs to be the main outlet in attacks, he needs to be on the ball. Milner seemed to offer a pass alot more therfore was easier to find. Milly definately came onto the pitch with no fear, whereas Ash just looked a little hesitant. Heskey looked very sharp on the other hand, and thank god we got rid of Barry, what a crap back pass...lol |

... I felt the trio of Defoe, Cole and Milner all looked impressive when they came on. Also players were not given room to play in the first half, hence Ashley, Becks, Rooney and Heskey all fighting for possession. I thought Ash did ok since he was always double or triple marked when he received the ball. Still Milner did look exciting when he cam on and was the most attacking and creative midfielder. Also, its good to see Cole playing well. I know he did not light up Villa park but he has flourished under Zola and is beginning to reach the potential that was seen in him. Still I was hoping MoN would be there to chat to Van der Vaart or Sneijder as both looked ok. |

... Ash Young performance last night was totally down to nervousness.Every time he received the ball he looked to do the simple thing like play it square or back down the line . Not once did he take his man on . Playing for Villa and being the main man gives Ash a license to try anything on the pitch , but playing for England is a completely different story . James Milner for me has all the qualities to be a future England captain , he showes no fear , he gives 110% every time and looks like he cherishes every minute of being a pro footballer. ... I have a bee in my bonnet at the moment about positions, not necessarily formations. Mon is exactly the same age as I am and maybe his 'maturity'--I did not say old age---means we see things slightly differentally to many of my fellow bloggers on this excellent site. Namely Milner who was excellent last night can play in many positions i.e fullback, midfield [equally as well as Barry] as well as right and left wing. Gabby can be very effective playing as a right winger as well as centre forward. Both Boerma and Hebe play fullback and CB.Ashley can play in a number of forward positions and 'in the hole'Holland when they played total football in seventies and eighties had many flexible players who could switch depending on the opposition and the game situation.Reo,in my opinion is a very good 'standby' fullback if we are chasing a game.So let us see this as a growing strength of our squad rather than 'MON messing around with his players'Great to see £ Villa players playig for England I can never remember this happening before. It could be a very interesting World Cup for us,particularly if Downing gets in instead of Barry.Up the Villa |

Ash will find his groove he just needs to get his confidence up at International level. We could use a player like Tim Cahill....he netted twice again for Australia who pumped Ireland 3-0. Cahill knows how to come forward and slot home, but has the motor to track back....this is the sort of player you would hope Sidwell could become, however far away that seems at the moment |

... Ive said it a few times lately that with the emergence of Albrington, Milner should be put on the left with Young coming into the centre playing off a striker. Milner would be far better off coming in on his favoured right foot. More because of the great shot he possesses and on the right he would get a lot less oppertunities to get shots in on goal using his favoured foot. Ashly Young lacks the real skill and tricks to make him a top winger. But on the inside with his pace and good shooting ability he could become a very good striker/ attacking mid. |

Mon did say this week: We will have to replace them. That's my job. ... Damian i disagree, Milner came in for a lot of unfair stick last season. He's younger than Ashley and was at a new club and people expect him to slot in right away and be able to cross the ball as well as Young straight away. I think he was criticized heavily as he was viewed constantly in comparison to young and there was alot of stigma attached to his price tag. But at the end of the season despite his "poor" crossing he still managed to get 9 assists which places him 8th in the prem last season for assists with the van persie toping the charts with 11. I think Milner is more intelligent that Ash as a football, hence he could play in a more central role or off the striker. I would like to see milner used in the same capacity as ireland for mancity. Behind the strikers with license to roam. He can tackle and pass and has two great feet. I think ash should be moved across to the right where hoepfully he can kick on to a next level. with downing on the left. But these 3 players and positions are interchangeable which is an advantage to us. John Carew looked awesome for norway last night, bullied the scotland back four! Heskey looked good aswell for the time he hwas on. I'm worried gabby hasn't had much of a pre-season, but hopefully that means he won't burn out half way through this season. 2 CB's and a CM and i will be VERY excited for the new season |

Possibly believe their own hype too much and certainly in Youngs case yesterday, only feel they can release the ball once they've done something clever. Ash needs to start taking the knocks and realising that it isn't all about him and play a bit more for the team. If he doesn't i'm worried his development will stop short! |

Beye is decent cover for two positions with a wealth of experiance and was bought for peanuts, and Marshall is a third choice keeper who could easily do a job if both of the Brads got injured. Like most people on here I would love a big money big name signing, but if that player is going to cause upset and unrest within the rest of the team because of their stupid wage demands or hissy fits (Adebayor at Shitty ha ha) then I would rather say no thanks and give the kids a chance who will give 100000000000000% every game! He has undoubted talent but has made some bad decisions in the past. But we have all made bad decisions in the past. right? I am sure some would say, me included, that mon has made some mistakes. yet I love the guy, in a hetrosexual way of course. mon would not even contemplate signing him unless he thought he could keep him on the straight and narrow. Is this possible? Did mon sign bellamy? I also made a mistake myself when we signed Ash. I admit I said we dont want him and what a waste of money. I was proved wrong. Now, mon has told us he is going to change the way we play and we need certain players to do this. well IF we are after bently he must be part of mons master plan. So if mon wants him, I want him. I will forget my reservations and give bently a clean slate and look at him with an open mind and then one day I may just start liking the guy, maybe even idolise him one day. I would also add that if mon is after bently and has indeed been all summer, then I would wager that the fee will now be much less than quoted in june as harry wants rid. So to all the people who think mons transfer antics see us held to ransom. Just think again! I believe in what mon does to the extent that I vary rarely question anything he does. this is not blind faith as some point out but he deserves that respect until he gives me reason to doubt his knowledge and integrity. Aug 12, 2009 7:21:55 PM Photo GalleryZoomRafael Van der Vaart, Real Madrid-Numancia (Marca) Related LinksRafael van der Vaart has been linked with a new challenge after falling out of favor at Real Madrid following the club's star signings this summer. Inter and VfB Stuttgart are both understood to be keen on the 26-year-old, and, according to Wil Van Megen, an attorney for FIFPro, they could capture the Holland international for nothing. Van Megen cites the fact that Van der Vaart has lost his jersey number to Esteban Granero as the reason why Real will not be entitled to any sum for the player's services. "They have not given the player any number, which makes it seem like that they have not respected the contract they signed with him," Van Megen told Voetbal International. They couldn't deal with Tim Cahill dropping into the area between strikers and midfield. In fairness McGrath would have struggled last night if he had Gibson and Whelan playing in the CM in front of the defense. They are brutal. I put Dunne forward as he is a realistic signing. He is still miles better then Davies (which really isn't saying much) and im not going to judge him on one poor performance in a friendly. Don't comment unless you watched th entire 90mins. He was left totally exposed throughtout by a piss poor CM(which Mikey lead to him giving free kicks away). Unlike most on here i have seen him do what he can do and for £5m we could do a lot worse(Like Wheater,Cambell). |

... Alex, even today I would have Albrighton start on the right ahead of Milner. 20 minutes of decent football in a different position doesn't make me change my ming that Albrighton is a better crosser of the ball from the right. Why should it? churchill, yes you can disagree but answer this; baed on the 20 minutes from Milner last night, where would you prefer him to play, left or right and for this question assume Young plays the holding role and Albrighton can play on thje right? keefvilla, it wasn't just me. All you have to do is search the site. Milner came in for a lot of stick and when we ran the recent poll, most actually voted to have Albrighton start over Milner. ... Milner is a top player and has the best attitude out of anyone from our whole squad imo. It is unfortunate that he doesn't get as much credit as Young does but maybe it's because he's not flashy and showy like Young. As for people complaining about Milner's crossing last season, that arguement is just plain wrong! Look at the figures: Premier League 08/09 Top Number of Assists - Berbatov - 10 Van Persie - 10 Fabregas - 10 Gerrard - 10 Ireland - 10 Lampard - 10 Milner - 9 A Young - 9 Agbonlahor - 9 Malbranque - Modric - 9 So Milner not only had the same number of assists as Young did, he only had one less than the premier league players with the highest number of assists last season. To suggest he can't cross the ball from the right wing is crazy. Fair play to the lad for finally getting the headlines that a lot of us Villa fans know he deserves. |

... Firstly, Milner in general was terrible last year. This year may be different. To also suggest he could be a future england captain because he got an assist is funny as f**k. The problem with ashley is how light he is. If he had gone for that header that milner got to set up the 2nd goal, ashley would have been flung 20 odd feet into the air! He NEEDS to bulk up. |

You have to admit it's quite funny, I think. I'm sure everyone on here respects your opinion even if some of us think it's a bit misguided at times. That's why we keep reading your blog mate You're right though, the simple fact is that was probably the best I've seen him play and certainly some of his best crossing. Whatever, it bodes well. I'm not sure how many chances Young is going to get after that performance. Fortunately Mr Capello picks players on form so if Ash keeps plaing well, hopefully he'll be ok for SA. I'm going to hold my hands up here, as someone who thinks Heskey is generally useless. He played bloody well last night, imo. I'd like to have seen him with Defoe. |

... Well i'm not going to chance my opinions on Milner based on 20minutes at the end of a friendly - no matter how impressive he was. I agree with Damian - last season he put so many crosses into the first man it was infuriating. Having said that - he has a great engine, great workrate and by all accounts a great attitude. If he can add that bit of class/quality, which he showed he has last night, then he could be a great player (although possibly as a central midfielder). One thing people should note from the table is that Ashley and Milner - our wing wizards, our creative dynamos - were matched on the assist chart by Gabby - the player that it seems to me no-one thinks he can do anything but run fast!! I'll say it again - I would have him ahead of every Brittish striker bar Rooney. Its about time the local lad Villa fan was given proper backing - especially considering how Luke waste of space, talentless, bad attitude Moore was liked on these boards |

... I agree with eoin and chris, Gabby doesn't get enough support from the fans and is singled out as a one trick pony but isn't given the credit he deserves for the other work he does. When he played as the lone striker for part of last season he was awesome and very unselfish! Damian how many games have you seen albrighton play in? I'm not saying milner is a better crosser of the ball than albrighton because that is debatable, but milner is definatley a better player! He's all round contribution to the game and attitude is something albrighton can only hope to emulate. |

... I dont know about some of the comments on here but personally i thought Milner was great for us last year. Not only at tracking back but going forward aswell. I admit his crossing wasent all that but everything else about him was great. Not to mention in the u21 tournament where germany destroyed england in the final, Milner was by far one of the best players in that tournament and miles betetr than any other england player, and he proved his talents last night aswell. I can understand people complaining about Gabby becuase lets face it, he went missing badly last season from january and he doesnt have that much more than pace, but complaining aobut one of our most talented players like Milner is a bit suprising. |
ak_27
said:
|
... I do believe Mickey that Gabby is a one trick pony but that one trick ie his blazing pace can be a very effective trick. Its just we don't use it properly. Instead of having players with the ability to thread balls through for him to run onto goal and finish Gabby 8/10 times is left chasing 70 yards punts into the corners where once he wins the ball he is often in a tight situation where his lack of technical ability lets him down. He did lose his confidence in the second half of the season but hopefully that will be forgotten now. If Gabby played for a team like Arsenal he would bang in 20 plus goals easily. |

... mikey hands up. i'm basing, as well as more than half that voted in the poll i'm guessing, my views on albrighton purely from the peace cup but even so, milner was younger when he played for leeds in the top flight and all i'm aying is i've seen albrighton put in a higher percentage of successful crosses from the right in those few games than i saw milner do last season bottom line, milner did fantastic in his 20 minutes on the left last night which is great news but i'm not going to allow that to change my view, because it cant, that he struggles with crosses on the right i'm also not saying drop or dont play milner. I'm saying albrighton deserves a chance. He's not a kid anymore and if he gets his run and doesn't do the business, then that is another thing but milner got his run and while he didn't do badly, he did waste a large number of chances by simply putting in rubbish crosses. if we have a player than could put in 3 better crosses a game and we get an extra goal for every 6 (these are just numbers but you need a base) then we could maybe finish higher up the table or win more matches. All ifs but my point is milner struggles to get a high consistancy of his crosses in, from the right. It wasn't the case last night from the left |

I noticed that Milner popped up on the left quite a bit with him and Young switching positions constantly. I think MON is looking for a much more fluid midfield and I can't wait until Downing is fit. Imagine an attacking 3 of those, all switching positions, it'll be a nightmare for the opposition to track. Hopefully Delph and Petrov sitting behind. This excites me massively! More digs at Gabby I see! Lay off the guy, he does loads for the team and constanly chases long hoofs down the field and gets us going again. p.s Jesus, why do we have to have Heskey! |

... Doesn't look like any transfers will come in but you'd never know. As has been said on here before, MO'N keeps his cards close to his chest when it comes to transfers. I believe our squad is very strong because we have many players that can play in a few different positions. Not much dead wood left in the squad, only making up the numbers. Versitile players can keep the numbers needed in a squad down and in turn keep players happy; more likely to get games. Bouma (LB or CB), L Young (LB or RB), Beye (RB or CB), Milner (LM or RM or CM), A Young (LM or RM or No 10), Delph (CM or LM), Gabby (CF or RM). This is just my opinion but I |

Personally I think Lichaj is getting there but not ready just yet, I think more a lack of experience and confidence than ability. Three more players please, I would be perfectly content if they were Bentley, Jenas and Huth. Although can't really see the point of signing more midfielders. Ideally if Fulham want Reo then I want Hangeland and if Boro want Pubic Harewood then I want Wheater, Huth or Tuncay. Milner is class, always has been, always will be. Future England captain, possibly Villa captain very soon too. Anyone who thinks Carlos Cuellar is shit doesn't know anything about football. ... Need to offer Real M money for VDV now B4 everyone and the cats mother starts sniffing should he be allowed to move for free. Why hasn't MON denied Sneijder links like John Robertson was quick to do regarding Veloso. I'm no football agent but one of the first things I would have done if interested in a player would be to contact his agent with the question: 'Should we be able to put together the right financial package, would your client be interested in playing for us?' I can only assume that should Soren Lerby/Sneijder have been put this question then we were not rebuked as this Madrid speculation has been dragging on. MON would not have wasted further timeand the whole thing would have been easily quashed weeks ago. Contrary to posts today on this blog, Sneijder has not said directly that he is not interested in joining AVFC. He has said that he would like to stay and fight for his place at Real M, which is entirely different from a direct rebuke to us. Offering the right deal NOW could still secure either of the Dutchmen. They would have seen that Villa were more than well represented in the International last night and the quality we possess. We cannot afford to dither any longer. |

I don't quite see him in the same ilk as Downing but i do think of the squad of having to very good players that can play on the left and 2 very good players that can play on the right, 2 of the 4 can play on either! I just take issue with your comments on milner because i think the lad doesn't get the praise he deserves. His poor crosses are heavily criticized and his determination and the graft he puts in are well praised but what fans don't seem to realise is he actually has an end product 9 assists is impressive! I think we will see milner develop this season and its exciting! On the other hand Damian i was with you this time ish last season when we had a bid rebuffed for Bentley and i, like yourself, wanted bentley ahead of Milner! One year later it seems we got the better player wouldn't you agree? Although its undeniable that bentley is one of the best crossers of the ball in the world he still can't make it into an england squad and is behind Beckham, SWP, Lennon and Milner! |

Those who can't accept that someone comes in (and deserves) a little more money and has to go banging on the managers door or a group of players who embrace extra quality coming in and the opportunity to play alongside them. It is the former then MON has nott acqquired the players with the sort of attitude I think he has. |

Damian why do you think it is that he can seemingly cross from the left and not the right- is it because he has to check back onto his right foot and allow him a bit more time. From what I can see we haven't got a player who can consistently whip in good crosses on the run and I include Ashley Young in that. ... The burp, the thing I like about Milner is that he plays his football as if he was playing down the park. Rooney plays the same and it's great to see. He came on last night and was bloody good lets face it. I'm not sure who you're on about tbh, but I'm wondering if you've watched Albrighton? He can certainly whip a cross in while he's running. I made that very point during the Peace cup and I think that's Damian's reason for arguing for him (not that I agree he should start before Milner). Rob h and Keef, Don't, imo. Not everyone comes on here often enough to know you pair get on fine. |

... Some people are getting a bit carried away with Albrighton. In the youth and reserve teams he played well and looked good, but so did other players. I would certainly say that Delfouneso tended to stand out more in matches where I saw them both play. Because Albrighton did well in a couple of matches in the Peace cup some people are imagining that he's the second coming and suddenly better than Milner....he isn't....not yet anyway. He clearly has a lot of potential and we all hope that he continues to improve, but please let's not get too carried away and heap unrealistic pressure on him. |

For all that is said about how difficult it is to sign a player how quick did Fat trap sign Bassong after 3 of his CB's got injured. How quick did MoN sign Shorey when Bouma got injured? This recent comment about MoN not bankrupting villa is further proof, i feel, that he is unwilling to pay what he deems over the top. I just think maybe his valuations of players is what is holding us back. Although 12mil for warnock is stupid money! I think Fulham would snap our hands off if we bid 15mil for hangeeland. Same with West Ham and Upson. We need a CB of good quality so i think we may just have to bite the bullet! |
